Sziget Festival guide
Sziget fills Óbuda Island in Budapest for about a week each August, with international headliners, dance tents, theatre and circus spread through the trees and a campsite for those staying all week. It began in 1993 as the student event Diáksziget. Official 2027 dates were not yet announced in October 2026, so confirm before booking travel.
Sziget takes over Óbuda Island, known in Hungarian as Hajógyári-sziget, a wooded island in the Danube in the north of Budapest. For about a week each August the island becomes a festival town, with main stages, dance tents, theatre, circus and art spread through the trees and a campsite where many visitors stay for the whole run.
The festival began in 1993 as a student event, Diáksziget, and grew into one of the largest music festivals in Europe. Its bills mix international pop, rock and electronic headliners with world music, jazz and Hungarian acts, and the daytime programme is as full as the evening one.
The crowd is unusually international, with a large share of visitors travelling from across Europe. Many combine the festival with time in the city itself, which is only a short train ride from the island's bridge.

A full week on Óbuda Island is a long stretch in August heat. A few habits help:
Tickets are exchanged for a wristband at the entrance, and the wristband gives re-entry for the days it covers.
Workshops, sport and smaller stages open; the campsite comes to life.
Theatre, circus and world-music stages fill as visitors arrive from the city.
International headliners play the main stage.
Electronic stages run into the early morning.
Decide early whether to camp on the island or stay in the city. Camping puts you on site all week; a city room gives you a proper bed and Budapest by day, with the HÉV to the bridge each afternoon.
Full-week passes suit those who want the whole festival, while one or two day tickets work well alongside a city break. With 2027 dates still unconfirmed, wait for the official announcement before booking flights.

Diáksziget opened in 1993, a few years after Hungary's change of system, as a modest gathering for students who could not afford to travel to festivals abroad. The island setting and the mix of music and other arts set it apart from the start.
Through the late 1990s and 2000s it drew a growing foreign audience and international headliners, and it now ranks among the biggest festivals in Europe. The format has stayed recognisable: a week-long island town with stages for every genre and a large campsite under the trees.
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport is south-east of the city; take the 100E bus or a taxi to the centre.
The H5 suburban line from Batthyány tér stops near the bridge to the island.
The island is reached across a footbridge from the Buda side; cars cannot drive onto the festival site.
Camping on the island keeps you inside the festival all week.
For a room, the Óbuda and Buda riverside areas are closest to the HÉV line, while the centre of Pest offers more choice with a longer trip each night.
Budapest in August is hot and mostly dry. The city averages a high of about 27°C and a low of about 16°C (1991-2020 normals).
Afternoons on the island can be very warm, and occasional thunderstorms roll through.

Timing & weather
Sziget is held in the second week of August. As of October 2026 the organisers had not published official 2027 dates, so treat any specific days you see as provisional.
General
No line-up has been announced. The first headliners are normally revealed in the months before the festival.
It is the Hungarian word for island. The festival has used Óbuda Island in the Danube since its first edition.
It began in 1993 as Diáksziget, the Student Island, a low-budget event for young Hungarians after the end of the communist era. It dropped the student label and grew into an international festival within a few years.
Yes. Camping is available inside the festival grounds, and many visitors stay there for the whole week. Upgraded camping options are also sold.
No. Alongside the stages there are theatre and circus tents, art installations, workshops and sports, so the island is busy from late morning.
Outside August the island is a park with sports grounds and a marina, and it hosts other events through the summer. Its name comes from the shipyard that once operated there.
Booking
Yes. Sziget sells single-day tickets as well as multi-day and full-week passes, so visitors staying in the city can pick one or two days.
Getting there
Óbuda Island lies a few kilometres north of the centre. The HÉV suburban railway reaches the island's bridge in roughly a quarter of an hour from Batthyány tér.
