Osaka travel guide
Street food, neon canals and a castle in Japan's kitchen.
Osaka is Japan's food capital, known for takoyaki and okonomiyaki in Dōtonbori, Osaka Castle, Universal Studios Japan and a lively nightlife. It is a handy base for Kyoto, Nara and Kobe. Visit in spring or autumn and allow 2 to 3 days. Prices are moderate to high, and many nationalities need no visa for Japan.
Osaka, Japan's third-largest city, is known as 'the nation's kitchen' and famed for its street food and friendly, outgoing people. The neon canal district of Dōtonbori, the food market of Kuromon, Osaka Castle and the retro Shinsekai district are the classic sights, while Universal Studios Japan draws families.
Osaka is an excellent base for the Kansai region: Kyoto, Nara and Kobe are all under an hour away by train, and Kansai International Airport has flights across Asia and beyond. The city hosted Expo 2025 on Yumeshima island.

Visas and entry
Visa exemption for many
Kansai International is the usual entry point for Osaka. Many passport holders are visa-free for up to 90 days; others need a visa, which some can obtain online as an eVISA. Check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs list, and make sure your passport covers your whole stay.
- Passport validity
- Valid for your whole stay
- Arrival forms
- Visit Japan Web for immigration and customs
Getting there
Kansai or Itami
Fly into Kansai International (KIX) for international flights or Itami (ITM) for most domestic ones. From KIX, the Nankai Rapi:t or JR Haruka takes 35 to 50 minutes into the city. Shinkansen trains stop at Shin-Osaka, about 2.5 hours from Tokyo, and long-distance ferries sail to Okinawa, Kyushu and Busan.
- From KIX
- Nankai Rapi:t or JR Haruka, about 35–50 minutes
- From Tokyo
- About 2.5 hours by shinkansen
Money and costs
Cash still matters
Osaka is easy on cards: ICOCA and other IC cards and contactless bank cards work at Osaka Metro gates, and most shops accept them. Takoyaki carts, small bars and Shinsekai kushikatsu counters can be cash-only, so carry some yen. The Enjoy Eco Card gives a day of unlimited subway and bus rides.
- 7-Eleven and Japan Post ATMs accept foreign cards.
- Tipping is not done and can cause confusion.
- Some cities, including Kyoto and Tokyo, charge an accommodation tax.
Health and vaccines
Excellent healthcare
Osaka's August highs average 33.7°C, with nights near 26°C, so plan long walks for spring or autumn and drink water when heatstroke alerts are issued in summer. Tap water is safe. Healthcare is excellent but costly, so carry travel insurance.
- Heatstroke alerts
- Issued in summer; drink water and rest in the shade
Staying safe
Very low crime
Osaka is safe by world standards. Typhoons can arrive from the south in September and early October and may disrupt Kansai airport trains, and earthquakes are a national risk, so learn the basics. Police are on 110, fire and ambulance on 119.

Where to stay
Best areas
Stay in Namba near Dōtonbori for food, nightlife and shopping, in Umeda for the main station hub, or in Shin-Osaka for early shinkansen trips. The Midōsuji line links Umeda and Namba in minutes, so either works for day trips to Kyoto, Nara and Kobe.
- Namba / Dōtonbori
- Food, nightlife and shopping
- Umeda
- Major station hub and skyscrapers
- Shin-Osaka
- Convenient for shinkansen trips
Getting around
Metro and JR
Use an IC card or a contactless bank card on the Osaka Metro, Japan's second-largest subway network, and on JR lines. The red Midōsuji line runs through Shin-Osaka, Umeda, Shinsaibashi, Namba and Tennōji, and the JR Loop Line passes Osaka Castle. Kyoto is 15 to 30 minutes away by train and Nara about 45.
- Kyoto
- About 15–30 minutes by train
- Nara
- About 45 minutes by train
- From Kansai International, Nankai's Rapi:t goes to Namba and JR's Haruka to Tennōji and Shin-Osaka, both in 35 to 50 minutes.
- Itami handles most domestic flights but has no rail link; take a limousine bus, or the monorail to Hotarugaike and the Hankyu line.
- Shinkansen stop at Shin-Osaka, about 2.5 hours from Tokyo.
- The Loop Line has spurs to Namba and Universal Studios.
- Hankyu runs from Umeda to Kyoto and to Kobe (about 30 minutes to Sannomiya), Kintetsu to Nara, and Keihan along the river to Kyoto's east side.
- For Himeji without the shinkansen, the JR special rapid takes 57 minutes from Osaka Station.
- Bikes share the flat pavements, so walk to one side.
SIM and internet
eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi
Buy a data-only SIM, eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi router at Kansai Airport or online before reaching Osaka; voice SIMs are hard to find for short stays. Docomo, au, SoftBank and Rakuten all cover the city and day trips to Kyoto and Nara.

- Docomo, au, SoftBank, Rakuten
Culture and etiquette
Etiquette matters
Osaka people are chattier than Tokyoites, but some rules flip: stand on the right on escalators, and in Shinsekai dip kushikatsu in the shared sauce pot only once. Remove shoes on tatami, carry your rubbish home and never tip.
- Remove shoes where indoor slippers are provided
- Queue in lines marked on train platforms
- Carry your rubbish home; public bins are rare
- Talking on the phone on trains
- Eating while walking in busy areas
- Tipping

Osaka weather by month
Osaka's August highs reach about 34°C, and June is the wettest month at around 185 mm. January nights fall to roughly 3°C.
Climate figures are approximate long-term averages for Osaka (Japan Meteorological Agency 1991–2020 normals, via Wikipedia).
Kita and Minami, two days in Osaka and a base for Kansai
Spend two full days on Osaka and use it as a base for Kansai. The city has two poles joined by the Midōsuji subway line: Kita around Umeda and Osaka Station, and Minami around Namba, where the city eats. Stay in Namba for food or in Umeda or Shin-Osaka for early trains to Kyoto, Hiroshima and Tokyo.
- Day one: Osaka Castle and its park in the morning, with the Osaka Museum of History next door for the backstory, since the castle tower is a modern concrete rebuild. Lunch at Kuromon Market, then spend the evening on Dōtonbori's canal under the neon.
- Day two: Shitennō-ji, among the oldest Buddhist temples in the country, then the retro streets of Shinsekai below Tsūtenkaku tower for kushikatsu. Alternatively give the day to Universal Studios Japan, and book timed entry or express passes for the popular areas in advance.
- Kansai side trips: Kyoto is 15 to 30 minutes away by train and Nara about 45. Kobe's Sannomiya is around 20 minutes on JR. Himeji's white castle is about 30 minutes by shinkansen from Shin-Osaka, then a 15-minute walk up from the station.
Keep half a day for the bay. The Kaiyukan aquarium, with a whale shark among its residents, sits beside the Tempozan Ferris wheel, and a ferry crosses the water towards Universal Studios. Compare hotels in Namba and Umeda.
Driving in town is a poor idea because streets lack names and parking costs a fortune; rent a car only for the countryside. Long-distance ferries sail from the port to Okinawa as well as to Kyushu and Busan.
Mild winters, the June rainy season and Osaka's hot Augusts
Visit Osaka in spring or in October and November. Winters are mild, with January highs near 9.7°C, while the rainy season runs from about 7 June to 21 July and August highs average 33.7°C.
The rainy season starts on average around 7 June and ends around 21 July. Then the heat peaks, with nights near 26°C. September and early October bring a second wet spell, when typhoons can arrive from the south.
Spring is the favourite season. Blossom fills the grounds of Osaka Castle in late March and early April, and the avenue of cherry trees by the Japan Mint is one of the city's best-loved flower walks. The spring sumo tournament is usually held in mid-March at the Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium. October and November are the calmer alternative, with highs dropping from 24°C to 18°C and far less rain.
The summer highlight is the Tenjin Matsuri on 24 and 25 July, run by Osaka Tenmangū shrine. On the second day about 100 groups join a procession of boats on the river, and fireworks begin at around 19:30, lasting roughly 90 minutes. Universal Studios Japan is at its most crowded at weekends and in school holidays, so aim for a weekday.
Takoyaki, okonomiyaki and kuidaore in Dōtonbori's lanes
Eat your way through Osaka, whose motto is kuidaore, eat yourself into ruin. Dōtonbori and the lanes of Hōzenji-yokochō and Sōemon-chō are almost all restaurants; buy takoyaki from the street carts that appear at nightfall and okonomiyaki in small hole-in-the-wall shops.
Shinsekai is the place for kushikatsu: skewered meat and vegetables, battered, deep-fried and dipped in a runny black sauce. Look between Dōbutsuen-mae and Ebisuchō stations. The sauce pot is shared: dip once, never after biting. Order doteyaki on the side: beef tendon stewed in miso until it falls apart. Kuromon Market near Nippombashi sells seafood and snacks to eat at the stalls. For a train picnic, buy battera (mackerel pressed onto rice in a wooden box) from a department store or station kiosk.
Osaka also claims kappō cooking, where you sit at a counter while the chef prepares a run of raw and cooked dishes in front of you. For drinking, Dōtonbori is the centre of the action, while Kitashinchi, south of Osaka Station, is where companies entertain clients in small, expensive bars.
People here are louder, chattier and quicker with a joke than in the capital, and the dialect is famous across Japan for its comedians. The old merchant greeting mōkarimakka means roughly "making any money".
