In short

The Grande Plage of Saint-Jean-de-Luz is a calm Basque family beach in a bay closed by three sea walls, a few steps from the old town. It is free and always open, with lifeguards on May weekends and daily from June to mid-September from 11 AM. Plan half a day, longer with Ciboure or Socoa.

The Grande Plage is the main sandy beach of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a Basque fishing town in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques close to the Spanish border. It curves along a bay shielded by three sea walls, so the water stays calm, and it suits families and less confident swimmers who want a town-centre beach on a coast better known for surf.

Three breakwaters that tame the bay

Three breakwaters close the bay: Sainte-Barbe to the north, Socoa to the south and the Artha in the middle. Work began on the initiative of Napoleon III and ended in the late 19th century. Before then, big storms regularly flooded the town. Today the walls break the Atlantic swell, and the water inside is much quieter than on the open beaches of the Basque coast.

Louis XIV's wedding in Saint-Jean-Baptiste

Louis XIV married Maria Theresa of Spain in the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste on 9 June 1660, after the Treaty of the Pyrenees. The bishop of Bayonne led the ceremony. The Infanta stayed in the Maison de l'Infante, built around 1640 by a wealthy shipowner, while the king lodged in the Maison Louis XIV. The church is about 400 m from the beach and the Maison de l'Infante about 500 m, so both fit easily into a morning on the sand.

Ravel's Ciboure and the walk to Fort de Socoa

Across the Nivelle river, about 1 km away, lies Ciboure, where the composer Maurice Ravel was born. The Fort de Socoa guards the western side of the bay, about 3 km from the Grande Plage, and the walk round the bay to it gives good views back over the town.
