SEA is the underwater restaurant at Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Its dining room sits around 6 metres (nearly 20 feet) below the surface on the house reef, and it is best known for its underwater wine cellar. It suits wine lovers and couples marking a special occasion.
A handful of tables sit behind the glass walls. Most guests arrive at the resort by seaplane from Velana International Airport near Malé. The view changes through the day. By daylight diners see turtles, butterflyfish, unicornfish and jacks, and at dinner lionfish, reef sharks, moray eels and stingrays come into view.
The cellar is what sets SEA apart from the other underwater restaurants in the Maldives. It holds more than 450 labels, including older vintages from Burgundy, Bordeaux and Napa, and a sommelier is on hand. The resort also runs tastings of wines that have been aged underwater.
The kitchen offers multi-course lunch and dinner menus as well as à la carte choices, with caviar appearing across the menu. Forbes Travel Guide lists Maldivian stone lobster medallion, lobster ceviche, Australian wagyu sirloin and a mango crème brûlée topped with caviar. Breakfast is served on request, and private sunrise sittings can be arranged. It is one of the most expensive meals in the country, so confirm current menus and prices when booking.
SEA is closed on Fridays. Breakfast runs on request from 08:30 to 10:30, lunch from 12:00 to 14:00 and dinner from 19:00. Children are welcome at lunch. Dinner is for adults only, except on Mondays and Thursdays. Advance reservations are advised to secure a date.
Breakfast or lunch is the time to watch reef life clearly. Dinner is better suited to the wine-led menus.
The wine programme has earned recognition outside the Maldives. The World of Fine Wine magazine gave SEA three stars in its World's Best Wine Lists for a second year running in 2016, when the cellar held about 360 labels; it has grown since.
