Shoreline walk
Set off from the Route de Tahiti car park in the morning cool and follow the water's edge south past the other sectors of the bay.
Plage de Tahiti is the northern sector of Pampelonne in Ramatuelle, a short drive south of Saint-Tropez, named after the Route de Tahiti and the beach club that opened there in 1946. Free public sand lies between the clubs and stays open at all hours, and the nearest first-aid post is Les Tamaris in high summer. Plan half a day to a full day.
Plage de Tahiti is the northern sector of Pampelonne beach in Ramatuelle, Var, a short drive south of Saint-Tropez. It suits visitors who want beach clubs and long walks on fine sand, with free public sections between the clubs. Pampelonne covers some 27 hectares, and its sectors are named after their access roads, from Tahiti in the north to Bonne Terrasse in the south.
The sector holds several beach concessions, including the Tahiti beach club itself. According to the Ramatuelle tourist office, the club opened in 1946 using bamboo décor left behind by the Victorine film studios after a shoot in 1935. Public sections of sand lie between the private clubs. A Conseil d'État ruling of 13 November 2002 recognised the beach and its dunes as a remarkable natural area, and a layout plan approved in 2015 redrew the concessions and moved buildings back behind rebuilt dunes.
Pampelonne was one of the beaches of the Allied landing in Provence on 15 August 1944, and a stone on the Boulevard Patch, named after the American general who led the operation, records it. After the war the beach became famous through And God Created Woman, directed by Roger Vadim and filmed partly here in 1956 with Brigitte Bardot. Le Gendarme de Saint-Tropez used the beach in 1964.
The tourist office suggests an easy, flat 5 km walk of about an hour and a half along the water's edge, starting from the Route de Tahiti car park. Early morning is the most comfortable time in summer.
