Okinawa
Okinawa travel guide
Subtropical islands, coral reefs and Ryukyu culture.
Okinawa, Japan's subtropical island prefecture, offers beaches, coral reefs, diving, Ryukyu culture at Shuri Castle and the Churaumi Aquarium. It is warm year-round. Visit from April to June or October to November to avoid the peak typhoon months, and allow 4 to 7 days. Costs are moderate to high, and short stays are visa-free for about 70 countries.
Okinawa is Japan's southernmost prefecture, a chain of subtropical islands between the East China Sea and the Pacific. Once the independent Ryukyu Kingdom, it has its own culture, cuisine and language, and the Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu, including Shuri Castle in Naha, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visitors come for coral reefs, white-sand beaches, diving and snorkelling, the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, and outer islands such as the Kerama Islands, Miyako and Ishigaki. Okinawa also has moving Second World War memorials, including the Peace Memorial Park in Itoman.

Visas and entry
Visa exemption for many
Okinawa follows Japan's national entry rules. Many passport holders can stay visa-free for up to 90 days; others need a visa, sometimes as an eVISA. Check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs list before booking, and keep your passport valid for the whole stay.

Getting there
Naha Airport
Fly into Naha Airport (OKA), which has frequent flights from Tokyo, Osaka and other Japanese cities plus some international routes. The Yui Rail monorail reaches central Naha in about 15 minutes. Miyako and Ishigaki are separate flights away, and fast ferries from Naha reach the Kerama Islands in 35 to 60 minutes.
- Yui Rail monorail
- Airport to central Naha in about 15 minutes
- Outer islands
- Flights to Miyako and Ishigaki; ferries to the Kerama Islands
- The Yui Rail monorail runs on through Shuri to Urasoe: 19 stations, 37 minutes end to end.
- JTA and RAC fly from Naha to Miyako, Ishigaki and smaller islands.
- A slow ferry from Kagoshima takes 25 hours via Amami and Yoron.
Money and costs
Cash still matters
Cards work at Okinawa's hotels and rental-car desks, but market stalls and the cook-your-fish restaurants upstairs at Makishi market often want cash, so carry yen. 7-Eleven and Japan Post ATMs accept foreign cards, and tipping is not expected anywhere.
- 7-Eleven and Japan Post ATMs accept foreign cards.
- Tipping is not done and can cause confusion.
- Some cities, including Kyoto and Tokyo, charge an accommodation tax.
Health and vaccines
Excellent healthcare
Okinawa's sea brings its own risk: jellyfish appear in summer, so swim at beaches with nets, and many unguarded beaches close from November to April. The sun is strong; drink water when heatstroke alerts are issued. Tap water is safe, and insurance is wise.
- Heatstroke alerts
- Issued in summer; drink water and rest in the shade
Staying safe
Very low crime
Crime is low in Okinawa, but typhoons matter more than on the mainland: August and September are the peak months, and a direct hit can stop flights and ferries for days, so keep a buffer day before flying home. Dial 110 for police, 119 for fire or ambulance.

Where to stay
Best areas
Combine city and beach: Naha for Kokusai-dōri, the markets and Shuri Castle; the Onna coast for beach resorts and diving; Motobu for the Churaumi Aquarium; and the Kerama Islands for clear water, as a day trip or a stay. Book early for Golden Week at the start of May.

- Beach resorts and diving
- Motobu
- Near the Churaumi Aquarium
- Kerama Islands

Getting around
Rent a car
Rent a car outside Naha, booking early. Traffic keeps left, and many visitors need an International Driving Permit of the 1949 Geneva type obtained before arrival. The Yui Rail monorail is the only rail line, and buses are sparse, sometimes two hours apart. Leave time for traffic on the way back to the airport.
- Driving
- Left-hand traffic
- Drivers from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Slovenia, Monaco or Taiwan can use a JAF licence translation from Urasoe.
- The Okinawa Expressway covers 57 km from Naha to Nago; Route 58 follows the west coast for 120 km.
- On buses, take a numbered ticket as you board and pay at the front with exact change.
SIM and internet
eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi
With a rental car and scattered islands, you will want data in Okinawa: buy a data-only SIM, eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi router at Naha Airport or online. Voice SIMs are hard to get for short stays. Docomo, au, SoftBank and Rakuten operate here.
- Networks

Culture and etiquette
Etiquette matters
Okinawa's pace is slower and dress more casual than the mainland's, and the kariyushi shirt passes even at formal events. Treat war memorials as you would a grave, remove shoes on tatami and never tip. Nifēdēbiru means thank you in Okinawan.
- Remove shoes where indoor slippers are provided
- Queue in lines marked on train platforms
- Carry your rubbish home; public bins are rare
- Talking on the phone on trains
- Eating while walking in busy areas
- Tipping
Things to know before visiting Okinawa
What makes Okinawa worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.

- Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, with whale sharks.
- Kerama Islands for snorkelling and diving.
- Beaches on Okinawa Island and the outer islands.
- Okinawan food: goya champuru, Okinawa soba, Orion beer.

Trip fit

Naha weather by month
Naha never gets cold: January lows stay near 15°C. June is the wettest month at about 284 mm, and July highs reach around 32°C.
Climate figures are approximate long-term averages for Naha (Japan Meteorological Agency 1991–2020 normals, via Wikipedia).
Okinawa Island plus one smaller island group on a first trip
This is a prefecture of 160 islands, 49 of them inhabited, scattered across about 1,000 km of ocean between Kyushu and Taiwan. A first trip usually stays on Okinawa Island and adds one smaller island group. Allow four days at the least; a week lets you add a second group of islands without spending every day in transit.
- Naha and the south (two days): Shuri Castle was the Ryukyu royal palace; its main hall burned in 2019 and the rebuilt Seiden reopens on 23 November 2026, at first by advance reservation only. Then Kokusai-dōri, Makishi market and the pottery workshops of Tsuboya. The south of the island holds the war sites, including the Peace Memorial Park in Itoman and the Himeyuri Monument.
- Central coast and Motobu (two or three days): the castle ruins of Nakagusuku and Katsuren, part of the same World Heritage listing as Shuri. Continue up the resort coast at Onna to the Motobu peninsula, where the Churaumi Aquarium keeps whale sharks and manta rays in its huge Kuroshio Sea tank. Yanbaru, the forested far north, is the emptiest part of the island.
- Kerama Islands (a day or more): fast ferries from Naha reach Tokashiki in 35 minutes and Zamami in about an hour, for clear water and snorkelling straight off the beach.
- Miyako and Yaeyama: separate flights away. From Ishigaki, boats run to the preserved Ryukyuan village of Taketomi and to Iriomote, an island almost entirely covered in jungle.
Book a rental car early for the main island, since the north is hard work without one.
Direct flights from Tokyo and Osaka also reach Miyako and Ishigaki.
Mild winters, whale watching and beach closures in Okinawa
Even in January the temperature seldom falls below 15°C. The islands are quiet. Whale-watching boats run from January to March. The sea is too cool for many swimmers, and many public beaches without lifeguards close between November and April, but sightseeing and hiking are pleasant.
April is the sweet spot, before the rain. The rainy season comes earlier than on the mainland, in May and June.
High summer is hot and humid, with highs around 32°C from July into September and the sea at its warmest. It is also typhoon season. Storms are most likely in August and September, and the risk stretches from July into October. A direct hit can ground flights and stop ferries for several days, which matters far more on a small island than in a city.
October and November bring the second good window, with a warm sea. Naha's Great Tug-of-War takes place in October: a rope weighing more than 40 tonnes, pulled by crowds from a festival that draws some 275,000 people. Eisa drumming and dancing fill the streets around Obon in late summer.
Gōyā chanpurū, Okinawa soba and the islands' pork-rich cooking
Eat gōyā chanpurū, the bitter melon stir-fry with pork and island tofu, and Okinawa soba, thick wheat noodles in pork broth topped with stewed rib. Okinawan food owes more to trade with China than to mainland Japan, and pork turns up everywhere, from braised rafutē belly to mimigā ear in vinegar. Markets sell sātāandagī doughnuts.
Makishi market in central Naha is the best introduction. Pick your fish on the ground floor and carry it up a level, where restaurants cook it for a small fee. Try umibudō, sea grapes that pop like caviar, with a little vinegar. On the table you will often see kōrēgusu, chillies steeped in rice spirit; a few drops are plenty.
The drink is awamori, distilled from Thai rice and usually 30 to 40% alcohol, drunk on the rocks. Bottles aged three years or more are sold as kūsu. Orion is the island beer, and jasmine tea (sanpincha) is the everyday soft drink. Naha has the liveliest nightlife; Chatan and Kadena, beside the US air base, run bars with live music.
The patterned kariyushi shirt is acceptable even at formal events, and nifēdēbiru is Okinawan for thank you.
