What to expect

Myanmar Airways International, usually shortened to MAI, has flown since 1993 and is a privately owned Myanmar airline focused on regional international routes. Its hub is Yangon International Airport, with Mandalay as a second base.

Thailand is MAI's busiest foreign market. From Yangon it flies to both Bangkok airports, Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK), as well as to Chiang Mai and Phuket. Mandalay has its own flights to Suvarnabhumi and Chiang Mai, so travellers from upper Myanmar do not need to route through Yangon to reach Thailand.

Beyond Thailand the network covers Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Phnom Penh, Vientiane, Guangzhou, Seoul and three Indian cities: Kolkata, Chennai and Delhi. At home it serves Mandalay, Heho, Sittwe, Myitkyina, Kawthaung and several smaller towns.

MAI announced a Yangon to Dhaka route in 2024, but we have not found a confirmed schedule for it. For most international visitors the practical gateways to Yangon are Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Conditions inside Myanmar have been unsettled since 2021, so read your government's current travel advice and check Myanmar's entry rules before you book.

Where did MAI come from?

MAI started flying in August 1993 as a joint venture between state-owned Myanma Airways and Highsonic Enterprises of Singapore, with Royal Brunei Airlines providing support in the early years. Singapore's Region Air took a 49% stake from 1 January 2001, and in 2002 MAI received its own IATA codes and joined the IATA interline and clearing systems. The codeshare with Thai Airways on the Bangkok to Yangon route dates from 2003. Management passed fully to MAI in February 2007. Its domestic sister airline, formerly Air KBZ, was renamed Mingalar in March 2024.

The airline's IATA code is 8M and its ICAO code is MMA. It employs more than 1,700 people, its chairman is U Aung Aung Zaw and its chief executive is Tanes Kumar.

Safety and recognition

MAI was the first airline in Myanmar to pass the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), the standard safety review used across the industry. It was named the Most Admired ASEAN Enterprise in Myanmar at the 2014 ASEAN Business Awards and Airline of the Year at the 6th Incheon Airport Awards in 2022, and it sponsored the 2013 Southeast Asian Games held in Myanmar.

Practical habits for booking and flying with MAI.

  1. 01

    Match the Bangkok airport

Most international flights into Bangkok land at Suvarnabhumi. Pick the MAI departure from Suvarnabhumi too and you avoid a cross-city transfer to Don Mueang.

    BKK vs DMK
  2. 02

    Read the travel advice first

Government advice on Myanmar is updated often and differs by region. Check it, and your insurance cover, before paying for a ticket.

    Before you book
  3. 03

    Prepay extra weight

If you expect to go over the free allowance, prepaid excess baggage bought ahead of the flight costs noticeably less than the airport rate.

  4. 04

    Use the Mandalay flights

Heading to Mandalay, Bagan or the hill country? The direct Mandalay services from Bangkok and Chiang Mai skip the domestic leg from Yangon.
