Family Christmas in the USA is at its best at Rockefeller Center in New York City, the Christkindlmarket in Chicago, Gaylord Opryland in Nashville and Canyon Road in Santa Fe, places where the season is built around children as much as adults: a lit tree in a city square, a market selling hot pretzels and handmade ornaments, a small town where the whole main street turns out for a parade. This guide picks 25 of them, from the giant Norway spruce at Rockefeller Center to a Hawaiian civic centre strung with lights, and gives each one the 2026 dates, the area, what it costs, how to get there and the catch that brochures skip.

Planning the bigger trip first? Our United States travel guide covers entry, regions and getting around, and our guide to winter vacations in the USA helps you choose between snow and sunshine. If you plan to stay on for the countdown, the New Year's Eve in the USA guide picks up where this one stops.
How we chose these 25 places: Every pick had to work for a family with children of mixed ages, run every year with a fixed home, and publish its 2026 season dates. We checked those dates against organisers' announcements and local news in October 2026. Where an organiser had not yet released times or prices, we give the season window only, so you can plan the trip and confirm the detail a few weeks before you travel.
A few numbers frame the season: the Rockefeller tree is lit on December 2, Natchitoches holds its 100th festival, and Silver Dollar City strings up about 6.5 million lights.
How Americans celebrate Christmas, and what that means for a family trip
Christmas in the USA lasts more than a month. It starts the day after Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday of November, which falls on November 26 in 2026) and runs to New Year, with the public holiday on December 25. Most of the big events on this list switch on in the second half of November and close in the first week of January.
That timing shapes a family trip. Lights, markets and parades fill the weekends from late November to about December 20, and those weekends are when crowds peak. Christmas Day is quiet: most shops, many restaurants and some attractions close, while theme parks stay open and are packed. The week between Christmas and New Year brings school holidays across the country, the highest hotel prices and the longest queues. Families who can travel in the first two weeks of December see almost everything for less money and with shorter waits.
Traditions differ by region, which is why a family Christmas here can look so different from one state to the next. New England towns lean on church suppers, carols and village greens. The South mixes fireworks, riverboats and German-style markets brought by 19th-century settlers. The Southwest has farolitos and Mexican food, and Hawaii puts Santa in an aloha shirt. Picking a place is really picking which of these Christmases your children will remember.
Top 25 places to celebrate Christmas in the USA with the family, full guide
Rockefeller Center, New York City
Our editor's pick among the big-city sights, and free to view, the Rockefeller Center tree is the one most American children know from television, and seeing it in person still lands. The 2026 tree arrives on November 7 and is lit on Wednesday, December 2, during the live "Christmas in Rockefeller Center" broadcast, then stays up until January 9, 2027. The rink below the tree, the toy-filled shops on the plaza and the decorated department store windows along Fifth Avenue fill an easy afternoon.
The honest caveat: the lighting night itself is a crush of people behind barriers, and small children see very little. Families do better on a weekday morning in the first half of December, when the crowds are thinner and the walk from the tree to the Fifth Avenue windows takes a few minutes. If you are staying in the city through December 31, read our New Year in New York City guide before booking a hotel near Times Square.
- Area: Midtown Manhattan, between 48th and 51st Streets
- 2026 season: Lit December 2, on view until January 9, 2027
- Cost: Free to view; skating is ticketed
- Getting there: Subway to 47th–50th Sts–Rockefeller Center
First-timers and kids who know the tree from TV get the biggest thrill. Go before 9am on a weekday for photos without a wall of phones.
Dyker Heights, Brooklyn
For the best free lights in New York, head to Dyker Heights, a residential corner of south Brooklyn best seen on foot, where homeowners compete, house by house, with displays that run to life-size nutcrackers, animated reindeer and walls of white light. Nothing is ticketed and nothing is organised: you simply walk the blocks around 83rd to 86th Streets between 11th and 13th Avenues and look.
For children this is often the highlight of a New York Christmas, because the scale is so personal. Peak viewing runs from mid-December into the first week of January. Arrive around dusk and plan to leave by about 9pm, when many displays switch off. Weekdays are far calmer than weekends, when tour buses fill the narrow streets. These are private homes, so keep voices down, stay off lawns and use the restrooms before you leave Manhattan, because there are almost none in the area.
- Area: Dyker Heights, south Brooklyn
- Best time: Mid-December to early January, dusk to 9pm
- Cost: Free; guided bus tours are optional
- Getting there: D train to 79th St, then a 15-minute walk
Families on a budget will love it. Bring a thermos, because cafés near the main blocks are few.
National Christmas Tree, Washington, D.C.
The most historic tree on this list, and free, the National Christmas Tree stands in the capital on the Ellipse in President's Park, south of the White House. It is ringed by 58 smaller trees decorated for each state, territory and the District of Columbia. Children enjoy hunting for their own state's tree, or for the one of a state they visited, and the model train that circles the base has been a fixture for years.
Tickets for the lighting ceremony are free but allocated by a lottery on Recreation.gov, which for 2026 opened on October 28 and closed on November 4. If you missed it, skip the ceremony. The tree and the state trees are open to everyone in the days and weeks after the lighting, and a quiet evening visit, followed by a walk to the Washington Monument, is more relaxing for small children anyway. Security screening applies near the White House, so leave large bags at the hotel.
- Area: The Ellipse, President's Park
- 2026 season: Early December lighting, open daily afterwards
- Cost: Free; ceremony seats by lottery
- Getting there: Metro to Federal Triangle or McPherson Square
School-age children who like a bit of history get the most from it, and the free Smithsonian museums on the Mall are close by.
Christkindlmarket, Chicago
Our pick for the best market, Chicago's German-style Christkindlmarket fills Daley Plaza in the Loop with wooden huts selling glass ornaments, nutcrackers, bratwurst, potato pancakes and warm spiced drinks served in a collectable boot-shaped mug. It runs from November 20 to December 24, 2026, and entry is free. Opening hours are 11am to 8pm Sunday to Thursday and 11am to 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays, with shorter hours on Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.
For families the trick is timing. Weekday lunchtimes are busy with office workers, and Saturday evenings are packed shoulder to shoulder, which is hard with a stroller. Mid-afternoon on a weekday is the sweet spot. Children's drinks such as hot chocolate are sold alongside the adult ones, and the Picasso sculpture on the plaza gives older kids something to climb near (not on). Chicago in December is properly cold and windy, so hats and gloves are essential.
- Area: Daley Plaza, the Loop
- 2026 dates: November 20 to December 24
- Cost: Free entry; food and gifts extra
- Getting there: CTA Blue Line to Washington
Food-loving, gift-shopping families will be happiest here. The boot mug is part of the price, so keep it as a souvenir.
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Christmas City USA is what this small Pennsylvania city calls itself, a name that goes back to the Moravian settlers who named the town on Christmas Eve in the 1700s. Today the main draw for families is the market, Christkindlmarkt Bethlehem, held in heated tents at PNC Plaza beside the old Bethlehem Steel blast furnaces. In 2026 it runs on weekend blocks from November 13 to December 20, so check which days fall on your visit before you drive in.
The setting is unusual and children notice it: rusting steel towers lit in colour above a traditional craft market. Inside the tents you will find glassblowers and woodworkers at work, which holds a child's attention longer than another row of stalls. Spend the second half of the day in the historic district on the north side of the river, where Moravian stars hang in windows and the 18th-century stone buildings look their best after dark. Weekend parking near the market fills early.
- Area: PNC Plaza at SteelStacks, south Bethlehem
- 2026 dates: Weekends, November 13 to December 20
- Cost: Admission varies by day; check before you go
- Getting there: About 90 minutes by car from Philadelphia or New York
Crafty kids and grandparents enjoy it together. The town's signature ornament is the Moravian star, so take one home.
Kennebunkport, Maine
Our best coastal town in New England, Kennebunkport turns its Christmas Prelude festival into ten days of village celebration in a fishing and summer-resort town on the southern Maine coast. The 45th Prelude runs from December 3 to 13, 2026. Highlights for children include the Hat Parade on Saturday, December 5, from 3pm to 4:30pm, and the tree lighting in Dock Square with fireworks on the second weekend.
This is where you come for a Christmas that feels like a card: lobster traps stacked into trees, shop windows glowing on Dock Square, church suppers and carollers. It is also a small place, and on Friday, December 11, roads from Cooper's Corner to Dock Square close to traffic from 3:30pm to 7pm, so park early and walk. Hotels and inns in town book out months ahead for Prelude weekends. Families with a car often stay in Portland, about 40 minutes north, and drive down for the day.
- Area: Dock Square, Kennebunkport
- 2026 dates: December 3 to 13
- Cost: Most events free
- Getting there: About 2 hours by car from Boston
Come here for a small-town Christmas by the sea, and wear something festive on your head for the Hat Parade.
Boston Common, Massachusetts
Every year Nova Scotia sends Boston a tall evergreen as thanks for the help the city gave after the Halifax Explosion of 1917, and the tree is lit free on Boston Common, the city park, in early December. It is our pick for the best tradition. The 2025 lighting, the 84th, was a 45-foot white spruce from Lunenburg County. The city announces each year's date in the autumn, so check the Boston Parks Department before fixing your trip.
The story behind the tree makes it a good one for older children, and the Common itself is easy with a stroller. Frog Pond, on the same park, usually opens as an outdoor skating rink in winter. From there it is a short walk to the Public Garden and to Faneuil Hall and its shops. Bring warm layers, Boston evenings in December dip below freezing.
- Area: Boston Common, downtown
- Best time: Early December lighting, tree up through the holidays
- Cost: Free
- Getting there: MBTA to Park Street
Children who like a story behind things will remember it. Read up on the 1917 explosion first, then visit the tree.
Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia
Living history meets fireworks in Colonial Williamsburg, which dresses its 18th-century streets with fresh greenery, apples, pinecones and dried fruit, in a style that has become a decorating fashion of its own. The Grand Illumination, with music, fife and drum processions, the lighting of iron cressets and fireworks, is planned for December 5, 12 and 19, 2026.
Children get much more out of Williamsburg than a museum, because costumed interpreters answer questions in character and trades such as blacksmithing and bootmaking happen in front of you. Walk Duke of Gloucester Street in the late afternoon to see the door wreaths, then find a spot for the illumination before dark. Past illuminations have been free to watch from the streets, while entry to the historic buildings needs a ticket. Busch Gardens Williamsburg, close by, runs its own Christmas event if you want a second day.
- Area: Historic Area, Williamsburg
- 2026 dates: Grand Illumination on December 5, 12 and 19
- Cost: Street events free; building tours ticketed
- Getting there: About 2.5 to 3 hours by car from Washington, D.C.
It suits curious kids aged 7 and up. On illumination nights, get to the street early to claim a curb.
McAdenville, North Carolina
West of Charlotte, the small former mill town of McAdenville has called itself Christmas Town USA for generations, and its lights are free. For 2026 they shine from December 1 to 26, from 5:30pm to 10pm each night, after a tree lighting on December 1. The Yule Log Parade is on December 10.
The whole town takes part: hundreds of trees and homes lit in red, white and green, a lake with a fountain reflecting the colours, and a slow loop that families either walk or drive. Driving is the most common way, which suits families with sleepy toddlers, but the line of cars can stretch back to the interstate on weekend evenings. Arrive close to 5:30pm on a weeknight and the queue stays short. Walking the loop lets you stop at the lake and the small vendors without holding up traffic.
- Area: McAdenville, Gaston County
- 2026 dates: December 1 to 26, 5:30pm to 10pm
- Cost: Free
- Getting there: About 20 minutes by car from Charlotte
Young kids love it from the back seat. Pack snacks for the car, since weekend traffic moves at walking pace.
Biltmore Estate, Asheville, North Carolina
Biltmore, the vast Vanderbilt mansion outside Asheville and the grandest house on this list, is a ticketed historic estate that decorates for Christmas on a scale to match: dozens of trees, garlands down the grand staircase and a towering tree in the Banquet Hall. Christmas at Biltmore runs from November 6, 2026 to January 10, 2027. Candlelight Christmas Evenings, when the house is lit by candle and firelight with live music, need a separate, reserved ticket.
This is a ticketed, timed visit, and it is expensive, so it works best for families with children old enough to walk a large house quietly. Book early, because Candlelight evenings in December sell out. Daytime visits are easier with younger children, and the grounds, gardens and the farm area of the estate give them room to run afterwards. Downtown Asheville, 15 minutes away, adds its own lights and holiday shops.
- Area: Biltmore Estate, Asheville
- 2026 season: November 6 to January 10, 2027
- Cost: Ticketed; Candlelight evenings priced separately
- Getting there: Asheville Regional Airport is about 20 minutes away
Older children and grandparents appreciate the house most. With kids under 7, choose a daytime ticket.
Gaylord Opryland, Nashville, Tennessee
In its 43rd year in 2026, A Country Christmas at Gaylord Opryland is our best indoor pick, a resort event built around ice sculptures. Its centrepiece, ICE!, runs from November 6, 2026 to January 2, 2027. This season the sculptures, carved from more than two million pounds of ice, retell Home Alone. The hall is kept at freezing temperatures and visitors are handed parkas at the entrance.
Opryland is a sensible choice for families travelling with small children or anyone who dislikes standing outside in the cold, because nearly everything happens under the glass roofs of the resort. Alongside ICE! you will find millions of lights, gingerbread decorating, skating and an indoor riverboat ride. Tickets for ICE! are timed and the most popular evening slots go first. Staying at the resort is expensive in December, so many families book a cheaper hotel near the airport and drive in.
- Area: Opryland, east Nashville
- 2026 season: November 6 to January 2, 2027
- Cost: Timed tickets for ICE! and activities
- Getting there: About 15 minutes by car from Nashville airport
On a rainy day with young children, this is the easy answer. Bring gloves even though parkas are provided, because the ice slides are cold.
Dollywood, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee
Our best theme park pick, Dollywood runs its Smoky Mountain Christmas from November 6, 2026 to January 3, 2027, with millions of lights strung across the park in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, Christmas shows in the theatres, and most rides still running. The park is not open every day in that window, so check the operating calendar before you book.
Dollywood is a strong pick for families with a range of ages, because there are gentle rides for toddlers and coasters for teenagers in the same park, and the shows give everyone a warm seat. Evenings are the reason to come, when the lights switch on. Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg fill up in December, so book cabins or hotels early. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is next door if you want a winter walk, but some mountain roads close in snow or ice.
- Area: Pigeon Forge, eastern Tennessee
- 2026 season: November 6 to January 3, 2027, selected days
- Cost: Included with park admission
- Getting there: About 45 minutes by car from Knoxville airport
Mixed-age families do well here. Arrive in the afternoon and stay until closing to see the park in daylight and then lit up.
Silver Dollar City, Branson, Missouri
With the most lights of any pick here, An Old Time Christmas at Silver Dollar City runs from November 7, 2026 to January 2, 2027, and is included with regular park admission. The theme park in the Ozark hills near Branson is decorated with around 6.5 million lights, and 2026 brings a new parade, Stars, Lights and Christmas Nights, twice the length of the parade it replaces.
The park has an 1880s mining-town theme, with craftspeople demonstrating glassblowing, candle-making and blacksmithing, which works well for children who prefer watching to riding. Branson itself is a family town full of Christmas shows, so it is easy to make a three-day trip of it. The park is built on steep hills, which matters if you are pushing a stroller or travelling with grandparents. Check the calendar, because the park closes on some weekdays in the season.
- Area: Near Branson, southwest Missouri
- 2026 season: November 7 to January 2, 2027
- Cost: Included with park admission
- Getting there: About 1 hour by car from Springfield airport
Plan a few days of shows and lights here. Save the parade for your second evening, once you know the layout.
Santa Claus, Indiana
Yes, there is a small town called Santa Claus, in southern Indiana, and it has the most fun name on this list and leans into it all year. Its Christmas Celebration runs over three weekends from December 4 to 20, 2026. The Santa Claus Christmas Parade is on Saturday, December 12, at 1pm Central Time and lasts about an hour, and the Festival of Lights runs from December 12 to 19.
Children love the post office here, which has answered letters to Santa for decades and adds a Santa Claus postmark to mail sent in December. Writing a letter or postcard on the spot is a free activity that small children remember. The town also has Holiday World, a theme park that is closed in winter, so do not plan around rides. Accommodation is limited, and families often stay in nearby Evansville or in the area's lodges and cabins.
- Area: Spencer County, southern Indiana
- 2026 dates: Weekends, December 4 to 20
- Cost: Most events free
- Getting there: About 1 hour by car from Evansville
Kids who still write letters to Santa will treasure it. Bring stamped cards to post with the town's Christmas postmark.
Frankenmuth, Michigan
Home to the biggest Christmas store on this list, Frankenmuth is a Bavarian-style shopping town in central Michigan best known for Bronner's CHRISTmas Wonderland, a store so large that families spend hours inside. In the October to December season Bronner's opens 9am to 7pm Monday to Thursday, 9am to 8pm on Friday, 9am to 9pm on Saturday and noon to 6pm on Sunday. It is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day and closes at 4pm on December 24 and 31.
Children wander Bronner's as if it were a museum: rooms of ornaments sorted by theme, nativity scenes, and a light display outside after dark. Personalised ornaments, painted with a child's name while you wait, make a good keepsake. The town adds covered bridges, German-style restaurants famous for chicken dinners, and a riverside walk. Weekend afternoons in December are very busy, and parking at Bronner's can take time.
- Area: Frankenmuth, near Saginaw
- Best time: November to mid-December weekdays
- Cost: Free to browse
- Getting there: About 90 minutes by car from Detroit
It makes one very festive day trip. Order personalised ornaments as soon as you arrive, as they take time.
Natchitoches, Louisiana
The oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase, Natchitoches holds its 100th Christmas Festival in 2026, with fireworks on the riverfront. The light season runs from November 21, 2026 to January 6, 2027, with displays along Cane River Lake and the brick streets of the historic district. The main festival day is listed for Saturday, December 5, but confirm it with the organisers, because some listings differ.
Families come for the fireworks over the river and the lights reflected in the water, which look best from the riverbank steps. The town was the setting for the film Steel Magnolias, and parents may recognise the streets. Try a Natchitoches meat pie, a fried pastry filled with seasoned meat that is the local speciality and easy for children to eat on the move. Hotels and guesthouses fill up for the main festival weekend, so many visitors stay in Alexandria or Shreveport.
- Area: Cane River Lake and downtown
- 2026 season: November 21 to January 6, 2027
- Cost: Lights free; some events ticketed
- Getting there: About 75 minutes by car from Shreveport
Fireworks fans should circle this one. If your kids dislike crowds, pick a weekday night.
San Antonio River Walk, Texas
Best for mild weather, the riverside lights of San Antonio switch on at the Ford Holiday River Parade, which in 2026 is on Friday, November 27, at 6pm. It is the 45th parade, with lit floats sailing along the river, and the theme is "Holiday Wishes Come True." The lights stay on each night into early January.
The River Walk works for families because it is compact, flat and mostly car-free, and December evenings in south Texas are far kinder than in the north. A river barge ride under the lit cypress trees is the easiest way for small children to see it all. Reserved seats for the parade are sold through the River Walk's official site, and free standing spots fill up hours ahead. The Alamo is a few minutes' walk away, and Market Square nearby has Mexican food and crafts.
- Area: Downtown River Walk
- 2026 dates: Parade November 27; lights to early January
- Cost: Lights free; parade seats and barges ticketed
- Getting there: Walk from any downtown hotel
Families escaping cold weather find it easy going. Take a barge ride early in the evening, before the dinner crowd.
Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida
Our best pick for kids in warm weather, the Walt Disney World theme parks run a holiday season from November 13, 2026 to January 6, 2027. At Magic Kingdom, Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party adds a separate-ticket evening event on 25 nights from November 8 to December 22, with tickets priced from $189 to $229 depending on the night. Several dates had already sold out by early October.
The party gives families shorter queues, special parades and "snow" on Main Street, which children who have never seen real snow adore. It is also an expensive evening for a family of four, so weigh it against a regular park day, when you still see the decorations. Christmas week itself is one of the busiest weeks of the year in Orlando. If you can travel in the first half of December, before schools break up, queues are noticeably shorter.
- Area: Lake Buena Vista, Orlando
- 2026 season: November 13 to January 6, 2027
- Cost: Party $189 to $229 per ticket
- Getting there: Orlando International Airport, about 30 minutes
Younger kids who still believe in Santa are the ones it wows. Book party nights early, since the most popular dates sell out.
Disneyland Resort, California
The West Coast theme park pick, Holidays at the Disneyland Resort in Southern California runs from November 13, 2026 to January 6, 2027, across Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure, Downtown Disney and the resort hotels. Sleeping Beauty Castle is lit and decorated, and several rides take on holiday themes for the season.
Disneyland is smaller than its Florida cousin, which makes it easier to cover in one or two days with children. December weather in Anaheim is mild during the day and cool at night, so pack layers. Holiday weekends and the week between Christmas and New Year bring very long waits. Pair the trip with a few days in Los Angeles, where neighbourhoods and malls put on their own lights, and you have a warm-weather Christmas with plenty to do.
- Area: Anaheim, Orange County
- 2026 season: November 13 to January 6, 2027
- Cost: Park tickets, priced by date
- Getting there: About 20 minutes from Santa Ana (SNA) airport
West Coast families can do it without a long flight. Midweek in early December brings the shortest queues.
Bellagio Conservatory, Las Vegas, Nevada
Las Vegas may not sound like a family Christmas, but the Bellagio Conservatory, free and open 24 hours, is our best free indoor sight and one of the best free holiday sights in the country. The glass-roofed garden inside the hotel changes its display with the seasons, and the winter installation uses thousands of flowers, giant ornaments and a huge decorated tree.
Children can walk through without passing through the casino floor if you enter from the hotel lobby, and the Fountains of Bellagio outside run a show every few minutes in the evening. Late morning is the quietest time. Each changeover closes the Conservatory for several days, so check that the holiday display has opened before you plan around it. Hotel rooms on the Strip are cheaper in early December than over New Year.
- Area: Bellagio, Las Vegas Strip
- Best time: Late November to early January
- Cost: Free
- Hours: Open 24 hours
Treat it as a quick, free stop, ideally in the morning for photos without crowds.
Canyon Road, Santa Fe, New Mexico
On Christmas Eve, our Southwest pick for the night, Canyon Road in Santa Fe is lined with farolitos (small paper bags weighted with sand and lit by a candle) and small bonfires called luminarias. The street closes to cars and thousands of people walk it from dusk into the night, stopping to sing carols around the fires. The walk began as a neighbourhood gathering in the 1970s. It is free and needs no reservation.
This is the most moving Christmas Eve on this list, and children enjoy the bonfires and the open galleries along the road. It is also crowded and cold, because Santa Fe sits at about 7,000 feet, so dress for freezing temperatures. Many restaurants close on Christmas Eve or need a reservation weeks ahead. Park well away from the area and walk in, as surrounding streets close to traffic.
- Area: Canyon Road, east Santa Fe
- Date: December 24, from dusk
- Cost: Free
- Getting there: About 1 hour by car from Albuquerque airport
Older kids appreciate it more than toddlers. Book Christmas Eve dinner well in advance, or eat before the walk.
The Polar Express, Durango, Colorado
The best train ride on the list sits in the Rocky Mountains: the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad runs The Polar Express each holiday season, from late November into early January, with tickets required. Children ride in pyjamas, drink hot chocolate, listen to the story read aloud and meet Santa at the "North Pole," before getting a bell to take home.
Durango is a real mountain town with a historic steam railway, which makes the trip feel more special than a ride in a city station. Tickets sell out well ahead, especially for weekend departures before Christmas, so book as soon as the schedule is released. Durango sits at about 6,500 feet, and nights are cold. The Purgatory ski resort is about half an hour north if older children want a day on the slopes.
- Area: Durango, southwest Colorado
- Season: Late November to early January
- Cost: Ticketed; book early
- Getting there: Durango-La Plata County Airport, about 25 minutes
The sweet spot is children aged 3 to 9. Put them in pyjamas for the ride; that is part of the fun.
Leavenworth, Washington
For the best chance of snow, look to Leavenworth, a Bavarian-style village in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. Its Village of Lights, also called Christmastown, runs from late November to Christmas Eve, and the lights on the buildings stay up for weeks afterwards. Lighting ceremonies take place on weekends, but the organisers had not published the 2026 weekend schedule when we checked.
Leavenworth is one of the few places on this list where snow is likely in December, which makes it a favourite for families from the Pacific Northwest. Sledding hills, sleigh rides and a gazebo where carollers sing give children plenty to do. Weekends are extremely busy and parking is limited, so midweek visits are much more relaxed. Stevens Pass, the mountain road from Seattle, can need chains in winter, so check conditions before you drive.
- Area: Leavenworth, central Washington
- 2026 season: Late November to December 24
- Cost: Free to visit; some activities ticketed
- Getting there: About 2.5 hours by car from Seattle
Snow-seeking families should stay overnight, because the lights look best after day-trippers leave.
Solvang, California
A Danish Christmas in California wine country: Solvang, a small Danish-style town in the Santa Ynez Valley north of Santa Barbara, holds Julefest from November 27, 2026 to January 3, 2027. The tree lighting is on December 4 and the Julefest Parade on December 5, and the season ends with a tree burn on January 8, 2027.
With windmills, half-timbered buildings and bakeries selling aebleskiver (round Danish pancakes), Solvang feels like a European Christmas without the long flight. It is small enough to walk in an hour, which suits families with young children, and there are candlelit walks and a nightly light display. The town is busy on weekends with visitors from Los Angeles, a two-to-three-hour drive away, so arrive early to find parking.
- Area: Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Barbara County
- 2026 season: November 27 to January 3, 2027
- Cost: Most events free
- Getting there: About 45 minutes by car from Santa Barbara
You get a Christmas village without the cold. Try aebleskiver warm from a bakery.
Honolulu City Lights, Hawaii
The warmest Christmas on this list, and free, Honolulu City Lights fills the island capital's Honolulu Hale (City Hall) and the Frank F. Fasi Civic Center with a tall tree, lit displays and a celebrated pair of giant figures known as Shaka Santa and Tutu Mele. Opening Night in 2026 is on Saturday, December 5, with a tree lighting and an electric light parade. Afterwards the grounds open daily through December.
A Christmas in Hawaii means beach mornings and lights in the evening, which suits families who find the cold hard with children. The event is free and walking distance from many downtown and Waikiki bus routes. Opening Night is the busiest evening of the season, so if your children are young, go on a quieter weeknight in mid-December. Hotel prices in Waikiki rise sharply from about December 20, so book early.
- Area: Honolulu Hale, downtown Honolulu
- 2026 dates: Opening Night December 5, then daily
- Cost: Free
- Getting there: TheBus from Waikiki, about 20 minutes
Sun by day and lights by night is the appeal. Fit in a sunset beach walk before you head downtown.

Read this before a Christmas trip with kids: Big lighting nights and parades draw crowds that move slowly and can separate a family in seconds. Agree a meeting point the moment you arrive, write your phone number on a card in each child's pocket, and take a photo of the children that morning so you know exactly what they are wearing.
Winter storms in the Northeast, the Midwest and the mountains can close roads and cancel flights in December. Build a spare day into any trip that depends on a single event, and check road conditions before driving to mountain towns such as Leavenworth or Durango.
Tips for a family Christmas trip in the USA
Go in the first two weeks of December if you can. You get the decorations without school-holiday crowds or peak hotel prices, while domestic flights around December 20 to 23 and January 2 to 4 fill fast. Pack for real cold even in the South, and plan Christmas Day meals, since many restaurants close on December 24 and 25.
- Travel in early December. The first two weeks of December have the decorations without the school-holiday crowds or peak hotel prices. Christmas week and New Year cost the most.
- Book flights early. Domestic flights around December 20 to 23 and January 2 to 4 fill fast. Compare dates on our flight search and fly a day or two earlier if you can.
- Check entry rules first. Visitors from abroad need the right visa or travel authorisation for their passport, applied for well before December. Start with our visa section and the official U.S. government portals.
- Pack for real cold. Even southern cities drop near freezing on December nights. Layers, hats, gloves and waterproof boots matter more for children than for adults.
- Plan Christmas Day meals. Many restaurants close on December 24 and 25. Book a hotel with a restaurant, reserve a table weeks ahead or stock up on food the day before.
- Stay close to the lights. A hotel within walking distance of the main event means tired children can go back early. Compare places to stay on our hotel pages.
