What to expect

Delta Air Lines is a major US airline headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, and a founding member of the SkyTeam alliance. It suits travellers flying within the United States and those connecting from US cities to Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East through one of its nine hubs. It traces its start to 2 March 1925, when it was founded as the crop-dusting company Huff Daland Dusters, and it began passenger flights on 17 June 1929.

Nine hubs, Atlanta first

Atlanta is the largest hub by passengers and departures. The others are Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York JFK, New York LaGuardia, Salt Lake City and Seattle/Tacoma, with focus cities at Austin and Raleigh/Durham. Delta serves about 325 destinations in more than 50 countries.

Detroit and Minneapolis/St. Paul joined Delta's network through the Northwest Airlines merger.

Endeavor, Republic and SkyWest regional flights

Shorter routes are flown under the Delta Connection brand by Endeavor Air, which Delta owns, and by Republic Airways and SkyWest Airlines. Your booking shows the operating carrier under each flight number.

Partners and stakes

Delta holds shares in several partners: 49 percent of Virgin Atlantic, 20 percent of Aeroméxico, 10 percent of LATAM, 12.7 percent of WestJet and smaller stakes in Air France-KLM and China Eastern. These ties give one-ticket connections across many markets.

The Northwest merger

Delta announced the purchase of Northwest Airlines on 14 April 2008, completed it on 29 October 2008 and finished integration on 31 January 2010. Ed Bastian is chief executive, and the airline employed about 103,000 people in 2025, when revenue reached 63.4 billion US dollars.

SkyMiles

Delta’s loyalty programme. Join SkyMiles online before you fly so the trip counts.

SkyMiles members earn miles on Delta and SkyTeam flights and with partners, and redeem them for award flights and upgrades. Medallion status adds upgrades and priority services.

The loyalty programme is SkyMiles, and miles do not expire. Members can use free Wi-Fi on most domestic flights. Delta Sky Club lounges are open to members who pay with money or miles, top-tier Medallion members and holders of certain American Express cards. Single-day passes ended in January 2019.

Baggage allowance

Delta does not give every passenger the same allowance: the route, the cabin and the fare you buy each change it. Your DL e-ticket shows what you have.

Expect the allowance on Delta to change with distance and cabin: higher cabins include more than basic economy on the same flight. Look up your route on the baggage page of delta.com.

Pro tip: weigh your bags at home before leaving for the airport; extra weight on Delta usually costs more at the counter than when you add it online.
