Hòa Bình travel guide
Da River dam, Muong country and the road to Mai Chau
A town on the Da River about 76 km from Hanoi, beside the huge Hoa Binh Dam and its island-studded reservoir. Come from September to November or March to May. A day on the lake is enough before carrying on to Mai Chau. Costs are low, and the e-Visa is open to all passports.
Hoa Binh sits on the Da River about 76 km southwest of Hanoi, where the flat delta gives way to the mountains of the northwest. This is Muong country, and the town is the first real stop for travellers heading west along Highway 6 towards Mai Chau.
Its landmark is Hoa Binh Dam, built with Soviet money and engineers and the largest hydroelectric plant in Southeast Asia until Son La Dam was finished in 2012. Behind it, the reservoir winds for many kilometres between steep hills. Boats head out to Muong and Dao villages on the shore and to Thung Nai, a broad stretch of water dotted with limestone islands.
History here is military as well. French troops and the Viet Minh fought over the town in the winter of 1951 to 1952. Today most visitors are on their way to the rice valley and stilt-house homestays of Mai Chau, further west. Stop for the dam and a lake trip, then move on.

Getting there
Yen Nghia coaches and the climb onto Highway 6
Hòa Bình has no railway or airport, so the 76 km from Hanoi are covered by road, usually in about two hours, depending on how quickly you clear the capital. Two routes compete for the trip, and both deliver you to the Da River just below the dam. There are two routes: the newer one heads out along Thang Long Avenue to Hoa Lac and takes the expressway spur over the hills, while the old Highway 6 runs through Xuan Mai and is slower but passes plenty of roadside food. Buses leave from Yen Nghia bus station on Hanoi's south-western edge and from My Dinh, and many services bound for Mai Chau and the northwest stop in Hoa Binh on the way. Fly into Hanoi Noi Bai, then allow extra time to cross the city.
- Bus from Hanoi
- From Yen Nghia or My Dinh stations, about two hours
- Car with driver
- The flexible option if you want the dam and a lake trip in one day
- Through buses
- Mai Chau and northwest services pass through town
- Nearest airport
- Hanoi Noi Bai (HAN), on the far side of the capital
- Tell the bus driver whether you want the town or the boat piers on the reservoir; some will drop you near the turn-off.
Getting around
Boat piers above the dam and cabs along the Da
Hòa Bình town lies on both banks of the Da River just below the dam, and its centre is walkable, but everything you come for is outside it. Taxis and xe om are easy to find and cover the short run up to the dam viewpoint and on to the boat piers on the reservoir above it. From the piers, boats go out across the lake to Thung Nai, Thac Bo temple and villages on the shore; you can share a boat with other visitors at weekends or charter one for your group, and the price depends on the route and hours, so agree both before casting off. For Kim Boi hot springs or the road west to Mai Chau, a car is easiest.
- Taxi or xe om
- From town to the dam viewpoint and the reservoir piers
- Boat
- Shared or chartered from the piers to Thung Nai and Thac Bo temple
- Car
- Best for Kim Boi hot springs and the road to Mai Chau
- Bring a hat, sun cream and water on the lake; most boats have only a thin canopy.
Know before you go
What makes Hòa Bình worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- A boat across the reservoir to Thung Nai, with limestone hills on every side.
- The view over Hoa Binh Dam and the Da River squeezed between hills below it.
- Thac Bo temple on the lakeshore, a common stop on boat trips.
Good to know
- Hoa Binh is a waypoint; spend the night in Mai Chau instead if you want homestays among rice fields.
- Lake boats depend on the weather, and summer storms can cancel trips.

Dam viewpoint at nine, Thung Nai's limestone islands by noon
Hòa Bình works as a long day from Hanoi: leave by seven and you arrive about nine. Go first to the viewpoint above Hoa Binh Dam, a wall of rock and concrete holding back the Da River, built with Soviet money and engineers and the region's largest until Son La Dam opened upstream in 2012.
From there, take a taxi to the boat piers on the reservoir and head out for Thung Nai. The ride follows the lake between steep, forested ridges until the water opens into a wide basin scattered with limestone islands. Stop at Thac Bo temple, dedicated to the Lady of the Bo rapids; spring is festival season and the steps get crowded. Then eat lunch on one of the floating restaurants, where fish come straight out of the lake.
Many boats call at a Muong or Dao village on the shore on the way back. If time allows, look into the private museum of Muong culture in town, which gathers stilt houses, gongs and household objects from across the province. By late afternoon, either push on west to Mai Chau for a homestay or turn back to Hanoi.
Cơm lam, lake fish and rượu cần in Muong country
Hòa Bình's Muong cooking is plain, smoky and built on what grows in the hills. First you will see cơm lam, sticky rice packed into bamboo and roasted over embers until the tube leaves a thin skin on the rice; peel it and eat it with sesame salt or grilled meat, hot from stalls on Highway 6.
Pork from lợn bản, the small black hill pigs raised in villages, is grilled, boiled or smoked and has a firm texture and real flavour compared with lowland pork. Bitter bamboo shoots, măng đắng, are boiled and dipped in a sauce of sesame and chilli, an acquired taste the Muong are proud of. On the reservoir, the floating restaurants at Thung Nai grill or steam fish from the lake and serve them with herbs and rice.
Drinking has its own ritual. Rượu cần is rice wine fermented with herbs in a clay jar and drunk communally through long bamboo straws pushed into the jar; hosts top it up with water as the level falls. If you are invited to share one at a homestay or village, take the straw, drink when your turn comes and pace yourself, because rounds tend to continue.
