Academy Awards (Oscars) guide
The 99th Academy Awards take place at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday 14 March 2027. The ceremony is invitation-only, so visitors plan around what is open: the transformed boulevard, the Academy Museum, watch parties across Los Angeles and, if the Academy runs one, an online drawing for bleacher seats.
The Academy Awards are the film industry's highest honours, voted on by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and presented each year at the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. The 99th ceremony is set for Sunday 14 March 2027, broadcast live on ABC.
It is worth being clear from the start: the ceremony itself is invitation-only. Nominees, presenters, Academy members and their guests fill the theatre, and no tickets are sold to the public. Hollywood Boulevard outside the theatre is closed and fenced off for days beforehand while the red carpet and its marquee go up.
What a visitor can do is be in Hollywood during Oscars week, see the build-up on the boulevard, visit the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, and watch the show at one of the many viewing parties across Los Angeles. A small number of fans have in past years sat in red-carpet bleachers, allocated in advance by the Academy.

Red-carpet coverage through the afternoon, the live show from 4pm local time.
Because the ceremony is closed, plan the trip around what is open. Arrive a few days early to see the boulevard transformed, book the Academy Museum for a weekday, and settle on a watch party for Sunday afternoon. Hotels in Hollywood itself sit inside the closure zone and fill with media crews, so West Hollywood or Downtown can be easier bases.
If you hope for a bleacher seat, watch the Academy's website from the new year; any drawing has historically run online for a short window, with applications only accepted there. Our Los Angeles page covers the rest of the city.
The first Academy Awards were presented at a private dinner at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in May 1929, honouring films of 1927 and 1928. Radio broadcasts followed in the 1930s and television in 1953, turning an industry dinner into an international event.
The ceremony moved between several Los Angeles venues before settling at the Kodak Theatre, now the Dolby Theatre, which opened in 2001 and was designed with the Oscars in mind. The 99th ceremony in 2027 continues that run, with the 100th following in 2028.
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the main gateway, around an hour's drive from Hollywood in normal traffic.
The B Line stops at Hollywood/Highland, beside the theatre, and is the simplest way through Oscars-week closures.
The museum is at Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, reached by bus or a short ride from Hollywood.
Hollywood hotels near the theatre are inside the closure area and busy with broadcast crews, so book early or stay a little further out.
West Hollywood, Mid-Wilshire near the Academy Museum and Downtown are practical bases, with Metro or a short drive to Hollywood.
Los Angeles in March is mild and mostly dry. Downtown 1991-2020 normals give an average high of 21.1°C and a low of 11.3°C, with about 57 mm of rain over roughly five days.
Afternoons are pleasant in the sun; evenings cool off, and the occasional late-season storm can bring a wet day.
Met at arrivals at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and driven door to door to Dolby Theatre.

Booking
No. There is no public sale. Seats inside the Dolby Theatre go to nominees, presenters, Academy members and invited guests. Any website offering ceremony tickets for sale should be treated as a scam.
Timing & weather
Sunday 14 March 2027. The Academy announced the date in April 2026, together with Sunday 5 March 2028 for the 100th ceremony.
Nominations for the 99th Academy Awards are due on Thursday 21 January 2027, with final voting by members running from 25 February to 4 March 2027.
General
In past years the Academy has allocated a few hundred bleacher seats along the carpet through an online drawing, with winners security-vetted in advance; reports from 2012 put it at about 700 seats against as many as 20,000 applicants. Seats have not been given out to people queuing on the day. Whether and how a drawing runs for 2027 is up to the Academy, so check oscars.org closer to the date.
Not in any useful way. The block around the theatre is closed and screened off well before the day, and arrivals take place inside a secured perimeter. You will see road closures, satellite trucks and security, not the stars.
The broadcast goes out live at 7pm Eastern time, which is 4pm in Los Angeles. Red-carpet coverage begins earlier in the afternoon.
Many bars, cinemas and hotels around the city hold watch parties on the night, some free and some ticketed. Look for listings a few weeks ahead and book anything with food included, as these fill up.
Not indefinitely. The 99th and 100th ceremonies are at the Dolby Theatre and on ABC. Reports say the ceremony moves to the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles for the 101st edition in 2029, the same year it moves to YouTube.
The theatre is a working venue inside the Ovation Hollywood complex and has run guided tours on non-event days. Tours stop around the ceremony while the building is prepared, so plan a visit outside Oscars week.
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on Wilshire Boulevard, run by the Academy itself, displays Oscar statuettes as part of its galleries on the history of filmmaking. It is the nearest most visitors will get to the awards.
Check the Academy's own announcements. Reports in 2026 disagreed on whether a host for the 99th ceremony had been confirmed, so we have not named one here.
