The Teacher-Student Centre, or TSC, is Dhaka University's social and cultural hub in Shahbagh, a 1961 modernist building by Constantinos Doxiadis with a small Greek memorial nearby. Visiting is free. Thirty to sixty minutes is enough to see the building and campus life.
The Teacher-Student Centre, known as TSC, is the University of Dhaka's social and cultural centre in Shahbagh, Dhaka, Bangladesh, opened in 1961. Its modernist main building by Constantinos Doxiadis houses student clubs, rehearsal rooms and a busy courtyard, and it suits visitors interested in architecture, campus life and the city's student politics.
The university's Division of Public Affairs set up the centre, and construction was completed in 1961 with money from the Government of Pakistan and the Ford Foundation. Part of the site once belonged to the old Sujatpur Palace, the oldest Nawab mansion in Shahbagh. TSC hosted many political meetings during the Bangladesh Liberation War.
The Greek architect Constantinos Doxiadis designed the main building around a courtyard. A raised double butterfly roof over the front block helps keep the interior cool, and extensions in the 1980s added north-south cross-ventilation. A sculpture by Hamiduzzaman Khan stands at the entrance.
Inside are dining rooms, meeting rooms, libraries, art and music rooms, stages, a multipurpose hall, games rooms, a film lab and rehearsal rooms. The Dhaka University Publication Centre and a Janata Bank branch also operate from the building.
TSC is home to Badhan, the student-run voluntary blood donation group, and to the debating, film, quiz, tourist and photographic societies, the chess club, the Model United Nations association, the Rover Scouts and many cultural groups. Students organised food and saline for flood victims here in 1987 and after Cyclone Sidr in 2007.
Across the lawn to the east stands a small Greek memorial from 1915, a square Doric-style structure with Greek inscriptions and the only surviving trace of the Greek community that lived in Bengal in the 19th century. Two small Shiva temples sit inside the old swimming pool enclosure; the pool is no longer used.
The grounds are open to the public and free. Access to rooms inside depends on university events and rules.
