Opatija travel guide
Habsburg villas, the Lungomare and seafood in Volosko
Opatija is a 19th-century resort on the Kvarner Gulf, with grand hotels, villa gardens and a 12 km seafront path. May, June and September bring swimming weather without the peak crowds. Two or three days is right, easily paired with Rijeka. Prices are high, and Schengen rules let many nationalities stay 90 days.
On the Kvarner shore 13 km west of Rijeka, Opatija is where the Austro-Hungarian court and nobility came to winter in the late 19th century. The grand hotels and villas they built still line the main road in subtropical gardens, and the town keeps a slightly formal, old-resort air that sets it apart from the party towns of Dalmatia.
It began with a merchant's holiday house. Iginio Scarpa of Rijeka built Villa Angiolina in 1844 and named it after his wife; it now holds the Croatian Museum of Tourism, and its park of exotic trees is the best place to start a walk. The town's name means abbey, after the old abbey of St James, whose church still stands by the sea.
The Lungomare is the reason to stay. This seafront path, named after Emperor Franz Joseph, runs about 12 km to Lovran past the villages of Ika and Ičići, and continues east to the fishing harbour of Volosko. Near the centre, on a rock just offshore, stands the Maiden with the Seagull, a 1956 statue that has become the town's emblem. Walk one way and take bus 32 back.
Swimming is from rocks, pebbles and concrete platforms, not sand. Slatina, the main town beach below the old Bellevue hotel, sits right by the bus station, so it fills up first. Lido is the other popular choice, and quieter spots open up along the Lungomare toward Ičići.
Behind the town rises Učka, a nature park with hiking and mountain-bike trails. Walking up from the coast is a hard day, but you can drive to Vojak, the summit, for a view across the whole gulf to the islands. In the evening, eat seafood in Volosko. Two or three days suits most people.

Villa Angiolina's gardens to Volosko along the Lungomare
Spend an Opatija day on foot. Start in the exotic-tree park of Villa Angiolina and the Croatian Museum of Tourism inside it, walk past the Fountain of Helios and Selene to Slatina square for coffee, then follow the Lungomare seafront path east to the fishing harbour of Volosko for lunch.
Volosko is about half an hour east on foot. Return along the shore in the late afternoon, stop at the Maiden with the Seagull, and swim from the rocks near Lido before dinner.
On day two, walk the other way, west through Ika and Ičići toward Lovran, swimming from the ledges as you go, and ride bus 32 home. Lovran's small walled core is worth half an hour before you catch the bus. With a car, drive up to Vojak on Učka in the late afternoon for the view across the gulf to Krk and Cres, and come back down for a last dinner in central Opatija.
Kvarner scampi in Volosko, spring asparagus and Lovran chestnuts
Opatija eats from the Kvarner Bay and the slopes of Učka. The best fish cooking is in Volosko, where konobas face the harbour; order Kvarner scampi grilled or buzara style with wine, garlic and breadcrumbs. Wild asparagus comes in spring, and Lovran's chestnuts are the autumn treat.
Ask for whatever white fish came in that morning, sold by weight.
In spring, wild asparagus picked on the lower slopes turns up in fritaja, an omelette that is the regional way to eat it. Lovran, at the far end of the Lungomare, is proud of its cherries in early summer and of its sweet chestnuts, the marun, in autumn, when the Marunada festival brings roasted chestnuts and chestnut cakes to the villages above Lovran in October.
Hotel terraces on the main road serve Viennese-style cakes and coffee. It is a quiet town after dark, so for bars and late nights go into Rijeka, 20 minutes away on bus 32.
Walking to Lovran, then Mošćenička Draga, Kastav and Učka
The easiest outing from Opatija is the full Lungomare to Lovran, about 12 km, with swims at Ika and Ičići and bus 32 back. Beyond it lie Mošćenička Draga's long pebble beach below the hill village of Mošćenice, the hilltop town of Kastav, and the summit of Učka for views over the Kvarner Bay.
Učka nature park covers the mountain behind the town. Fit walkers can climb from the coast, which takes most of a day, while drivers can reach Vojak, the summit, where a stone lookout tower gives a view over the Kvarner islands and Istria.
Rijeka is the obvious half day, 20 minutes away, with Trsat Castle, the Korzo and the central market. Kastav, a small walled hilltop town above Rijeka, makes a quieter stop by car.
