Giza
Giza travel guide
The Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum.
Giza, on Cairo's west bank, is home to the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum with Tutankhamun's treasures. Visit from October to April, go early to beat heat and crowds, and allow 1 to 2 days, plus Saqqara and Dahshur. It is good value, and many nationalities get an e-Visa or a visa on arrival.
Giza, on the west bank of the Nile opposite Cairo, is home to the Giza pyramid complex: the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the last surviving wonder of the ancient world, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, and the Great Sphinx. They form part of the UNESCO-listed Memphis and its Necropolis, which also includes Saqqara and Dahshur.
Next to the plateau stands the Grand Egyptian Museum, which displays the full Tutankhamun collection. Sphinx International Airport serves the west of Greater Cairo, and many hotels near the pyramids have direct views of the plateau.

Visas and entry
e-Visa or visa on arrival
Most visitors need a visa for Egypt, and citizens of many countries can buy an e-Visa online before travel or get a visa on arrival at major airports. Travellers flying straight to Sharm El Sheikh and other South Sinai resorts can enter on a free stamp valid only for that area for up to 15 days.
- Apply online
- visa2egypt.gov.eg (official)
- Passport validity
- At least 6 months
Getting there
Cairo or Sphinx airport
Fly into Sphinx International Airport (SPX), west of Giza, the closest to the pyramids, with a growing number of flights, mostly on budget carriers such as Wizz Air and Air Arabia. Cairo International (CAI) is Egypt's main hub but lies about 1 to 1.5 hours away by road, on the far side of the city.
- From Cairo
- Taxi or Uber, 45–90 minutes depending on traffic
- Sphinx Airport
- About 30 minutes to the pyramids
Money and costs
Pounds, tips and cards
Carry Egyptian pounds in small notes and use cards for the bigger bills. Cards work at hotels, large restaurants and the ticket offices at the main sites, many of which are now card-only, while tipping (baksheesh) is part of daily life for guides, drivers and anyone who does you a favour.
- Many major sites accept only card payments for tickets.
- Agree prices for camel and horse rides before you start.
Health and vaccines
Heat and water
Drink bottled water in Egypt, avoid raw salads where hygiene is doubtful, and protect yourself from strong sun, which stays intense even in winter. Carry a hat, sunscreen and water on every sightseeing day, and plan outdoor sites for the early morning in the hotter months.
- Hospitals
- Good private hospitals in Cairo and resort towns
Staying safe
Touts and advisories
Most visits to Egypt's tourist areas are trouble-free, and the main sites are heavily policed. Expect persistent touts at the big monuments and agree prices before any ride or service. Check your own government's travel advice before you go, as several governments advise against travel to parts of Sinai and the border areas.
- Tourist police
- 126
- Be firm and polite with touts; use licensed guides.
Where to stay
Near the pyramids
Stay beside the Giza plateau for pyramid views and early starts at the 07:00 opening. Hotels, homestays and hostels at every price cluster near the pyramid entrance in Nazlet El-Semman, many with a direct view, and the Marriott Mena House, a royal lodge from 1869, is a five-minute walk from the main gate.
- Pyramids area
- Hotels with views of the plateau
- Central Cairo / Zamalek
- Wider choice, longer drive
Getting around
Car or Uber
Use Uber, Careem, InDrive or a car with driver in Giza, since buses stop about 500 m short of the pyramid gate. The metro reaches Giza station, with bus 2001 and microbuses running on to the pyramids, and official electric shuttle buses link the monuments on the plateau itself.
- Saqqara and Dahshur
- About 30–45 minutes south
- Sphinx International Airport, west of Giza, suits pyramid stays; from Cairo International allow a full city crossing.
- Ask microbus drivers for "Haram", the local name for the pyramids district.
- The old Mena Gate is closed, and the new main gate to the south, opened in summer 2025, means a shuttle bus or long walk to the monuments.
- On the way back, taxis wait by the exit near the Sphinx.
- For Saqqara without a car, take the metro to El Monib, a microbus to El Badrasheen (25 to 30 minutes), then a 20-minute tuk-tuk.
SIM and internet
Vodafone, Orange, Etisalat (e&), WE
Buy a tourist SIM at airport arrivals in Egypt from Vodafone, Orange, Etisalat (e&) or WE, registering it with your passport. A local number and data make ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem easier to use, and the same shops sell top-ups across the country.

Culture and etiquette
Conservative dress
Dress modestly in Egypt away from the beach resorts, covering shoulders and knees in towns, mosques and churches. Egypt is a Muslim-majority country with a large Coptic Christian minority, women may be asked to cover their hair inside mosques, and Friday midday prayers are the busiest time at mosques.
- Cover shoulders and knees in towns and at mosques
- Women cover their hair in mosques
- Photographing police, military sites or people without asking
- Public displays of affection

Giza weather by month
Giza has a hot desert climate with almost no rain and summer highs near 40°C. Figures are long-term averages for Cairo International Airport, the nearest long-term weather station.

Separate days for the plateau, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Saqqara
Plan two separate days for Giza: one for the pyramid plateau, which opens at 07:00, and one for the Grand Egyptian Museum, 2 km away, which needs at least four hours. Add a third day for Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur to the south, with a car and driver booked a day ahead.
For the mosques, bazaars and Coptic churches across the river, turn to our Cairo guide.
- Plateau day: be at the gate when it opens at 07:00. If you want to go inside the Great Pyramid, buy that separate ticket first, because interior visits need an early start. Walk the site anti-clockwise, head out west of the pyramids for the panorama and finish down at the Sphinx.
- Museum day: Grand Egyptian Museum tickets are sold online only, so buy before you go. The Tutankhamun gallery is the highlight; reach it while your energy is fresh. On Wednesdays and Saturdays the doors stay open until 21:00.
- South of Giza: Saqqara comes first: the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the Serapeum and the Imhotep Museum. Memphis and Dahshur, with its Red Pyramid, fill the afternoon. Saqqara opens 9AM to 5PM, closing at 4PM in winter.
Giza station sits on the main line to Luxor and Aswan and most trains stop there, so you can head up the Nile valley without crossing to Ramses; some seasonal sleepers even start here.
Many visitors prefer the smaller gate at the south-east corner near the Sphinx, where tickets are sold from an office in an alley on the right; you enter almost beneath the Sphinx and walk uphill to the pyramids.
Best time to visit Giza for heat, dust and crowds on the plateau
Visit Giza between October and April and arrive at the 07:00 opening, because the plateau has almost no shade. Winter highs run between 16 and 20°C with nights below 7°C, while summer highs can touch 40°C; March and April bring Saharan dust storms, and Fridays bring large crowds of Egyptian families.
Between October and April the midday sun is not hot, but the UV is still strong; a hat matters in January as much as in June. Bring a fleece for the first hour after opening. The complex closes at 16:00 in winter and 17:00 in summer.
The pyramid interiors are hot and humid in any season. If you come between May and September, be through the gate at opening and leave the plateau before the midday heat. Save the museum galleries for the afternoon.
March and April bring the spring windstorms that carry Saharan dust off the desert; on a bad day the pyramids fade into a brown haze. Pick a weekday over a Friday if you can.
The sound and light show plays after dark at the foot of the plateau, with the first performance in English. Show times shift by half an hour with the seasons: 7PM, 8PM and 9PM from October to March, starting at 7:30PM from April to September.
Nazlet El-Semman food, tipping and camel rules at the pyramids
Eat in Nazlet El-Semman, the neighbourhood at the pyramid entrance, for cheap Egyptian food such as falafel at El Gizawy, or at Khufu's Restaurant inside the site. On the plateau, expect requests for a tip for any favour, never climb the pyramids, and pay camel or horse handlers only back at the starting point.
Pizza Hut and KFC face the Sphinx from across the road by the main ticket gates.
El Gizawy in Nazlet El-Semman serves falafel and Egyptian pasta to a mostly local crowd. El Mandara Coffee Shop on Abou Al Mohsen is a plain local café for black tea, Egyptian coffee and a water pipe.
Alcohol is rare on this side of the river outside hotels. The Mena House's Khan El Khalili restaurant has been open for more than a century and is the smartest place in Giza for lunch or a cold beer, at Western prices.
The hustlers posing near the Sphinx usually give up if you shake your head and say nothing. Before riding a horse or camel, look at how the animals are kept. Extra demands at the end are part of the routine.
