The Caves of Drach at Porto Cristo on Mallorca's east coast were explored by Édouard-Alfred Martel in 1896 and are known for the underground Lake Martel and its live classical concert. An adult ticket booked online is about €18.50. Visits run at set times through the day, so book a slot. The tour lasts about an hour.
The caves lie on the edge of Porto Cristo in the municipality of Manacor. Drach means dragon in Catalan. The system is made of four connected caves, the Black Cave, the White Cave, the Cave of Luis Salvador and the Cave of the French, stretching about 2.4 kilometres and reaching a depth of around 25 metres. Seawater from the nearby Mediterranean may have played a part in their formation.
A written mention of the caves survives from 1338. The German explorer M. F. Will mapped the White and Black caves in 1880, and in 1896 the French speleologist Édouard-Alfred Martel explored the system, found two further caves and discovered the large underground lake that now bears his name. The engineer Carles Buïgas created the first electric lighting system in 1935.
The guided route follows a path of about 1,200 metres past stalactites, stalagmites and still pools reflecting the lit ceilings.
Lake Martel, about 115 metres long and 30 metres wide, is the climax of the visit. Visitors sit in an underground auditorium while musicians on lit boats play a short classical concert on the water, and afterwards many cross part of the lake by boat before walking out.
Entry is by timed ticket, best booked online in summer, when slots sell out. Visits run several times a day and last about an hour. Morning slots are usually less crowded than mid afternoon. The cave stays cool year round, and steps are uneven in places. Porto Cristo harbour, about a kilometre away, is the place for lunch afterwards.
Lake Martel is between four and twelve metres deep. Water reached the cave from the Mediterranean through its entrance. Some researchers date the formation of the system to the Miocene epoch, millions of years ago. The concert is played by a small orchestra on rowboats, and the visit ends after it.
