In short

Teesta Barrage is a 615-metre irrigation barrage with 44 gates across the Teesta River at Doani-Dalia, on the Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari border, begun in 1979 to feed irrigation canals. Visitors come for the river views, and one to two hours is enough.

Teesta Barrage is a 615-metre irrigation barrage with 44 radial gates across the Teesta River at Doani, Hatibandha Upazila, Lalmonirhat District, northern Bangladesh, opposite Dalia in Nilphamari. Built between 1979 and 1998, it draws local visitors to its wide river views and suits travellers exploring the north.

Built between 1979 and 1998 for irrigation

Construction began in 1979 and was completed in 1997 to 1998. Government-funded work on the linked irrigation project started in 1984, according to the Nilphamari district portal. The barrage diverts river water into canals that supply farmland across the north of the country.

615 metres and 44 radial gates on the Teesta

The concrete barrage is about 615 metres long with 44 radial gates. The Teesta rises at Pauhunri in the eastern Himalayas and runs 414 kilometres, 305 of them in India and 109 in Bangladesh. India has its own Teesta barrage upstream at Gajoldoba in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal.

In the monsoon the Bangladesh Water Development Board opens the gates as the river rises, and flood warnings for the northern districts often quote the water level here.

Doani and Dalia

The site is known locally as Doani or Dalia after the settlements on each bank. The Nilphamari district portal lists the barrage and the Teesta canal among the district's sights.
