Desert safari

Sealine Beach sits just beyond Mesaieed in south-east Qatar, roughly 40 km from central Doha, where desert dunes meet the Gulf. It is the starting point for 4x4 trips to Khor Al Adaid, the Inland Sea, and for quad biking and winter camping. Entry is free and open around the clock. Allow half a day, or a full day with a safari, and tell someone your route.
Sealine Beach is a free public beach on Qatar's south-east coast, just beyond the industrial town of Mesaieed and about 36 to 40 kilometres south of central Doha. It is where the coast meets the southern sand dunes, so it suits anyone after quad biking, a desert safari to the Inland Sea or a winter night of camping by the water.
The drive takes about 45 minutes: south past Al Wakrah to Mesaieed, then follow the signs to Sealine. The paved road ends close to the shore, and from there the desert begins. There is no public transport, so you need a car, a taxi or a tour.
The crescent dunes rising behind the sand are the main draw. They shift with the wind from season to season, so tracks that were firm one winter can be soft the next. Rental yards along the approach road hire out quad bikes and dune buggies for short rides in marked areas, and camel rides are offered too. Wear a helmet and stay inside the marked zones.
Desert safari operators gather their 4x4s here before heading south to Khor Al Adaid, the Inland Sea, a tidal inlet ringed by dunes on the border with Saudi Arabia. It lies about 35 kilometres away by dune track, which Visit Qatar puts at around 30 minutes' drive across the sand. The crossing needs a 4x4 and an experienced driver, and most visitors book a licensed tour. If you drive yourself, tell someone your route. The Singing Sand Dunes are about 20 kilometres away.
Khor Al Adaid is Qatar's largest nature reserve, designated in 2007, and Qatar has put it on UNESCO's Tentative List for World Heritage status. Dunes around the inlet rise to roughly 38 to 67 metres, and ospreys, dugongs and turtles live in and around the water. Nomads have long grazed camels in the area. Routes in run from Mesaieed through Sealine or via Mazrat Turaina.
The water is shallow and calm, good for swimming and fishing, and families come for picnics and winter camping. The public beach has almost no facilities beyond the rental stands, and no lifeguards unless signs say so, so bring water, food and shade, and supervise children closely.
Next to the public sand stands Sealine Beach, a Murwab Resort, with rooms, villas, water sports and its own beach facilities for visitors who want more comfort than the open shore.
