In short

Ubud Art Market, or Pasar Seni Ubud, sits on Jalan Raya Ubud directly opposite Puri Saren, the royal palace, in the centre of Ubud, Bali. Its stalls sell handicrafts, textiles, carvings and souvenirs, in a town long known for Balinese painting, carving and dance. Entry is free, and it is one of the busiest places in town to buy crafts.

Ubud Art Market, known locally as Pasar Seni Ubud, stands on Jalan Raya Ubud in the centre of Ubud, in the Gianyar Regency of Bali. It sits directly across the road from Puri Saren, the Ubud royal palace.

Ubud has long been known as a centre of Balinese painting, carving and dance, and the market is one of the busiest places in town for buying crafts. Stalls fill the market building and spill into the lanes around it.

Goods on sale include sarongs and other textiles, woven bags and baskets, jewellery, wooden carvings and masks, paintings and souvenirs. Quality and prices vary widely from stall to stall, so it is worth comparing before buying.

Entry is free. Published opening times vary between roughly early morning and early evening, and individual stalls keep their own hours. Bargaining is expected; agree on a price before paying. Morning visits are calmer and, according to local guides, a good time to bargain.

The market stands opposite Puri Saren Agung, the palace at the junction of Monkey Forest Road and Jalan Raya Ubud. It was the home of Tjokorda Gede Agung Sukawati, who lived from 1910 to 1978 and was the last ruling prince of Ubud, and in the 1930s it became one of the town's first places to host foreign guests. Dance performances and ceremonies are still held in its courtyard, so a visit to the market can be combined with a show across the road.

Ubud draws more than three million foreign tourists a year, and since 2018 it has had more tourist visitors than Denpasar. The wider Ubud District had 74,800 residents at the 2020 census, and the central village about 12,000.

For a broader look at Balinese art before shopping, the Puri Lukisan Museum, the Neka Art Museum, the Agung Rai Museum of Art and the Blanco Renaissance Museum are all in or near town. The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary at the bottom of Monkey Forest Road is home to about 750 long-tailed macaques. Metered taxis and ride-hailing pickups are not allowed in Ubud, so fares out of town are agreed with the local taxi cooperative before you set off.
