Balaleet
Sweet saffron vermicelli with omelette
Classic Qatari food in a restored Al Khulaifi family house near the eastern end of Doha's Corniche, open from 07:00 to midnight and listed in the MICHELIN Guide. Majboos is the favourite, and families and groups use it for traditional breakfasts and private rooms.
Bayt Sharq serves classic Qatari food in a restored Al Khulaifi family house, around 100 years old, in Al Doha Gardens on Al Sharq Street, just off the eastern end of Doha's Corniche. Listed in the MICHELIN Guide Doha and open from 07:00 to midnight, it suits families, groups and anyone wanting a traditional Qatari breakfast or dinner.
The house is laid out around a leafy courtyard. Guests can eat in the main dining room inside the restored building, on the veranda, in the open-air courtyard or in private cabanas. A small museum inside shows objects from traditional Qatari life. The National Museum of Qatar is close by, so the two make an easy pairing, and taxis know the address.
The menu sticks to dishes families in Qatar still cook at home. Majboos (machboos), spiced rice with meat, chicken or fish, is the centrepiece. Mutabbel and other cold mezze start the meal, and saffron mahalabia, a delicate milk pudding, ends it. For breakfast, balaleet (sweet vermicelli with egg) and lamb liver are the dishes to try. Land and Sea set menus suit larger groups. No alcohol is served.
Prices are in Michelin's lowest band for Doha, which makes this one of the better-value sit-down meals in the city.
Leave a few minutes to look around the house museum before you sit down.
