Jizan travel guide
Red Sea port, Turks' Castle and the ferry to Farasan
Jizan is a Red Sea port in Saudi Arabia's southwest corner, used mostly as the base for the Farasan Islands ferry and trips to the coffee mountains around Fayfa. Go from November to February. Allow two or three days including a night on Farasan. Prices are high, and the tourist eVisa is available to many nationalities.
Jizan is the capital of Jazan Province, a hot stretch of Red Sea shore in the far southwest of Saudi Arabia, near the Yemeni border. Few people come for the city itself. They come because its port runs the ferry to the Farasan Islands, and because the green, terraced mountains of the province start a short drive inland.
Before the boat, climb to Dosariya Castle, the hilltop fort locals call the Turks' Castle, for a look over the rooftops and the sea. The Heritage Village is a short stop. At dusk, families gather on the North Corniche, which is also where most of the better hotels sit.
Farming shapes the table here: mangoes, papayas and figs from the coastal plain, and coffee grown on the slopes around Fayfa. Visit between November and February. The rest of the year is heavy and humid, and even winter afternoons are warm enough to keep you near the shade.

Getting there
Domestic flights, the coast road and the port
Everyone flying in uses King Abdullah Airport (GIZ), close to the city. Saudia and the budget carriers fly in from Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam, and a few international routes reach Cairo and Dubai, so most visitors from further afield change planes in Jeddah or Riyadh. From the terminal, a taxi or an Uber or Careem car reaches the North Corniche hotels in a short ride; there is no airport bus worth waiting for. Overland, the coastal highway runs north to Jeddah, a long day behind the wheel, and SAPTCO coaches cover the same route for those without a car. Roads also climb inland to Abha and the Asir highlands. The city's port is the other gateway that matters to visitors: it is where the ferry to the Farasan Islands sails from, and the boat carries cars as well as foot passengers.

Where to stay
Sadafa seafront, the mall strip or a night on Farasan
Stay on the North Corniche around Sadafa Roundabout, where Jazan Inn stands, for the evening promenade, the sea breeze and the shortest run to an early Farasan ferry. Al Riyadh Road has the international chains, such as the Courtyard beside Rashid Mall, but no sea and little to walk to. If the trip is mainly about the reefs, sleep on Farasan and treat the city as a transit stop.

Getting around
Apps around the port, a driver for the Fayfa bends
Inside Jizan, ride-hailing apps and taxis cover everything a visitor needs: hotel to Dosariya Castle, the Heritage Village, Rashid Mall and the port, each a short trip. Walking is realistic only along the North Corniche, and only from late afternoon in the cool months. The province is another matter. For Fayfa and the coffee villages, rent a car or hire a driver for the whole day, because no scheduled service climbs there and the mountain road is steep, narrow and slow, with tight bends near the top. Drivers used to the route are worth the extra cost. For Farasan, reach the port well before departure; on the islands, a car brought over on the ferry or a local taxi is the way to reach the beaches.

Know before you go
What makes Jizan worth the trip, and what catches visitors out.
Why travelers love it
- The Farasan ferry, out to coral reefs, empty beaches and quiet island villages.
- Dosariya Castle on its hill, with the city and the sea spread out below.
- Fresh Jazan mangoes and local coffee, grown on the plain and the Fayfa slopes nearby.
Good to know
- Book the ferry before you fly in, especially for a Thursday or Friday crossing.
- Humidity is the real issue, more than the temperature; carry water and plan sightseeing for early morning or dusk.

Weather in Jizan, month by month
Jizan stays hot all year: even January averages 31°C by day and 22°C at night, and May peaks at 38°C. August brings the most rain, around 32 mm.
Climate figures are approximate long-term averages for Jazan (World Meteorological Organization, via Wikipedia).
Dosariya at sundown, a Farasan night and the Fayfa climb
Three days fit Jizan: Dosariya Castle and the North Corniche on arrival, a night on the Farasan Islands for reefs and village life, then the climb to the terraced coffee farms of Fayfa. Come between November and February, when highs drop to 31 to 34C, and confirm ferry seats the night before.
Land at King Abdullah Airport and spend the first afternoon in town. Climb to Dosariya Castle once the sun is lower for the view over the harbour, look into the Heritage Village, then walk the North Corniche as the families arrive with their picnic mats. Make sure your Farasan ferry seats are confirmed before you go to bed.
Take an early crossing on day two and sleep on the islands, which are about reefs, beaches and slow village life. Snorkel in the morning, rest at midday, and drive the quiet island roads in the late afternoon.
Return on the morning boat on day three and hire a car or driver for the climb to Fayfa, where coffee is grown on narrow terraces cut into the mountainside. Leave plenty of time for the road; it is steep and winding, and you will want to be back on the plain before dark.
Mangoes, fish and mountain coffee
Eat mangoes, fish and Khawlani coffee in Jizan. Coastal-plain mangoes sell at roadside stalls in season, the day's catch is grilled near the port, stone-pot maghash is the regional speciality, and the terraces of Fayfa grow the coffee that draws visitors up the mountain.
Jazan Province is one of the country's main fruit gardens. Mangoes from the coastal plain are the local pride, sold at roadside stalls and markets in season, along with papayas, figs and bananas.
The coast means fish. Order the day's catch grilled or fried in the simple seafood restaurants near the port and the corniche, served with rice and flatbread. On Farasan, fish is the main meal almost by default.
For something specific to the region, look for maghash, meat or fish cooked in a heavy stone pot, a dish people here link with Jazan more than anywhere else. Up in the mountains around Fayfa, the farms grow Khawlani coffee, and a cup made from beans grown on the terrace you are standing beside is the reason many visitors make the drive. Coffee here is often lightly roasted and spiced, closer to Yemeni tradition than to an espresso bar.
