The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat, Old Cairo, near Coptic Cairo, opened fully in 2021 and tells Egypt's story from prehistory to today, with the Royal Mummies Hall at its centre. Foreign adults pay EGP 550 and students EGP 300. It opens daily 9:00 to 17:00, plus 18:00 to 21:00 on Fridays. Allow two to three hours.
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) is Egypt's museum of the whole sweep of the country's history, from prehistory to the present, on Al-Fustat Road in the Ain el-Sira area of Old Cairo. It suits first-time visitors who want to see the royal mummies and anyone who wants the story of Egypt told in one building, close to Coptic Cairo and the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As.
NMEC opened partially in 2017 and was officially inaugurated on 3 April 2021, when 22 royal mummies, 18 kings and 4 queens, were moved from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square in a televised procession known as the Pharaohs' Golden Parade. It was the first museum in Egypt planned to cover the entire span of Egyptian civilization, and its collection numbers about 50,000 objects.
The Main Gallery is arranged both by period, from the prehistoric and Pharaonic eras through Greco-Roman, Coptic and Islamic times to the modern age, and by themes such as the Nile, writing, state and society, material culture and belief. Textiles, jewellery, tools, statues and manuscripts sit side by side to show how daily life changed. A separate Textile Gallery and the Dye House cover Egypt's long weaving tradition, and temporary exhibitions change through the year.
The Royal Mummies Gallery, below the main floor, is the reason most people come. Rulers such as Ramesses II, Seqenenre Tao and Hatshepsut lie in climate-controlled cases in dim galleries designed to recall the Valley of the Kings, each with notes on the ruler's life and health. Keep your voice down; staff ask for quiet.
