In short

Bashundhara City on Panthapath in central Dhaka opened in 2004 as a shopping mall and office tower with space for over 2,000 shops, a cinema, a food court and an indoor theme park. Entry is free, though many shops close one day a week. Allow two to four hours.

Bashundhara City stands on Panthapath, close to Karwan Bazar in central Dhaka. It opened to the public in 2004 and is one of the busiest shopping centres in the country, with up to 50,000 visitors a day.

Built for the Bashundhara Group and hit by fire in 2009

Construction began in 1998 under Shafiat Sobhan, vice-chairman of the Bashundhara Group, and the building cost more than 57 million US dollars. It was designed by architects Mustapha Khalid Palash and Mohammad Foyez Ullah of Vistaara. On 13 March 2009 a fire broke out on the upper office floors, killing four people. The mall reopened three days later, on 16 March.

Mall podium with space for 2,325 shops

The 19-storey complex holds the mall on its lower podium floors and the corporate offices of the Bashundhara Group above. The mall covers about 111,480 square metres and has space for 2,325 shops and cafes, selling clothing, electronics, jewellery, mobile phones and household goods. It is the second largest mall in Bangladesh after Jamuna Future Park.

Leisure facilities include a Star Cineplex cinema, a food court on the top level, a gym with a swimming pool and Toggi World, an indoor play and theme park for children.
