New Year 2027 in Macau: Countdown and Fireworks Guide

Macau splits its New Year's Eve between two very different parties. On the Macau peninsula the government's Cultural Affairs Bureau stages a free countdown concert at Sai Van Lake Square, beneath Macau Tower, with Cantonese pop stars on stage. Across the water on the Cotai Strip, Sands China runs a ticket-free countdown at The Parisian Macao, where the replica Eiffel Tower lights up and an eight-minute, 360-degree fireworks display is launched from The Venetian, The Parisian and The Londoner at midnight. The government concerts have recently run without fireworks, so if seeing fireworks matters to you, Cotai is the place.

Macau is small (you can cross it by bus in under an hour), which makes it easy to dine in one district and count down in another. This guide explains each countdown venue, how the traffic closures work, what the night costs, and how to get there from Hong Kong or mainland China. Macau also has its own fireworks season in autumn and big Lunar New Year celebrations a few weeks later, which are separate events. If you are building a wider Greater Bay Area trip, see our guide to New Year's Eve in Shenzhen, which sits just across the border.

The countdown venues in Macau compared

Three events define the night. Times below are from the celebration that rang in 2026; organisers usually announce the 2026 to 2027 programme in mid to late December through the Macao Government Information Bureau, the Macao Government Tourism Office and the resort operators.

Sai Van Lake Square: the official Macau countdown concert

The Cultural Affairs Bureau's countdown concert is the city's official celebration. For the turn to 2026 it ran from 22:00 to 00:10, free of charge, and closed with Hong Kong singer Panther Chan and the rock band Dear Jane; local media expected around 10,000 spectators at the previous year's edition. The square lies on the lakeside between the Nam Van and Sai Van lakes, with Macau Tower lit up behind the stage.

Security checks are carried out at the entrances and there is no bag storage on site, so travel light. Recent editions have not included fireworks, which surprises visitors who remember the earlier shows over the water by the tower. For a dinner first, Macau Tower's restaurants and the Portuguese and Macanese places around Avenida da Praia Grande are within walking distance. Come here for Cantopop and a crowd of Macau residents.

Taipa Houses: a countdown in the old village

On Avenida da Praia, the old Taipa waterfront, stand the Taipa Houses: five early 20th-century Macanese villas, now a museum and a popular photo spot. The government's Taipa Countdown Show is held here, also free, and finishes just after midnight; check the official notice for the start time. It is a more relaxed alternative to Sai Van Lake, and a short walk from the restaurants of Rua do Cunha in Taipa Village, which makes for an easy dinner-and-countdown evening. The Cotai resorts are close by, so on a clear night the midnight fireworks there light up the sky beyond the villas. Families and couples like it most.

The Parisian and the Cotai Strip: fireworks at midnight

Sands China describes its New Year's Eve Countdown Extravaganza as the only outdoor countdown event on the Cotai Strip. For the turn to 2026 the music started at 21:30 at Le Jardin, the garden in front of The Parisian Macao, with live bands and a DJ. At 23:55 the half-scale Eiffel Tower ran a sound and light countdown, and at midnight an eight-minute, 360-degree fireworks display was fired from several Sands properties, including The Venetian, The Parisian and The Londoner.

Traffic is the catch. Road access on the Cotai Strip was limited from 22:00, and the roads were closed from 23:00 to 01:00, with changes to hotel shuttle buses and parking. Arrive by 22:00 and plan to walk afterwards. Staying at one of the Cotai resorts removes the problem, and their restaurants run New Year's Eve set menus, often with views of the display. Senado Square and the historic centre: lights and screens

The wave-patterned Portuguese paving of Senado Square, the Ruins of St Paul's and the streets between them belong to the Historic Centre of Macao, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Through December the square is decorated for Christmas, and in past years giant screens here broadcast the countdown concert. It is the best place for an evening walk on 30 or 31 December before deciding where to spend midnight, and the side streets are full of almond-cookie shops and egg-tart bakeries. It costs nothing, and the Ruins of St Paul's photograph best after dark.

What New Year's Eve in Macau costs

The government countdown events are free: the Sai Van Lake concert and the Taipa Houses party need no ticket. Costs in Macau come almost entirely from rooms and dinner, and resort rates for 31 December are among the highest of the year. Prices for the 2026 night were not published as of October 2026.

Pay in Hong Kong dollars or patacas. Resorts often quote package prices in patacas, which are worth slightly less than HKD at the pegged rate.

Small costs add up on the night. The peg is fixed at HK$1 to MOP 1.03, and many shops simply take Hong Kong dollars one to one, so paying in patacas is usually slightly cheaper. A public bus costs MOP 6 with no change given, and taxis start at MOP 21 for the first 1.6 km, plus MOP 2 for every further 220 m, MOP 3 per bag in the boot and MOP 8 extra when boarding at the airport, Taipa Ferry Terminal or the bridge port. The bridge shuttle bus to Hong Kong costs MOP or HK$65 until 23:59 and 70 from midnight to 05:59.

Where to stay in Macau for New Year's Eve

Pick your countdown first, then the hotel, because getting between the peninsula and Cotai near midnight is slow.

Peninsula hotels are generally better value than the big Cotai resorts, which set minimum stays over the holiday. If you stay in Cotai but want the Sai Van concert, plan to stay on the peninsula until the buses and LRT thin out.

The Light Rail has made splitting the night easier. Since Barra station opened in December 2023, the Taipa line runs from the southern tip of the peninsula, near A-Ma Temple, across the bridge to Taipa, the Cotai resorts and Taipa Ferry Terminal, and single fares run from MOP 6 to 12 depending on the number of stations. A hotel near a Light Rail stop on either side cuts the post-midnight trip to minutes, as long as you board before the last trains leave.

Getting home after midnight in Macau

Macau extends public transport for the countdown. For the night welcoming 2026, 21 daytime bus routes ran until 1 am or 2 am on 1 January, some night routes ran more often, and the last Light Rail trains left at 2 am. Roads around Sai Van Lake close for the concert. The Transport Bureau publishes the arrangements for the coming New Year in late December.

Casino resorts also extended their free shuttles to the border gates and ferry terminals last year. If you are returning to Hong Kong the same night, the bridge shuttle bus runs around the clock, but queues build after midnight.

If the buses are full, taxis are the fallback, but expect long queues at the resort ranks and around Sai Van Lake after the countdown, and remember the MOP 5 surcharge on rides to Coloane. Senado Square, Nam Van and Sai Van Lake sit close together on the peninsula and are walkable; between the peninsula and Taipa or Cotai, plan on the bus, the Light Rail or a taxi.

Getting to Macau for New Year's Eve

Macau International Airport has regional flights, but most long-haul travellers fly into Hong Kong International Airport. From there the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge shuttle bus leaves from the Hong Kong Port next to the airport and runs around the clock, with a crossing of roughly 45 minutes to an hour. High-speed ferries also run from Hong Kong to the Outer Harbour and Taipa terminals in about an hour. On 31 December both are busy, so cross earlier in the day. Compare routes into Hong Kong or Macau on our flight search.

Macau has its own immigration system, separate from mainland China and Hong Kong, and many nationalities can visit without a visa for a set number of days; the rules depend on your passport, so check the Macao Public Security Police Force before you travel. The currency is the pataca (MOP), pegged to the Hong Kong dollar at about HK$1 to MOP 1.03. Hong Kong dollars are widely accepted in shops, taxis and casinos, though change often comes back in patacas, which are hard to use outside Macau.

Read this before the countdown: Taxis are very hard to find between 23:00 and 02:00. Pick one midnight location, arrive early, and walk or use the casino shuttle buses after their services resume. Do not try to move between the peninsula and Cotai in the last hour before midnight.

Hotel prices for 31 December rise sharply, and many resorts set minimum stays over the holiday. Book well ahead, and read cancellation terms.

Tips for New Year in Macau

  • Choose fireworks or concert. Recently the fireworks have been in Cotai and the government concerts have had none. Decide which matters more before you book your hotel's location.
  • Eat Macanese. Book a New Year's Eve dinner of Macanese dishes such as minchi or African chicken, and pick up Portuguese-style egg tarts for midnight.
  • Use the free resort shuttles. Casino resorts run free shuttles to the ferry terminals, border gates and the bridge port. Timetables change on 31 December, so check at the hotel desk.
  • Carry Hong Kong dollars. HKD works almost everywhere. Spend your patacas before leaving, since few places outside Macau take them.
  • Keep coins for the bus. Bus fares are MOP 6 and drivers give no change. A Macau Pass stored-value card works on buses and the Light Rail and saves fumbling for coins in the post-midnight crush.
  • Book the ride back early. If you fly out of Hong Kong on 1 January, cross the bridge before midnight: the shuttle bus fare rises from 65 to 70 after 00:00, and queues at the port are longest just after the countdown. Children under 12 and over-65s pay the half-price concession fare.
