Agra travel guide

The Taj Mahal and the Mughal capital on the Yamuna.

In short

Agra is home to the Taj Mahal, the Mughal Agra Fort and nearby Fatehpur Sikri, all UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Visit from October to March, see the Taj at sunrise (it is closed on Fridays), and allow 1 to 2 days on the Golden Triangle. Agra is very good value, and India's e-Visa is applied for online.

Agra, on the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh, was a capital of the Mughal Empire and is home to the Taj Mahal, the white-marble mausoleum built by Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal and one of the most famous buildings in the world. With Agra Fort and the nearby abandoned Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri, it has three UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Visas and entry

e-Visa for most visitors

Agra has no international airport, so most visitors enter India through Delhi on an e-Visa. Apply on the official indianvisaonline.gov.in portal for a tourist, business or medical e-Visa, valid at designated airports and seaports. Your passport needs six months' validity and two blank pages.

Many unofficial sites imitate the Indian e-Visa portal and charge extra; use only the government site.

Why a night in Agra beats a day trip, and the Yamuna-side sights

Stay a night in Agra and see the Taj Mahal at sunrise, which a same-day return from Delhi rules out. The main sights line the Yamuna: the Taj and Agra Fort are about 30 minutes apart on foot, Mehtab Bagh faces the Taj across the river, and Itimad-ud-Daulah and Akbar's tomb at Sikandra complete the Mughal set.

  • One day: the Taj at first light, entering by the quieter East Gate; Agra Fort late morning; Itimad-ud-Daulah after lunch; Mehtab Bagh for the view back across the water at dusk.
  • Two days: add Fatehpur Sikri (about 40 km out) and Sikandra. Alternatively, stop at Fatehpur Sikri on the road to Jaipur, roughly 255 km and 4 hours away.
  • Three days: add the Krishna towns of Mathura and Vrindavan, about 50 km away, or the bird sanctuary at Bharatpur, about 56 km.

Plan the calendar first. The Taj is closed every Friday, so never schedule your one Agra day then. Night viewings take place on the full-moon night and the two nights either side; tickets are sold only online through the Archaeological Survey of India, in 30-minute slots for 50 people, so book as soon as you know your dates. A Taj ticket is valid for 3 hours, enough for an unhurried visit.

For Mathura, Bharatpur or Jaipur, a car with driver lets you combine stops.

The loo wind, record heat and Agra's mid-October to March season

Visit Agra between mid-October and March. From April to June the loo, a hot dry wind from the west, can cause fatal heatstroke, and the city hit a record 48.6 °C on 28 May 2024, so see the monuments at dawn. Winter mornings are cold, and dense fog can hide the Taj at sunrise.

The monsoon usually arrives in the first week of July and fades by mid-September. It is lighter than in many parts of India, crowds thin out, and the air is at its cleanest of the year because the rain and winds wash out the smog.

The weather settles by the middle of October, and that is when the main season begins. Mornings in late December and January can be bitterly cold, occasionally approaching freezing, and dense fog can hide the Taj at dawn. Fog also slows every train: in late December and early January even the fast morning service from Delhi may arrive well after 10AM, so allow a buffer. Air quality is at its worst in winter and in the crop-burning season from September to November; carry a mask and eye drops.

Bedai breakfasts and the Braj and Mughlai kitchen of Agra

Agra belongs to the Braj region and shares its kitchen with Mathura and Vrindavan, with a strong Mughlai streak on top. Breakfast is bedai, a puffy fried kachori with a spicy filling, served with potato curry and curd and followed by hot jalebi. Tandoori chai, finished in a clay cup, is the local way to drink tea.

The city's famous sweet is petha, translucent candied ash gourd. The best shops cluster at Hari Parwat near Agra Fort; Panchi's and the Pracheen Petha store are the best known. Buy the plain ivory kind or the yellow angoori pieces soaked in syrup. Dalmoth (fried spiced lentils with nuts and raisins) is the other edible souvenir. Chaat is everywhere: bhalla (curd-topped potato tikki) at Sadar Bazaar and Belanganj, and mangores near Double Phatak by Sikandra. Finish an evening with a pair of paan, a joda.

Nightlife is almost non-existent beyond hotel cultural shows.

Shopping needs a thick skin. Marble inlay boxes and leather goods are the local crafts, but anyone who leads you to a shop collects a commission (often around 50%) and opening prices can be absurd. Carry anything you buy yourself; shops that promise to post goods are known for bait-and-switch.
