Flying from Yangon to Chiang Mai

Myanmar Airways International (MAI) flies nonstop from Yangon International Airport (RGN) to Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) in northern Thailand. The 364 km flight takes about 55 minutes and gives Myanmar travellers, workers and students a direct link to the Thai north without changing in Bangkok.
Myanmar Airways International is the only airline listed on the route. It is a full-service airline, so a checked bag is normally included in economy; the allowance on your booking is what counts. Order a Muslim or other special meal at least 24 hours before departure.
Flight 8M370 and MAI's three weekly services
MAI began flying Yangon to Chiang Mai on 3 April 2024, three times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with a 95-seat Embraer E190. At launch, flight 8M370 left Yangon at 12:15 and reached Chiang Mai at 13:45 local time, and introductory one-way fares started at USD 119. Myanmar National Airlines also operated the route then, four times a week with an ATR 72. Days and times have shifted since, so check the search for your date.
Mingaladon traffic and the three-hour check-in rule
The airport is in Mingaladon, about 15 km north of downtown, and the drive can take 45 minutes or more in traffic. For an international flight, aim to arrive about three hours before departure. Myanmar has been unsettled since 2021; check your government's travel advice before you go.
Visa-free stays for 60 countries since September 2026
Entry rules for Thailand depend on your nationality. All foreign visitors complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours before landing; see our Thailand visa page for details. Since 15 September 2026, eligible tourists from 60 countries and territories can stay 30 days without a visa, down from the previous 60.
The airport is just south-west of the old city walls. AOT lists shuttle vans at flat fares from Gate 12 of the international terminal: 40 baht on route A1 to Nimmanhaemin, Huay Kaew and the moat, 40 baht on route A2 to Mahidol Road, the Night Bazaar and Chang Khlan Road, and 60 baht on route A3 to Ring Road 2. The yellow and red city bus lines run from 06:00 to 23:30. Taxis and Grab reach most hotels in 15 to 20 minutes, and car rental desks are on the first floor.
Chiang Mai's climate and the 30-minute clock change
Chiang Mai is most comfortable from November to February, with warm days and evenings as cool as about 10°C. From April the heat reaches about 40°C, and the rainy season runs roughly from June to October.
Move your watch forward 30 minutes on landing (Myanmar is UTC+6:30, Thailand UTC+7). For onward trips, fly from Chiang Mai to Bangkok and connect there, for instance to South Asia from Suvarnabhumi (see Bangkok to Dhaka flights).
