What to expect

Batik Air is an Indonesian full-service airline in the Lion Air Group, flying from Jakarta and Makassar to more than 40 destinations, about nine in ten of them inside Indonesia. It suits travellers who want a full-service seat, with food and entertainment, on Indonesian domestic routes.

Lion Air Group's full-service arm since 2013

Batik Air was set up in June 2012 as the full-service arm of the Lion Air Group and made its first flights on 3 May 2013, from Jakarta to Manado and Yogyakarta, with Boeing 737-900ERs leased from Lion Air. The head office is in Jakarta. Lion Air itself is a low-cost carrier, and Batik Air includes more services in the fare. In 2020 a Batik Air A330 flew Indonesians home from Wuhan at the start of the pandemic.

Jakarta and Makassar hubs

Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta and Makassar are the main hubs, with secondary hubs at Jakarta Halim Perdanakusuma, Denpasar in Bali and Surabaya. Batik Air runs more than 350 flights a day. International routes from Indonesia include Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Bangkok and Perth. Earlier routes to Chennai and Canberra have ended.

Batik Air Malaysia, formerly Malindo Air, took the Batik name on 27 April 2022 and uses Kuala Lumpur as a transfer point for international trips. Connections with Lion Air, Wings Air, Batik Air Malaysia and Thai Lion Air are sold within the group. Batik Air is not in a global alliance.

Soekarno-Hatta or Halim Perdanakusuma

Travel tip: Batik Air uses two airports in Jakarta, Soekarno-Hatta and Halim Perdanakusuma. Check which one your flight uses before heading out, as they are far apart and traffic in Jakarta can be heavy. Confirm your bag allowance in the booking too.
