Jaffna
Jaffna travel guide
Nallur's golden gopuram, palmyra toddy and island ferries
Jaffna is the cultural heart of Tamil Sri Lanka, with grand Hindu temples, a rebuilt library, a Dutch fort and island trips into the Palk Strait. January to September is the dry window, with the Nallur festival in July and August. Allow three days. Costs are low, and Sri Lanka's ETA is applied for online.
Jaffna is the Tamil capital of Sri Lanka's far north, set on a flat peninsula of palmyra palms and lagoons closer to India than to Colombo. People travel here for its Hindu temples, a cuisine found nowhere else on the island, and the islands strung out to the west, reached by small ferries.
Its past is layered and often painful. Nallur, now a suburb, was the seat of the medieval Jaffna Kingdom until the Portuguese founded the modern town nearby in the 1620s; the Dutch followed, then the British in 1796. The civil war from 1983 to 2009 brought occupation, destruction and mass emigration, and a city that was once Sri Lanka's second-largest has slipped well down the list.
Reconstruction since 2009 is visible everywhere. The public library, burned in 1981 and since rebuilt, is a moving place to visit. Down by the lagoon, the Dutch star fort has been partly restored.
Religion shapes the calendar. The orange gopuram of the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil dominates the skyline, and its summer festival brings the diaspora home in thousands.
Expect a slower, more traditional place than the south. Dress modestly, eat with your right hand if you like, and give it three days.

Getting there
Palaly flights, the Colombo night train and the Nagapattinam ferry
Jaffna International Airport, the former Palaly airfield near the north coast, reopened in 2019; IndiGo flies from Chennai and, since March 2025, from Tiruchirappalli, making it the quickest way in from India; frequencies change by season. From the airport, take a taxi or three-wheeler into the city. Most travellers from the south come overland. Trains from Colombo take about eight hours, with two services a day including an overnight train with reclining sleeperette seats. Private overnight coaches from Colombo take around seven hours and arrive before dawn, and SLTB buses link Trincomalee. A passenger ferry, first tried in 2023 and run by a private operator since August 2024, links Kankesanthurai harbour with Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu in about four hours; it has paused during monsoon months, so confirm it is sailing.
- IndiGo
- Chennai and Tiruchirappalli flights to JAF
- Colombo train
- About 8 hours, two daily services
- Overnight coach
- About 7 hours from Colombo
- Kankesanthurai ferry
- About 4 hours to Nagapattinam, India
- Book the Colombo train early around the Nallur festival and Thai Pongal.
- Night coaches arrive around 04:00; arrange an early check-in.
Where to stay
Nallur, the fort side, Kankesanthurai
The city is spread out, so choose by what you want to do. Nallur is the obvious base for temple visits and festival time, the older centre near the bus stand and fort has more guesthouses, and the north coast near Kankesanthurai suits those flying or sailing in.
- Nallur
- Walk to the kovil, homestays, booked solid in July and August
- Central Jaffna and Old Park
- Guesthouses near the library, fort and station
- Kankesanthurai coast
- Quiet, near the airport and ferry, far from the centre
- Many guesthouses are family-run and will arrange drivers for the islands.
Getting around
Three-wheelers, scooters and island boats
Distances on the peninsula are long and public buses have little information in English, so most visitors use three-wheelers for city trips and a hired minivan or car with driver for full days. Agree the fare before you get in. Locals ride bicycles and mopeds, and both can be rented, though traffic and stray dogs make cycling less relaxing than it looks. For Nainativu and Delft, ride to the Kurikadduwan jetty at the end of the causeway road and take the ferries from there.
- Three-wheeler
- Quickest way across the city, agree the price first
- Car with driver
- Best value for island and coast days
- Scooter or bicycle hire
- Available from guesthouses
- Start island trips early; the last boats back leave in the afternoon.

- Do not drink tap water; buy bottled or filtered.
- Jellyfish wash up at dawn on some beaches; swim inside the markers.

Weather in Jaffna, month by month
Jaffna's April reaches 34°C, and November pours about 437 mm as the northeast monsoon arrives. January is the mildest month.
Climate figures are approximate long-term averages for Jaffna (NOAA, via Wikipedia).
Kovil mornings, fort afternoons and a day on Nainativu
Three days suit Jaffna. Spend one on Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, the public library and the Dutch fort, one on the island temples of Nainativu, reached by boat from Kurikadduwan jetty, and one on the north coast at the Keerimalai springs and the Murugan temple at Thondaimanaru.
Day one: begin early at the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil for morning prayers before the midday closure. Ride into the centre for the Jaffna Public Library, then spend the late afternoon on the ramparts of Jaffna Fort above the lagoon, the Dutch-era stronghold built on a Portuguese site.
Day two: leave early for the islands. The causeways run west to the Kurikadduwan jetty, where boats cross to Nainativu, holy to Hindus for the Nagapooshani Amman temple and to Buddhists for Nagadeepa Vihara. Back on the mainland, stop at Casuarina Beach on Karaitivu for a late swim.
Day three: drive the north coast to the freshwater springs at Keerimalai and the Selvachannithi Murugan temple at Thondaimanaru, then return to Nallur for the evening puja.
Travellers with more time ride the train south toward Dambulla or back to Colombo.
Odiyal Kool, crab curry and Palmyra treacle
Northern cooking is hotter and more seafood-led than in the south, and much of it relies on the palmyra palm. The dish to seek out is odiyal kool, a thick, spicy broth of crab, prawns, fish and vegetables, bound with palmyra-root flour. It is hard to find anywhere else in Sri Lanka.
Jaffna crab curry, dark with roasted spices, is the other headline plate, best eaten with string hoppers or rice. Vegetarian Tamil restaurants serve rice and curry on banana leaves at lunch, and street stalls fry vadai and dhal vadai through the day.
For dessert, curd and treacle here comes with palmyra treacle, earthier than the kithul syrup used in the south. Drinks run to fresh juice, a nelli gooseberry cordial and toddy, the sweeter version made from palmyra sap. Ice cream parlours near the bus stand are a local institution on hot evenings.
Chariot day at Nallur and the northeast monsoon
January to September is the season to visit, with less than 70 mm of rain in most months. The northeast monsoon soaks October to December and peaks at 437 mm in November. Pick July or August for the Nallur festival, about 25 days of puja that ends with the chariot procession.
The climate here runs opposite to the southwest coast. From January to September rainfall stays mostly under 70 mm a month, with highs climbing from 29C in January to 34C in April. The northeast monsoon then arrives, bringing 235 mm in October, 437 mm in November and 274 mm in December.
The year's great event is the Nallur festival, a temple celebration of about 25 days in July and August that ends with the chariot procession, when devotees pull Murugan's car around the temple streets. Expect huge crowds and strict dress rules.
Thai Pongal, the Tamil harvest festival, falls in mid-January with sweet rice boiled at homes and temples. Deepavali comes in October or November.
For a longer trip, combine Jaffna with the east coast at Trincomalee by bus, or the train south.
