Dubla Rash Mela is a traditional Hindu festival celebrated on Dubla Island, located in the Sundarbans region of Bangladesh. The festival honors Lord Krishna and is characterized by religious rituals, cultural performances, and a large fair. It has been celebrated for over 200 years and is considered one of the largest fairs in Bangladesh.
The festival occurs annually during the Bengali month of Agrahayan, which typically falls in November. It spans 5-7 days, coinciding with the full moon period known as Rash Purnima. The exact dates vary each year based on the lunar calendar.
The festival was initiated in 1923 by Hari Bhajan, a disciple of Thakur Hari Chand. Hari Bhajan spent 24 years in the Sundarbans, living off forest fruits, and established the festival to honor Lord Krishna and Thakur Hari Chand. It has since become a major cultural event in the region.
Dubla Rash Mela is a significant cultural event in Bangladesh, attracting thousands of visitors, including foreign tourists. It showcases the rich traditions of the Sundarbans region, including religious practices, cultural performances, and local crafts.
