What to expect

Nok Air is a Thai low-cost airline that started flying on 23 July 2004 and is based at Bangkok's Don Mueang International Airport. Nok means bird in Thai, and the airline paints a bird's beak on the nose of each aircraft, which makes its jets easy to spot on the apron.

Nok Air is mainly a domestic airline. Alongside the busy routes to Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, Hat Yai and Udon Thani, it flies to smaller towns that few other airlines serve, such as Mae Sot, Nan, Phitsanulok, Chumphon, Sakon Nakhon and Trang. It also links Chiang Mai with Udon Thani without going through Bangkok.

Abroad it keeps a short list of routes from Don Mueang, currently to Hyderabad in India and Nanjing in China.

Where did Nok Air come from?

Nok Air was set up in February 2004 as Sky Asia and flew its first service on 23 July 2004. Thai Airways International was a founding shareholder, and Patee Sarasin was chief executive from 2004 until 2017. The company became Nok Airlines in January 2006 and listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand on 18 January 2013. Thai Airways' share was diluted to 21.57% in 2017, when businessman Nuttapol Chulangkul became the largest shareholder, and has fallen further since.

The first international route, to Bangalore in India, opened on 31 May 2007 and was suspended in 2020. NokScoot, a long-haul joint venture with Singapore's Scoot announced in late 2013, closed in 2020 during the pandemic. Nok Air filed for business rehabilitation on 30 July 2020 and kept flying, and its shares were delisted from the Thai exchange on 9 January 2025.

Fleet and aircraft

The jet fleet is ten Boeing 737-800s with 189 seats each, and six Boeing 737 MAX 8s are on order. Besides Don Mueang, the airline has bases in Chiang Mai and Phuket. Its head office is on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road beside Don Mueang airport, and the ICAO code is NOK. With ten jets, Nok Air runs a much smaller operation than Thai AirAsia's 62 aircraft at the same airport, so smaller towns such as Nan or Mae Sot may not have a flight every day. Check the days of operation before building a trip around them.

Cheap tickets

How to find a cheaper Nok Air fare without giving up the bag or seat you need.

  1. 01

    Book small routes early

Routes to smaller towns have fewer flights, so seats around Thai holidays go quickly.

Mae Sot · Nan · Chumphon
  2. 02

    Check the airport

Nok Air uses Don Mueang, while most international arrivals land at Suvarnabhumi. Plan the transfer before booking.

  3. 03

    Compare fare types

A fare type with checked baggage can cost less than the cheapest fare plus a bag bought separately.

    Bags & changes
  4. 04

    Avoid peak seasons

Songkran in mid-April and New Year are the busiest times on Thai domestic routes.

    Songkran & New Year
  5. 05

Allow time for a Don Mueang transfer

Nok Air uses Don Mueang, not Suvarnabhumi. A same-day connection from an international arrival at Suvarnabhumi means a road transfer across Bangkok and a fresh check-in; allow at least four hours, or stay a night in the city first.
