Marriott Mena House, Cairo is a five-star hotel at 6 Pyramids Road in Giza, at the foot of the Giza plateau just outside Cairo, Egypt. Its gardens look straight at the Great Pyramid, about 760 m away, and the Great Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum are both within about 1.6 km. Travellers who want to wake up next to the pyramids stay here.
The story starts in 1869, when a hunting lodge was built on the site for Khedive Isma'il Pasha. It was later expanded and opened to the public as a hotel in the 1880s. In 1890 it opened what is described as Egypt's first swimming pool and began operating year-round, and in 1977 it hosted the Mena House Conference between Egypt and Israel, which led towards the Camp David Accords.
A 200-room garden wing was added in 1978. Marriott International took over management, and in 2018 the garden wing was renamed Marriott Mena House, Cairo. The historic palace wing has closed for renovation and is set to reopen as JW Marriott Cairo Mena House.
All guests currently stay in the garden wing. Most rooms are about 35 to 36 m², with a king bed or two twin beds, and many have a balcony facing the gardens or the pyramids. Grand Deluxe Rooms of about 65 m² and Pyramid Suites of about 74 m² give more space, and some rooms include Executive Lounge access.
139 Pavilion, on the garden terrace with a direct view of the pyramids, serves international dishes at every meal with live music at dinner. Alfredo serves Italian food and The Moghul Room Indian cooking, both from 16:00 to 23:00. There is also a bar, a snack bar and room service. Breakfast is a set menu and costs about US$30 for adults and children aged 11 to 17 and US$15 for ages 6 to 10 when not included; children 5 and under eat free. The hotel's 40 acres of gardens hold an outdoor pool with a bar serving ice cream and snacks, a free gym, an indoor whirlpool and the Saray spa, with scrubs, massages and facials. The M Club lounge adds a premium concierge service.
The historic Mena House golf course lies across the road. Its 18 holes are played over nine fairways, all within sight of the pyramids, so book a morning tee time if you want to play before the midday heat.
Sphinx International Airport (SPX) is about 27 km away and Cairo International Airport (CAI) about 35 km by road. The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square is about 12 km. The hotel has no car park of its own, and guests use a public car park nearby for about US$9 per day. Check-in is from 3:00 PM and check-out is by 12:00 PM, and the main guest must be at least 18. Contact the hotel ahead if you will arrive late. Pets are not allowed.
