Thai AirAsia X is the long-haul, low-cost sister of Thai AirAsia. It flies wide-body Airbus A330s from Bangkok's Don Mueang International Airport on routes of roughly four to eight hours, where a single-aisle A320 would be too small or would not have the range.
Japan is the core of the network: Tokyo Narita, Osaka Kansai, Nagoya and Sapporo all have Thai AirAsia X flights from Don Mueang. The airline also flies to Delhi, Almaty in Kazakhstan and Riyadh, with Shanghai Pudong and seasonal Harbin flights listed for China.
Because the A330 has two aisles and more room for cargo, the airline sells a Premium Flatbed seat at the front: a seat that reclines into a flat bed, with priority check-in and a larger baggage allowance. The rest of the cabin is standard economy, with meals, bags and seat choice sold as extras.
The company was formed on 18 September 2013, when AirAsia X signed a shareholders' agreement with Thai investors Tassapon Bijleveld and Julpas Krueospon. Thailand's Department of Civil Aviation issued the air operator's certificate on 3 February 2014, and the first flight, Bangkok to Seoul on an Airbus A330-300, followed on 17 June 2014. Osaka and Tokyo services started on 1 September 2014. AirAsia holds 49% and Thai shareholders led by Tassapon Bijleveld hold 51%. The ICAO code is TAX and the call sign is EXPRESS WING.
Thai AirAsia X has tried a wide range of long routes. Tehran and Muscat ended in December 2016, and Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Tbilisi, Zagreb, Fukuoka, Sendai and several Chinese cities have also left the map. Sydney was suspended in early 2025 and Seoul Incheon passed to Thai AirAsia in February 2026. On the other side, Almaty and Riyadh were added from December 2025, and Harbin runs seasonally.
The pandemic hit the airline hard. In April 2022 it had moved its Bangkok flights to Suvarnabhumi, and in July 2024 it announced a return to Don Mueang from 1 October 2024, where all its flights now operate.
