It suits travellers who want a full-service option out of Hong Kong across Asia-Pacific. There is no alliance; its scheme is Fortune Wings Club. Cabins are Business and Economy.

Hong Kong Airlines is Hong Kong’s second full-service airline, flying an Airbus fleet from Hong Kong International Airport.

What to expect

Hong Kong Airlines (IATA HX) is a full-service airline based at Hong Kong International Airport, with its head office in Tung Chung on Lantau Island. It flies mainly regional routes to mainland China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Southeast Asia, plus a few long-haul routes to Canada and Australia, and suits travellers who want a full-service airline based in Hong Kong for regional trips.

From CR Airways to Hong Kong Airlines

The company was founded on 28 March 2001 as CR Airways by Robert Yip, chairman of China Rich Holdings. It started with a helicopter licence in 2002, flying a Sikorsky S-76C+, and began passenger flights in 2003. In 2006 Hainan Airlines bought 45 per cent, and the airline took the Hong Kong Airlines name that September. Its logo shows the bauhinia flower, the emblem of Hong Kong. Today it belongs to HNA Aviation, which has been controlled by Liaoning Fangda Group since 2021.

Cutbacks and recovery

Hong Kong Airlines went through several hard years. Senior managers resigned in 2018. In 2019 the passenger fleet shrank from 38 to 28 aircraft and flights to Vancouver, Los Angeles and San Francisco were cut back or ended. About 400 jobs went in February 2020, and in June 2021 the A320 fleet was grounded while the airline focused on cargo. Recovery began after Hong Kong reopened. Flights to the Gold Coast and Vancouver returned in January 2025, and a Melbourne service with A330s was planned to start in December 2025.

Regional routes from Hong Kong

Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is the only hub. Most flights are regional, to mainland China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Sources give different destination counts, ranging from about 25 passenger destinations to 47 including cargo, so check the current schedule when you search. Codeshare partners include Asiana, EVA Air, Etihad, Turkish Airlines and WestJet, and the airline links with Hainan Airlines through the group.

Avoid the mix-up

Three Hong Kong airlines have similar names. Cathay Pacific is the largest, HK Express is Cathay's low-cost arm, and Hong Kong Airlines is a separate company in the HNA group. Fares, baggage rules and loyalty schemes are all different, so check the operating airline on your booking.

Travel tip: when you compare fares, look at what is included. A Hong Kong Airlines Economy ticket is a full-service fare, and its baggage allowance depends on the fare and route, so confirm yours on the Hong Kong Airlines website before you travel.

Baggage allowance

Hong Kong Airlines does not give every passenger the same allowance: the route, the cabin and the fare you buy each change it. Your HX e-ticket shows what you have.
