The cheapest places to spend New Year 2027 are cities where hotels, food and local transport cost less all year and the main celebration is free to watch. In Europe, that points to Budapest, Lisbon, Tbilisi, Sofia, Bucharest, Tirana and Istanbul; in Asia to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi and Phnom Penh; and further afield to Marrakech, the Tunisian coast and Mexico City. You will still pay New Year prices for a room on the 31st, but the gap between a normal week and the holiday week is smaller than in Sydney, London or New York, and a good dinner costs a fraction of a big-city gala.

This guide compares 14 budget-friendly destinations, explains how each one celebrates and links to our full New Year 2027 guide for each. We do not quote exact hotel prices, which change daily and depend on when you book; instead we describe the cost level and what makes each place good value. Use our guide to beating the New Year price surge for booking tactics that work anywhere.

Budget New Year destinations at a glance

The cheapest places for New Year 2027 with a free main event include Budapest, Lisbon, Tbilisi and Sofia in Europe, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur in Asia, and Mexico City. The table compares each destination by region, New Year weather and what it suits best.

The table sorts the destinations by region. "Free main event" means the biggest public celebration does not need a ticket.

Budget New Year destinations in Europe

Central and eastern Europe give the cheapest European New Year. Budapest's Szilveszter fills the Danube embankments with crowds and fireworks, followed by the thermal baths on New Year's Day, and Lisbon, Tbilisi, Sofia, Bucharest, Tirana and Istanbul all hold free public celebrations.

Europe has the most choice for a lower-cost New Year, especially in the centre and east of the continent, where daily costs are well below those in London, Paris or Amsterdam.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is one of the most popular budget choices for New Year in Europe. The celebrations, called Szilveszter, spread across the city, with crowds on the Danube embankments and the bridges, fireworks over the river and parties in the ruin bars of the old Jewish Quarter. On New Year's Day, many visitors recover in the thermal baths, such as Széchenyi, where you can sit in hot outdoor pools in the winter air. Food and public transport are reasonably priced compared with Western Europe, though hotel rates rise over the holiday like everywhere else. Our Budapest New Year 2027 guide lists the viewing spots and the bridges that close to traffic.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is one of the more affordable capitals in Western Europe and has a mild winter, which makes an outdoor New Year easier. The main free event is usually a concert and fireworks at Praça do Comércio on the river. Many Portuguese also follow the custom of eating twelve raisins at midnight. Porto is another good option, with fireworks over the Douro. Read our Portugal guide for both cities and Madeira, which is more expensive because of its famous fireworks.

Tbilisi, Georgia

Tbilisi combines very low costs with an exceptional food and wine culture. New Year is the biggest celebration of the year in Georgia: residents set off fireworks across the city at midnight, and families gather for a supra, a long feast with toasts. Some Georgians also mark the Old New Year on 13 January. Flights from Western Europe and the Gulf are often reasonably priced. See our Georgia guide.

Sofia, Bulgaria

Sofia is among the lower-cost capitals in the European Union and usually holds a free open-air New Year concert with well-known local performers and fireworks at midnight. The ski resorts of Bansko and Borovets are a few hours away, for a winter-sports holiday that costs less than the Alps. Read our Bulgaria guide.

Bucharest, Romania

Bucharest keeps costs similarly low and puts on its own free open-air concerts, ending with fireworks at midnight. Romania adds folk traditions such as the bear dance in the north-east. Read our Romania guide.

Tirana, Albania

Tirana is one of the cheapest capitals in Europe and has grown into a lively city with colourful buildings, busy cafés and nightlife in the Blloku district. The main celebration usually takes place in Skanderbeg Square with a concert and fireworks. Albania's coast is quiet in winter, so treat this as a city break. See our Albania guide.

Istanbul, Türkiye

Istanbul offers fireworks over the Bosphorus, celebrations around Taksim and Ortaköy, and some of the best food in the region at modest prices. Ferries are a cheap way to see the city from the water on New Year's Day. Hotel prices rise around the 31st, but the range is wide, from boutique hotels in the old town to large chains. Our Turkey guide covers Istanbul and Cappadocia, where some hotels hold New Year dinners in caves.

Budget New Year destinations in Asia

Southeast Asia offers warm weather and some of the lowest daily costs anywhere, with lively countdowns in the big cities. Flights from Europe and North America are long, but the savings on the ground are large.

Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok celebrates with fireworks along the Chao Phraya River, especially at ICONSIAM, and with countdowns at large shopping centres and in the main entertainment districts. Rooftop bars hold expensive parties, but the riverside fireworks can be seen for free, and street food remains cheap even over the holidays. December is in the cool, dry season, which makes it one of the most pleasant times to visit. Our Bangkok New Year 2027 guide lists where to watch.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur's main countdown is held around the Petronas Twin Towers and the KLCC park, with fireworks at midnight, and the Merdeka Square area also often holds events. The city has good-quality hotels at prices well below other Asian hubs such as Singapore and Hong Kong. See our Kuala Lumpur guide and the wider Malaysia guide for Penang and Langkawi.

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Vietnam is one of the cheapest countries in Asia for travellers. In Hanoi, crowds gather around Hoan Kiem Lake for the countdown; in Ho Chi Minh City, the walking street of Nguyen Hue and the riverside are the main spots. Remember that Vietnam's biggest holiday is Tết, the Lunar New Year, in late January or February, so 1 January is a smaller celebration. See our Vietnam guide.

Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, Cambodia

Cambodia uses the US dollar widely and has low costs for food and rooms. Phnom Penh's riverside fills on New Year's Eve, and Siem Reap's Pub Street becomes a street party. Siem Reap is also the base for the Angkor temples, so you can combine a night out with sunrise at Angkor Wat. Our Cambodia guide has the details.

Budget New Year destinations in Africa and the Americas

Outside Europe and Asia, the best-value New Year choices are Marrakech, with sunny days and good-value riads but no big public fireworks, the Tunisian coast at Sousse, Hammamet and Djerba with gala-dinner packages, and Mexico City.

Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech has sunny winter days, cold nights and a wide range of riads, the traditional guesthouses built around a courtyard, many of which offer good value. Morocco does not hold big public fireworks shows, so most celebrations are dinners and parties at hotels and riads, and the price of these varies a lot. Desert trips to Merzouga or Agafay are popular around New Year. Read our Morocco guide.

The Tunisian coast

Resorts in Sousse, Hammamet and Djerba sell good-value New Year packages, usually with a gala dinner included in the price. The weather is mild, too cool for swimming, so this suits travellers who want sunshine and walks. See our Tunisia guide and the Sousse guide.

Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico City is a world-class food city with low costs for visitors. Many families celebrate at home with a late dinner and the twelve grapes, and the city often holds public events in the Zócalo and along Paseo de la Reforma. Beach towns such as Playa del Carmen and Tulum are far busier and more expensive over the holidays. Our Mexico guide compares the options.

Budget destinations by travel style

For winter atmosphere on a budget, choose Budapest, Sofia, Bucharest or Tbilisi. For sunshine, choose Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap or Ho Chi Minh City, which are warm and mostly dry in late December. The other trip styles are paired with destinations below.

The right budget destination depends on what you want from the trip as much as on cost. These pairings come from the destinations above.

For winter atmosphere

Budapest, Sofia, Bucharest and Tbilisi give you cold, clear nights, winter markets in December and the feel of a European winter at lower prices than Vienna, Prague or Munich. Pack warm boots and layers, since you will be outdoors for hours at midnight. Sofia adds the option of a few days skiing at Bansko or Borovets, where lift passes and rentals usually cost less than in the Alps.

For sunshine

Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Ho Chi Minh City are warm and mostly dry in late December. Kuala Lumpur is hot and humid with a chance of rain. Marrakech has sunny days but cold nights, and Lisbon is mild with rain likely. If a beach is a must, combine Bangkok with a few days on the Thai islands, but expect island resorts to be expensive and to apply minimum stays over New Year.

For food lovers

Tbilisi, Istanbul, Mexico City, Bangkok and Hanoi are some of the best food cities in the world, and eating well in all five costs much less than in Western Europe or North America. Street food and neighbourhood restaurants keep their normal prices over the holidays, even when hotel rates rise.

For a party

Budapest's ruin bars, Bangkok's rooftops and riverside, Lisbon's Bairro Alto and Istanbul's Taksim area are the liveliest choices on this list. Ticketed parties sell out, but there are plenty of free street celebrations.

For a quiet, cultural New Year

Siem Reap for the Angkor temples, Marrakech for the medina and a desert trip, and Hanoi for its old quarter and lakes suit travellers who want something calmer than a big-city party.

Getting there for less

Flights are often the biggest single cost of a New Year trip. In Europe, low-cost airlines serve Budapest, Lisbon, Sofia, Bucharest, Tirana, Tbilisi and Istanbul from many cities, and their seasonal sales in autumn often include December dates. Flying on 31 December or 1 January can be cheaper than the days around them. For Southeast Asia, compare routes through the main hubs in the Gulf, Istanbul, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, and consider flying into one city and out of another to avoid backtracking. Overnight trains and long-distance buses are a low-cost alternative between neighbouring countries in both regions.

Once you arrive, most of these cities have cheap public transport or ride-hailing apps. Avoid taxis right after midnight, when prices rise and roads near the celebrations close.

Where to stay on a budget

In every city on this list, hotels near the main square or riverfront cost the most on the 31st. A few metro stops or a short walk away, rooms are cheaper and the area is quieter after midnight. Guesthouses, riads and family-run hotels often give the best value in Marrakech, Tbilisi, Hanoi and Siem Reap. In Budapest, Lisbon and Istanbul, apartments with a kitchen help families and groups save on meals, though you should check the minimum stay and cleaning fee. Wherever you book, choose free cancellation if you can, and check the price again closer to the date.

How to keep a New Year trip cheap anywhere

Keep a New Year trip cheap by watching the free fireworks, staying a few stops from the main square, eating your big meal on the 30th or at lunch on the 31st, using public transport on the night, and flying on 31 December or 1 January.

Watch the free display. In almost every city on this list, the main fireworks are free. Ticketed galas and club nights are where costs climb.

Stay outside the busiest area. A hotel a few stops away from the main square costs less and is easier to reach than the city centre on the night.

Eat well, but not on the 31st. Set New Year's Eve menus carry large markups. Have a good dinner on the 30th or a long lunch on the 31st.

Use public transport. Many cities run extra services on the night, while taxis and ride-hailing apps charge surge prices after midnight.

Travel on the cheaper days. Flights on 31 December and 1 January are often cheaper than those on the days around them.

Check the hotel rules. Look for minimum stays and compulsory gala dinners before you book, especially at resorts.

Safety and practical tips

New Year crowds attract pickpockets in every big city. Carry only what you need, keep your phone in a front pocket and agree on a meeting point with your group. In cold cities, dress in layers, as you will spend hours outside. Check the local rules on fireworks and alcohol in public places, which differ between countries, and check the latest travel advice from your government before you book, especially for destinations outside Europe.
