What to expect

SalamAir is the low-cost airline of Oman, based at Muscat International Airport (MCT) with a focus city at Salalah (SLL). It flies Airbus A320neo and A321neo jets across the Gulf and to South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Africa, the Caucasus and parts of Europe. It suits price-conscious travellers who are happy to pay only for the bags and extras they use.

How SalamAir began

Oman's government ran a tender in January 2016 to set up a budget airline, and it was won by the Muscat National Development and Infrastructure Company (ASAAS), backed by the Oman Investment Authority, Muscat Municipality and several pension funds. SalamAir's first aircraft landed in Muscat on 18 November 2016, Oman's National Day, and the first commercial flight, Muscat to Salalah, followed on 30 January 2017.

The airline began with three Airbus A320-200s leased from LATAM. Its first international route, Muscat to Dubai, opened on 28 February 2017, initially to Dubai World Central before moving to Dubai International in October 2017. The airline code is OV and the call sign is MAZOON.

Who owns SalamAir now?

On 26 March 2026 the Government of Oman took a 90 percent stake in SalamAir, placing it alongside the flag carrier Oman Air in a more joined-up national aviation sector. The two airlines already codeshare. The chief executive since October 2026 is Yaqoob Al Kiyumi, who followed Adrian Hamilton-Manns.

Where does SalamAir fly?

SalamAir flies to about 40 destinations, with most routes starting in Muscat. The network reaches Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Kenya, Egypt and Turkey, plus Albania and Austria in Europe. Baku and Trabzon are seasonal summer routes.

The airline adjusts its network often. Chennai, Delhi, Munich and Kuwait City are among the routes it has dropped, so check salamair.com before planning around a city you flew to before.

Muscat and Salalah

Muscat International Airport is the hub and the place to connect between SalamAir routes, for example from Pakistan to East Africa. Salalah, in southern Oman, is the focus city and the first destination SalamAir ever served. If you book two separate SalamAir tickets to connect in Muscat, leave a generous gap between them.

Oman Air codeshare

SalamAir is not in a global alliance. Its codeshare partner is Oman Air, which links the low-cost network to the national carrier's long-haul flights.

The passenger fleet is all Airbus neo: six A320neos with 180 seats and nine A321neos with 230 seats in August 2025, according to Wikipedia. Ten more A320neos are on order. An order for six Embraer E195-E2 jets, which would have brought 135-seat aircraft to thinner routes, has been deferred. SalamAir Cargo also holds an A321 freighter converted from a passenger jet, listed as inactive.

Cabin bag only

SalamAir sells fares in bundles, and each bundle carries its own baggage rules. Extras such as a cabin bag, priority boarding and fast track can be added on their own. Bags not included in your fare are cheaper to add online before you reach the airport.

The airline also runs mOVemore, a subscription listed on its website, aimed at people who fly the same routes often.

Pro tip: Compare bundles before you pay, since a bundle with a checked bag usually costs less than adding the bag later. Use online check-in to save time at Muscat airport,.
