What to expect

Indonesia AirAsia is the Indonesian member of the AirAsia group. It began life in 1999 as Awair, joined AirAsia as an associate in 2005 and took its current name on 1 December that year. Its head office is in Tangerang, beside Jakarta's Soekarno–Hatta Airport.

Indonesian law does not allow a foreign company to own the majority of a domestic airline, so AirAsia holds 49% and an Indonesian shareholder holds the rest. That is why it is a separate airline from AirAsia in Malaysia (AK) and Thai AirAsia (FD), even though all three sell tickets through the same website and app. Indonesia AirAsia flights carry the code QZ.

The airline has bases at Jakarta, Bali (Denpasar), Medan and Surabaya. Inside Indonesia it links them with Lombok, Labuan Bajo, Makassar, Balikpapan and a string of smaller cities. Abroad it flies to Malaysia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Vietnam, Perth and Thailand.

Two Thailand routes stand out. Bali to Phuket started in August 2024 and joins two beach destinations in one trip without a stop in Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta. Medan to Bangkok Don Mueang connects northern Sumatra with Bangkok's low-cost airport.

From Awair to Indonesia AirAsia

Awair, short for Air Wagon International, was set up in 1999 with Abdurrahman Wahid as a 40% shareholder; he gave up the stake after being elected president of Indonesia later that year. Awair began flying on 22 June 2000 with Airbus A300, A310 and A320 aircraft, stopped all flights in March 2002 and came back in January 2005 as an AirAsia associate. Fersindo Nusaperkasa holds the Indonesian 51% stake. The codes are QZ (IATA) and AWQ (ICAO), and the call sign Wagon Air still recalls the Awair name.

A long-haul sister airline, Indonesia AirAsia X, flew A330s from Bali from January 2015 and closed for good in 2022. Lombok became the fifth base on 2 May 2019. Indonesia's civil aviation authority places the airline in category 1, its top safety grade.

Cheap tickets

Small habits that keep an Indonesia AirAsia trip cheap and simple.

  1. 01

    Pay the Bali levy early

Pay the levy on the Love Bali website a few days before arrival and keep the QR voucher on your phone for the airport check.

    IDR 150,000
  2. 02

    Check the airline code

One app sells all AirAsia airlines. The code on the ticket tells you which company flies you and whose rules on changes and refunds apply.

    QZ, AK or FD
  3. 03

    Combine Bali and Phuket

The direct Bali–Phuket flight lets you pair Indonesia and Thailand in one holiday and fly home from either side.

    DPS–HKT
  4. 04

    Avoid Indonesian holiday peaks

The weeks around Eid, which Indonesians call Lebaran, and the Christmas to New Year break fill domestic flights fast. Book well ahead for those dates.

    Lebaran & year end
  5. 05

    Pay the Bali levy online

Foreign visitors to Bali pay a provincial tourism levy of IDR 150,000. Paying online through the official Love Bali site a few days before you fly saves a queue at Ngurah Rai Airport.
