Dahl Al Misfir is a large limestone cave near Rawdat Rashid in central Qatar, about 40 km southwest of Doha, known for gypsum crystals that glow faintly in torchlight. It is free and open to the public. One to two hours is enough; bring a torch and sturdy shoes.
Dahl Al Misfir is a natural cavern in the flat desert of central Qatar, near Rawdat Rashid and about 40 kilometres south-west of Doha. In Arabic, dahl means a cave or sinkhole, and Misfir is often explained as glowing, a reference to the crystals inside.
The cave formed when rainwater slowly dissolved layers of gypsum and limestone under the desert surface, creating a collapse hole that leads down into a wider chamber. It is one of the largest and best known of the few caves in Qatar, and it is often listed among the country's natural landmarks.
The entrance is a wide opening in the ground. The opening measures about 12 by 4.5 metres. A steep, rocky slope leads down into the main chamber, which is cooler than the surface; estimates of the depth range from about 40 metres to at least 100 metres. The walls and floor contain gypsum and fibrous crystals that reflect light, so they seem to shine when a torch is pointed at them. The air can be stale and humid deep inside, and the ground is loose in places.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change reopened the cave in November 2022 after the first full geological survey, carried out with Qatar Museums and ExxonMobil Research Qatar. The site is now fenced, with safer access paths, protective barriers, shaded rest areas and a signboard with a cave map you can open by QR code. There is no ticket office or lighting. Most people come with a four-wheel-drive vehicle or a guided desert tour, often combined with Rawdat Rashid and other inland sights.
Entry is free. Visitors should bring a strong torch, gloves and sturdy shoes, go with at least one other person and avoid the hottest months. Climbing in and out can be hard for children and people with limited mobility.
The glow comes from fibrous gypsum crystals that derive from the Lower Dammam and Rus rock formations. The exact age of the cave is unknown, but analysis of its sediments shows it is younger than the surrounding Eocene limestone, which is estimated at 40 to 50 million years old.
The site is busiest on national holidays and cool weekends, when families drive out from Doha. Go on a weekday morning between November and March for the most comfortable conditions, and keep to the marked paths and barriers, as the slope is loose. Tell someone your plans before heading out into the desert.
