The Kuala Lumpur City Gallery is an attractive tourist spot in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. About 3000 visitors pay visit to the museum every day round the year at the 30,000 square feet establishment. The museum building is an old one in Malaysia and was build during the colonial period. The Kuala Lumpur City Gallery building was built for administrative purposes of the new capital – Federated Malaya States of the then British Government and served the purpose until the independence of the country in 1957. It was also used as a printing house for the British government as the Government Printing facilities in Taiping was closed down.
Large printing machines were fetched at the building of the Kuala Lumpur City Gallery. The Press produced different government reports, books, and tickets for train till 1961. Later the building was used for the postal security bureau. Kuala Lumpur City Hall reconstructed the building and decorated it as the first public library of Kuala Lumpur. The design of the building was done after different principles and various special masonry materials including bricks, columns of plasters, cast irons etc. have been used in its construction.
Exterior design of the building represents the neo-Renaissance architecture and the windows are semi-circular with keystones of different styles. The columns of the building are made of cast iron for a better support. Interestingly, there is no front door at the Kuala Lumpur City Gallery and everyone is to enter using a small door. Roofs of the building have been changed following the climatic condition of the country in 1940.
