Udon Thani's airport has two terminals on the south-western edge of the city, 10 to 20 minutes from town. A shared minibus drops you at your hotel for about ฿80, and minibuses also meet most flights for Nong Khai and the Laos border, about ฿150 to ฿200 and an hour away. Wi-Fi is free; the terminal closes overnight.

Udon Thani is a short, simple airport with one job for many visitors: getting them to Udon city, Nong Khai or the Laos border quickly. This guide covers the terminal, the transport counters and the few services worth knowing about.
Please note: Flights, hotels near the airport and car hire with driver on this page can be booked directly on bookingMentor. We list places on merit, and bookings never affect what we say about them.
Udon Thani International Airport (UTH) sits about 3 km south-west of central Udon Thani in north-eastern Thailand, some 450 km from Bangkok. It is the busiest airport in the upper north-east, with several airlines flying to Bangkok and other Thai cities. It suits business travellers, visitors to the 2026–27 Horticultural Expo, and anyone flying in to cross the Mekong to Vientiane in Laos, about an hour's drive to the border.
The airfield opened in 1932. During the Vietnam War, as Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, it was a front-line base for the United States Air Force and the Asian headquarters of Air America. The Royal Thai Air Force still owns it: Wing 23 of the 2nd Air Division is based here, and its 231 Squadron flies Alpha Jets bought second-hand from the German Air Force and delivered in 2001, after earlier years on F-5s. The Department of Airports runs the civil side and counts Udon among its most profitable airports.
Udon Thani in late 2026: the Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo runs from 1 November 2026 to 14 March 2027, and daily shuttle buses are planned between the airport and the Expo sites. Terminal B has been fitted with customs, immigration and quarantine facilities while the Department of Airports seeks full international designation, and a third terminal is planned for completion by 2028. Expect busier check-in halls on Expo weekends.
On 8 February 2006 a team of skydivers from 31 countries built a 400-way freefall formation over the airport, a world record at the time.
The single asphalt runway, 12/30, is 3,048 m long and 45 m wide. The airfield sits 176 m above sea level and has Category 8 fire cover. The aerodrome's published hours are 06:00 to 22:00 local time, and the terminal follows the flight schedule, so it is not a place to spend the night. Customs and immigration are available on request.
Udon handled 2,012,155 passengers in 2025, up 6.96 percent, on 13,737 aircraft movements, with 475 tonnes of freight. That is close to its 2015 level of 2.2 million and three times the 677,411 passengers of 2006.
In 2018 Udon Thani was named, with Chumphon, Sakon Nakhon and Tak, among the regional airports to be expanded and handed to Airports of Thailand. A transfer was scheduled for 2023, but the aeronautical publication still lists the Department of Airports as operator. Terminal B has been fitted with customs, immigration and quarantine facilities while the department seeks full international designation, and a third terminal is planned for completion by 2028.
Almost every flight is domestic. Thai AirAsia flies to Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Mai and Phuket. Nok Air serves Don Mueang and Chiang Mai, Thai Lion Air flies to Don Mueang, Hat Yai and U-Tapao, and Thai Airways and Thai Vietjet fly to Suvarnabhumi. Thai Vietjet reported a weekly Saturday flight from Wuxi in China in 2026, and its SkyConX product lets you check bags through to Tokyo, Osaka, Taipei and Da Nang via Suvarnabhumi.
Passenger facilities are spread across two connected buildings, and the layout is compact and easy to read. Expect coffee shops, a buffet restaurant on the first floor, souvenir stalls, ATMs, free WiFi and car hire desks. Landside has the most food; airside is mainly snacks and coffee. The Coral Executive Lounge airside takes walk-in payment and lounge-programme members, and booking at least an hour ahead is advised. A post office and tourist information desk operate at the airport. The Udon Airport Hotel, about 500 m from the terminal, suits very early departures.
The Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo runs from 1 November 2026 to 14 March 2027, with daily shuttle buses planned between the airport and the Expo sites. Expect busier check-in halls on Expo weekends and arrive at least 90 minutes before departure.
Landside at Udon Thani means the check-in halls, arrivals area, transport counters, shops and the first-floor buffet. Airside is the gate area beyond security, where the Coral Executive Lounge is. On a domestic flight you can usually leave and re-enter through security, but the choice airside is small, so eat first.

Bottled water is sold in the convenience store and cafés. Do not drink the tap water in Thailand; buy a sealed bottle landside, where it is cheaper.
There are no public showers in the terminal. Lounge showers are not advertised, so ask the lounge before you buy a pass.
Charging stations sit in the seating areas. Thailand uses types A, B, C, F and O sockets at 220 V, and most two-pin European and flat-pin US plugs fit.
Free WiFi covers the terminal. A SIM counter is not guaranteed, so if you need a Thai SIM, buy one at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang before your flight, or at a phone shop in Central Plaza Udon.
Choice is limited but enough for a wait. Landside has the most options; airside is mainly snacks and coffee.
What you will actually find in the terminal. Try "car", "cash" or "Nong Khai".
Nothing matches that search. Try "sim", "wifi", "bag" or "food".
The aerodrome's published operating hours are 06:00 to 22:00 local time, and the terminal follows the flight schedule. Shops and counters open around the first departures and close after the last arrival.
Udon Thani is small enough that every step takes minutes, not hours. Here is the order of things.
Domestic flights park close to the terminal. There is no immigration on a domestic arrival, so head straight to the belts.
Belts are a few steps from the gate area. Bags from a single flight usually arrive within 15 minutes.
The minibus counter for town is to the right as you leave, and the Nong Khai and Friendship Bridge counter is straight ahead. Buy your ticket before you go outside.
Pre-booked drivers wait in the arrivals hall. Avis, Hertz and Sixt desks are inside the terminal, with free parking outside.
That is ample on a normal day. Give yourself two hours on holiday weekends and during the Horticultural Expo.
Find your airline on the screens. Thai Vietjet SkyConX passengers can check bags through to Japan, Taipei or Da Nang via Suvarnabhumi here.
The buffet restaurant on the first floor and the coffee shops landside offer more choice than the gate area.
Security is quick outside peak waves. The Coral Executive Lounge is near Gates 4 and 5 in Terminal 2 if you want a quieter seat.
The airport is on the south-western edge of Udon Thani, so every option into town is short and cheap. For Nong Khai and Laos, the minibus counter in arrivals is the simplest start. A shared minibus, sometimes signed as a limousine, drops each passenger at their address for about ฿80; buy the ticket at the booth to the right of the arrivals exit. Grab works in Udon, with a car to the centre about ฿150 in 2024, and Grab Bike costs around ฿60 for one rider with little luggage. Taxis charge flat fares of ฿200 to ฿400; agree the price before loading bags. Avis, Hertz and Sixt have desks inside, and you need an International Driving Permit with a foreign licence. A car with a driver booked on bookingMentor suits a day trip to the Red Lotus Sea at Kumphawapi, the Ban Chiang heritage site or Nong Khai. Many travellers land here for Laos, since it puts Vientiane within reach on a domestic Thai fare. A van counter straight ahead in arrivals sells seats to Nong Khai hotels or the Thai side of the Friendship Bridge for about ฿150 to ฿200, a ride of about an hour. From the bridge a shuttle bus crosses into Laos, and a taxi, tuk-tuk or Bus 14 covers the 25 km to Vientiane. Lao visas on arrival are issued at the bridge for many nationalities; check the rules for your passport.
Pre-book a car with driver on bookingMentor. Useful for the Red Lotus Sea at Kumphawapi, the Ban Chiang heritage site or a day trip to Nong Khai, where public transport is patchy.

Grab works in Udon Thani, and a car to the centre cost about ฿150 in 2024. Grab Bike is cheaper but takes one passenger and little luggage.
Taxis wait in front of the terminal and can be booked at the desks inside. Drivers usually quote a flat price rather than use a meter, so agree it before loading bags.
International rental firms have desks in the terminal. Thai roads in the North-East are straightforward, but you need an International Driving Permit alongside your licence.

Not directly. Take the airport minibus to the Friendship Bridge, clear Thai exit formalities, then ride the bridge shuttle bus into Laos and a taxi, tuk-tuk or Bus 14 the last 25 km to Vientiane. Direct Udon–Vientiane buses leave from the city bus station, not the airport.
