What to expect

TUI fly Deutschland (IATA X3) is a German leisure airline owned by TUI Group and headquartered at Hannover Airport in Langenhagen. From bases in Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hannover, Munich and Stuttgart it flies about 38 holiday destinations around the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, Egypt and Cape Verde. It suits German holidaymakers booking a TUI package or a seat-only ticket to the sun.

From Hapag-Lloyd to TUI

The airline traces its roots to Hapag-Lloyd Flug, founded in 1972, and began flying in its present form on 15 January 2007, when Hapag-Lloyd Flug merged with the low-cost Hapag-Lloyd Express under TUI Travel. The Leipzig/Halle and Bremen bases closed in the same year, and talks in January 2008 to merge with Eurowings and Germanwings came to nothing.

In March 2009 TUI Travel signed a partnership with Air Berlin, which took over TUIfly's German domestic routes from October 2009. In 2014 the yellow livery gave way to TUI blue, with the first repainted aircraft arriving in Hannover on 17 February 2014. Plans to merge with Air Berlin's leisure flying and Niki were announced in 2016, but the joint venture talks with Etihad ended in June 2017.

Bases and the shrinking map

The base network has changed often. TUI fly left Hamburg in early 2016, moved Zweibrücken flights to Saarbrücken in 2014, closed Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden in 2018 and opened Nuremberg in early 2019 after Germania collapsed. In December 2020, during the pandemic, it shrank from more than 30 aircraft to 17 and dropped several routes and bases. Plans announced in November 2019 for long-haul Boeing 787 flights were shelved.

Today the five bases are Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hannover, Munich and Stuttgart. Flights go to Spain and its islands, Greece, Portugal and Madeira, Cyprus, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Cape Verde, and Ljubljana is scheduled from 4 May 2027. There are no long-haul routes.

Scheduled flights and package holidays

TUI fly sells both ways. About 60 per cent of its seats are sold directly to travellers, about 30 per cent as part of TUI package holidays and about 10 per cent through other agencies. Anyone can book a seat-only ticket, which is useful for travellers with their own accommodation.

Schedules follow the seasons, with more flights to the Canary Islands and Egypt in winter and many Mediterranean routes added in summer. Oliver Lackmann is chief executive.

Before you book

A package holiday and a seat-only ticket come with different rules for transfers, changes and refunds, so read the conditions for the product you buy. If you are flying from a German airport that is not a TUI fly base, check whether another TUI airline or a partner flies your route, as the base list has changed several times since 2016.
