Stadium 974 is a football stadium in Ras Abu Aboud, Doha, built from shipping containers and modular steel for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and designed so it could be taken apart.
Built from shipping containers and modular steel for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Stadium 974 in Ras Abu Aboud, Doha, was designed to be taken apart. There are no public tours, and event tickets are sold separately. Thirty minutes is enough to see it from outside, longer if you attend an event.
Stadium 974 stands on the waterfront at Ras Abu Aboud, about 10 kilometres southeast of central Doha, facing the West Bay skyline across the water. It was designed by the Spanish firm Fenwick Iribarren Architects and opened on 30 November 2021.
The name refers to the 974 recycled shipping containers used in the build, a number that is also Qatar's international dialling code. The containers, together with a modular steel frame, made it the first stadium planned as a temporary venue in World Cup history. The site was once an industrial port area, and the container design reflects that past.
The stadium seated about 40,000 spectators and has no air conditioning, unlike most other World Cup venues in Qatar, relying on sea breezes and its open structure. It hosted matches during the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup and seven games at the 2022 World Cup, up to the round of 16.
The original plan was to dismantle the stadium after the tournament and reuse the parts elsewhere. As of late 2025 it was still standing on its original site and had hosted further events, including the 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup, the 2024 Trophee des Champions and the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup.
There is no regular public tour schedule. Visitors usually see it from outside or during events, which are ticketed separately. Ras Bu Abboud station on the Doha Metro Gold Line is close by.
The stadium returned to use for the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup, staging group matches such as Iraq against Bahrain on 3 December 2025, Sudan against Iraq on 6 December, Oman against the Comoros on 8 December and the UAE against Kuwait on 9 December. These games showed that the venue could still host international football three years after it was supposed to have gone.
Qatar had said the stadium would be fully dismantled after the 2022 World Cup and offered to countries in need of sports infrastructure. Uruguay was discussed as a possible destination in connection with a 2030 World Cup bid, but no move took place, and as of 2025 the stadium remained on its original site with no published decision about its long-term future.
For visitors, the easiest way to see Stadium 974 is from the water's edge at Ras Abu Aboud or from the West Bay and Corniche side, where the stacked, brightly coloured containers stand out against the skyline, especially at sunset. Event days are the only chance to go inside, and tickets for matches and concerts are sold through the organisers of each event.
The venue is close to Hamad International Airport, so aircraft often pass overhead on approach. Ras Bu Abboud station on the Gold Line of the Doha Metro is within walking distance, and Souq Waqif and the Museum of Islamic Art are a short taxi ride west.
