What to expect

Shanghai Airlines is a Chinese airline headquartered in Changning, Shanghai, and a wholly owned subsidiary of China Eastern Airlines, with hubs at Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA) and Shanghai Pudong (PVG). It flies a large domestic network and routes across East and Southeast Asia under its own FM code, and suits travellers starting or ending a trip in Shanghai.

China's first locally funded airline

Shanghai Airlines was founded on 30 December 1985 with money from the Shanghai municipal government and local Shanghai companies, making it China's first commercial airline of this kind. It flew only domestic routes at first and began international services in 1997. The company listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in late 2002, and set up a cargo arm in 2006.

Star Alliance, then China Eastern

Shanghai Airlines joined Star Alliance on 12 December 2007 as its 19th member. Two years later, on 11 June 2009, a merger with China Eastern Airlines was announced. It completed in February 2010, the shares were delisted and Shanghai Airlines became a wholly owned subsidiary. It left Star Alliance on 1 November 2010 and is now a SkyTeam affiliate through its parent.

The head office moved from Jing'an District to Changning, where it shares premises at Hongqiao Airport with China Eastern. The cargo business, Shanghai Airlines Cargo, has been folded into China Cargo Airlines.

Where does Shanghai Airlines fly?

Most routes connect Shanghai with cities across China. Abroad, the airline concentrates on Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. It also flies some long routes on behalf of China Eastern, including Melbourne and Casablanca.

Two Shanghai airports

Shanghai Airlines flies from both of the city's major airports, Hongqiao and Pudong, which are far apart, so the airport on your ticket matters for transfers and ground transport.
