Manama travel guide
Souq lanes, Dilmun ruins and the Pearling Path.
Manama, Bahrain's capital, packs an old souq, the Bahrain National Museum and the Al Fateh Grand Mosque into a compact waterfront city. Two UNESCO sites lie close by: Qal'at al-Bahrain and the Pearling Path in Muharraq. November to March is mild; allow two to three days. Prices are mid-range, and the eVisa can be applied for in advance at evisa.gov.bh.
Manama is the capital and largest city of Bahrain, an island kingdom in the Persian Gulf linked to Saudi Arabia by the King Fahd Causeway. The city grew around its souq and harbour and now stretches along the northern coast of Bahrain Island, with business towers in Seef and the diplomatic area and older lanes behind Bab Al Bahrain.
Visitors come for the Bahrain National Museum, the Al Fateh Grand Mosque and the souq, and for two UNESCO World Heritage Sites close by: Qal'at al-Bahrain and the Pearling Path in Muharraq. Manama was the Arab Capital of Culture in 2012.

Visas and entry
eVisa through the official portal
Many nationalities can get a Bahrain visa on arrival or apply in advance for an eVisa on the government portal evisa.gov.bh. Processing usually takes a few working days. Print the approval and carry it with your passport, and check your nationality's rules on the portal before booking.
- Apply online
- evisa.gov.bh (official)
- Arrival
- Bahrain International Airport or the King Fahd Causeway
Getting there
Bahrain International and the causeway
Bahrain International Airport (BAH) is on Muharraq Island, about 7 km from Manama's business district, so taxis reach most hotels in 15 to 20 minutes outside rush hour. Overland visitors from Saudi Arabia cross the King Fahd Causeway, a 24 km four-lane road opened in 1986.

- Muharraq Island, about 7 km from the centre
- King Fahd Causeway
- 24 km to Saudi Arabia, opened 1986
- Expect long queues on the causeway at weekend evenings.
Money and costs
Dinar, cards and contactless
The Bahraini dinar is pegged to the US dollar and divided into 1,000 fils, so prices often show three decimal places. Cards and contactless payment work in malls, hotels, restaurants and most taxis booked through apps. Keep some small notes for the souq, tea stalls and tips.
- Read prices carefully: BD 1.500 means one and a half dinars.
- Carry small notes for the souq and cafés.
Staying safe
Heat and traffic
Bahrain is a safe country for visitors, and the main risk is summer heat, with average highs near 40°C from June to August. Drink water, keep outdoor sightseeing to early morning or evening, and take care crossing wide roads, where traffic moves fast.

Where to stay
Seef, Juffair and the old centre

Getting around
Taxis, ride apps and buses
Manama is spread out and hot for much of the year, so taxis and ride-hailing apps are the practical way to get around. Public buses link the main districts cheaply. A hire car or driver is useful for Qal'at al-Bahrain, the Bahrain International Circuit at Sakhir and the south of the island.

Manama weather by month
Manama's airport station records just 94 mm of rain a year, nearly all between November and March. NOAA normals show highs near 40°C in July and August.
Climate figures are approximate 1991–2020 averages for Bahrain International Airport (NOAA, via Wikipedia).
National Museum and souq, then Qal'at al-Bahrain and Muharraq
Spend day one in central Manama: the Bahrain National Museum in the morning, then Bab Al Bahrain and the lanes of Manama Souq, and the Al Fateh Grand Mosque in late afternoon. On day two, visit Qal'at al-Bahrain on the north coast and walk the Pearling Path in Muharraq at dusk.
The Bahrain National Museum, inaugurated on 15 December 1988 and designed by the Danish architects Krohn & Hartvig Rasmussen, is widely described as the region's first modern museum. Its halls cover Dilmun burial mounds, traditional trades and Bahrain's natural history.
Bab Al Bahrain marks the entrance to Manama Souq, historically the core of the city. The lanes behind it sell spices, textiles, gold and perfume. The souq quarter is also the setting for the Muharram processions, which draw hundreds of thousands of people each year.
The Al Fateh Grand Mosque in Juffair, opened in 1988, holds about 7,000 worshippers and is Bahrain's largest mosque. Free guided tours for non-Muslims run outside prayer times; robes are provided. Check the day's schedule, because the mosque is busiest on Fridays.
Qal'at al-Bahrain and the Pearling Path, Bahrain's World Heritage Sites
Both of Bahrain's World Heritage Sites are within half an hour of central Manama. Qal'at al-Bahrain, the ancient harbour and capital of Dilmun, was inscribed in 2005. The Pearling Path in Muharraq, inscribed in 2012, traces the island's pearl-diving economy through houses, shops and oyster beds.
Qal'at al-Bahrain is an artificial mound built up by thousands of years of settlement, topped by a fort built by the Portuguese, who held Bahrain from 1521 to 1602. Excavations have revealed layers from the Dilmun period onwards. The site museum explains the finds, and sunset over the walls is the best time to visit.
The Pearling Path runs for about 3 km through old Muharraq, linking merchants' houses, warehouses and a mosque with the seashore where boats set out for the oyster beds. Restored buildings along the way open as small museums and visitor centres. Come in the cooler evening and continue to a Muharraq café for dinner.
Cool months from November to March, and how Ramadan changes Manama
November to March is the comfortable season, with highs of 21–28°C and almost all of Manama's 94 mm of yearly rain.
January is the coolest month, around 21°C by day and 15°C at night, cool enough for a light jacket in the evening. April and October are transitional months, warm by day but pleasant after dark.
Ramadan changes daily life: offices and many shops open shorter hours, and restaurants come alive after sunset. Because it follows the Islamic lunar calendar, Ramadan is expected to start about 11 days earlier each year, and exact dates depend on moon sighting. Eid al-Fitr follows, with public holidays and busy malls.
