What to expect

Oman Air is the national airline of the Sultanate of Oman, based at Muscat International Airport (MCT) in Seeb and a member of the oneworld alliance since June 2025. It flies to 43 destinations in 25 countries across the Middle East, Asia, Europe and Africa, and suits travellers who want a full-service airline with a connection in Muscat.

Roots in Oman Aviation Services

Oman Air grew out of Oman Aviation Services, which became a joint-stock company in 1981 and bought 13 aircraft from Gulf Air that year. Scheduled flying as Oman Air began in March 1993 with a route from Muscat to Salalah, and the airline joined IATA in October 1998.

Leaving Gulf Air and going long-haul

Oman was a co-owner of Gulf Air until May 2007, when it withdrew to build up its own carrier. In March 2007 the government raised its stake in Oman Air from about a third to 80 percent, and by November 2010 it owned 99.8 percent. Long-haul flights started in November 2007, with Bangkok and London as the first routes. The chairman today is Saeed Bin Hamoud Al-Mawali and the chief executive is Nasser Al-Sharji.

A smaller, leaner airline

Oman Air has shrunk its plans since 2021. In February 2021 it cut its planned fleet from 50 to 36 aircraft because of COVID-19 and dropped unprofitable routes such as Athens and Casablanca. A restructuring programme from August 2023 focused on finances and governance, and in early 2024 the airline retired its ten Airbus A330s and ended four routes.

Some cities have returned. Singapore came back on 2 July 2026 after nine years, flown four times a week with a Boeing 737 MAX.

Where does Oman Air fly?

As of August 2026 Oman Air serves 43 destinations in 25 countries. India is its largest market, with six cities, and the network also covers the Gulf, East Africa, Southeast Asia and major European cities. About 21 airlines codeshare with Oman Air, including Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa and Qantas.

What does joining oneworld mean?

Oman Air became a full oneworld member on 30 June 2025 after several delays. Members of programmes such as British Airways Executive Club or Qatar Airways Privilege Club can earn and spend on Oman Air flights, and oneworld status holders get alliance benefits such as lounge access on eligible trips.

No fatal accidents

Oman Air has never had a fatal crash.
