Cai Rang at dawn, Ninh Kieu by night and the canals between
The Mekong Delta's biggest city, used as a base for the Cai Rang floating market and slow boat rides through canals and orchards. Visit between December and April, when the dry season keeps the boats comfortable. Two nights is enough for most people. Prices are low, and every nationality can apply for the e-Visa.
Can Tho is the largest city in the Mekong Delta, set on the south bank of the Hau River, the bigger of the Mekong's two main branches. It is about three hours by road from Ho Chi Minh City, and people come for one thing above all: the floating markets, where wholesalers sell pineapples and pumpkins off the decks of their boats at first light.
The city's front room is Ninh Kieu Park, a riverside promenade with a large statue of Ho Chi Minh. In the evening locals play badminton there and eat sweet bean che. The pier at its edge is where you hire boats, and the night market on Nguyen An Ninh and Chau Van Liem streets sells banh xeo, the crisp turmeric pancake of the south.
Cai Rang is the biggest of the floating markets. It is busiest around sunrise and largely packed up by mid-morning, so book the boat the night before. The better tours continue into narrow canals that large boats cannot reach, stopping at an orchard and a rice-paper village.
Back in town, Xuan Khanh Market sells whatever fruit is in season. Can Tho also has an oddity: a small museum of tarot cards in Ninh Kieu, with what looks like every deck ever printed. One full day and two nights is right for most visitors.

Getting there
Mien Tay coaches over the Can Tho Bridge
Take a coach from Ho Chi Minh City, 169 km to the north-east: buses leave the Western Bus Station every one to two hours, around the clock, and take about three hours. Can Tho also has an airport with domestic flights, and travellers from Cambodia usually come via Chau Doc. Coaches from the Western Bus Station (Ben Xe Mien Tay) cross the Hau River on the long cable-stayed Can Tho Bridge just before town. Phuong Trang and Thanh Buoi, the big operators, sell tickets at offices in central Saigon and run free shuttle minibuses from there to the terminal, which saves a slow taxi ride across the city. On arrival, the operators drop at their own depots or the city coach station, and most also run small shuttles into Ninh Kieu. Can Tho International Airport (VCA) lies in Binh Thuy, north-west of the centre along the river, with domestic flights from Hanoi, Phu Quoc and Con Dao; a taxi into town is the simple option. Coming from Cambodia, most travellers cross at Chau Doc and continue by bus, about three hours, and one direct coach a day runs from Phnom Penh.
- From Ho Chi Minh City
- Coaches every one to two hours, around the clock, from Mien Tay; about three hours
- Bus operators
- Phuong Trang and Thanh Buoi shuttle passengers from their city offices to the terminal
- Can Tho airport (VCA)
- Flights from Hanoi, Phu Quoc and Con Dao; taxi to Ninh Kieu
- From Cambodia
- Via Chau Doc, about three hours by bus, or the daily Phnom Penh coach
- Driving across from Cambodia in your own car or motorbike is close to impossible for tourists; plan on buses.
Where to stay
Ninh Kieu riverfront, Xuan Khanh or an orchard homestay
For a short stay, sleep in Ninh Kieu, close to the river. The 5:30am start for Cai Rang is far easier when the boat pier is a five-minute walk from your bed, and the night market and Hai Ba Trung restaurants are on the same stretch. Homestays out in the orchards give you birdsong and canal views instead, but every trip into town becomes a boat or taxi ride.
- Ninh Kieu riverfront
- Walk to the boat pier, night market and restaurants on Hai Ba Trung; karaoke and traffic noise into the evening
- Xuan Khanh
- Slightly back from the river, near the fruit market, quieter at night
- Orchard homestays
- Out along the canals for a rural night, reached by boat or taxi; mosquitoes and basic rooms
Getting around
Ninh Kieu pier sampans, Mai Linh cabs and flat bike lanes
Walk the compact centre, travel the river by boat from Ninh Kieu pier, and use metered Mai Linh or Happy Taxi cabs or Grab on land. From Ninh Kieu Park, the riverfront, the night market streets and Xuan Khanh Market all fit into an hour on foot, with the lit pedestrian bridge a few minutes away. Boats leave from Ninh Kieu pier: the ticket booth sells set trips to Cai Rang, while freelance boatmen along the bank offer small sampans that can slip into narrow canals, at a price you negotiate before boarding. For land trips, Mai Linh and Happy Taxi run metered cabs, and ride-hailing apps such as Grab cover the city too. The delta is pancake-flat, so a rented bicycle or motorbike is a pleasant way to reach orchards and the old Binh Thuy house, though the centre jams at rush hour even for motorbikes.
- Ninh Kieu pier
- Boat hire and the ticket booth for floating market trips
- Taxis
- Mai Linh and Happy Taxi, both metered
- Bicycle or motorbike
- Flat roads, good for orchards outside town
- Ferries
- Local boats from the riverfront to villages across the water
- Confirm in plain terms which markets and canals are included, and the return time, before you hand over money for a boat.
Know before you go
What makes Cần Thơ worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- Cai Rang at sunrise, with fruit hanging from bamboo poles to show what each boat sells.
- Small-boat canal trips, through channels too narrow for the tour boats.
- Ninh Kieu Park in the evening, when families eat che and play badminton by the river.
- Banh xeo at the night market, crisp rice-flour pancakes wrapped in mustard leaves and herbs.
- The Museum of Tarot, an unexpected private collection of decks in a quiet Ninh Kieu street.
Good to know
- Agree the route first: confirm that the canal stretch is included before you board, since some boatmen charge extra later.
- Mosquitoes are fierce at dusk; bring repellent and check your room has a net or screens.
- Do not swim in the river, which carries parasites.
- Step carefully getting on and off boats; decks are low and often wet.

Weather in Cần Thơ, month by month
Cần Thơ reaches 34°C in April, and September brings about 451 mm of rain. January is the coolest month, at 30°C by day.

Sunset at Ninh Kieu, sunrise at Cai Rang
Two days in Can Tho revolve around one early boat. Arrive from Saigon by early afternoon, book the next morning's trip at Ninh Kieu pier while the boatmen are idle, then leave at 5:30am for Cai Rang floating market, which is busiest just after sunrise. Afternoons are for resting and old houses.
Drop your bags in Ninh Kieu, sleep off the drive, then walk the riverfront in the late afternoon past the Ho Chi Minh statue to the pier. Compare offers for tomorrow's boat. Cross the pedestrian bridge as its lights come on, then eat banh xeo at the night market on Nguyen An Ninh.
The next day starts at 5:30am. The boat to Cai Rang takes about half an hour down the Can Tho River, and the market is at its liveliest just after sunrise, when wholesale boats hang samples of pineapples, pumpkins or sweet potatoes from tall poles to advertise what they carry. Breakfast is a bowl of noodle soup bought from a boat alongside. A good tour then turns into the small canals, stopping at a fruit orchard and a workshop where rice paper is spread to dry on bamboo racks, and gets back by early afternoon.
Rest through the heat. In the late afternoon, take a taxi to the Binh Thuy ancient house, a French-influenced family mansion with tiled floors and carved wood, or visit Ong Pagoda on Hai Ba Trung, a Chinese assembly hall full of incense. On the last morning, buy fruit at Xuan Khanh Market before the coach back.
Banh Xeo, Lau Mam and Mekong fruit
Start with banh xeo, the crackling turmeric pancake sold at the Nguyen An Ninh night market, then share a lau mam hotpot and buy whatever fruit Xuan Khanh Market has in season. Delta cooking leans sweet and herb-heavy, built on the fish, greens and fruit that grow around the city.
Banh xeo is a thin, crackling pancake of rice flour and turmeric folded around shrimp, pork and bean sprouts. You tear it with your fingers, wrap it in mustard greens and herbs and dip it in fish sauce. The night market on Nguyen An Ninh and Chau Van Liem streets has several stalls, and the covered market area on Phan Boi Chau sells it hot in the evenings.
For a group meal, order lau mam, a dark, pungent hotpot based on fermented fish, loaded with river fish, eggplant and a pile of local greens and water flowers. It tastes far better than it smells. Nem nuong, grilled pork sausage rolled in rice paper with herbs, is another local favourite, and the restaurants along Hai Ba Trung serve river fish, snakehead and elephant ear fish fried whole.
Fruit is the other reason to be hungry. Xuan Khanh Market and the floating market boats sell whatever is in season, from mangoes and pineapples to the small, tangy bon bon. Sugarcane juice pressed on the street, iced coffee with condensed milk and young coconut are the drinks of the riverfront.
High water, orchard fruit and the Ok Om Bok boat races
December to April is the easiest time for Can Tho: the city is dry, highs run 30C to 34C and February sees almost no rain. The wet season from May to November brings afternoon showers but good river mornings, and from about September the Mekong runs high and floods the fields around the city.
Dry-season lows sit around 22C to 25C, and February averages only about 4mm of rain. These are the easiest months for early boat trips and dry paths through the orchards. March and April are the hottest, so plan to be off the water by late morning.
Rain returns in May, with about 220mm, and builds to a peak of around 450mm in September. Showers mostly fall in the afternoon, and the mornings on the river are still good. Locals call the high-water months nuoc noi, when fishing and the river landscape change. Boats run all year, but bring a rain jacket.
Fruit follows the rains. Orchards around the city are heaviest with rambutan, durian and mangosteen from roughly May to August, which makes the wet season a good time for orchard visits. Tet, in late January or February, fills the floating markets with boats piled with flowers and fruit in the days beforehand. Since 2025, the enlarged city includes Soc Trang, where the Khmer community holds the Ok Om Bok festival around the tenth lunar month, with long-boat races on the river.
