Sandbar islands and shallow turquoise water on the Red Sea

In short

Umluj is a quiet Red Sea town between Yanbu and Al Wajh, the launch point for boat trips to dozens of sandy islands. Go between October and April and allow two or three days, with a spare one for wind. Costs are high, and many nationalities get the eVisa online.

Umluj is a small town on the Red Sea coast of Tabuk Province, between Yanbu and Al Wajh. Its draw lies offshore: dozens of low sandy islands scattered across shallow turquoise water, which is why Saudis sometimes call it the Maldives of Saudi Arabia.

Getting there

YNB, EJH or RSI, then Highway 5 north or south

Umluj has no airport of its own, so getting here takes two steps: a flight to a nearby airport and a drive along the coast. Yanbu (YNB), to the south, has the widest choice of domestic flights. Al Wajh (EJH), to the north, is smaller. Red Sea International (RSI), built for the Red Sea Global resorts on the coast between the two, is the newest option. All three connect with Umluj by Highway 5, the coastal road that runs down the whole western seaboard. There is no railway, and buses are not a practical way in for most visitors, so collect a hire car at whichever airport you land.

Yanbu (YNB)
South of Umluj, the busiest nearby airport; drive north on Highway 5
Al Wajh (EJH)
Smaller airport to the north
Red Sea International (RSI)
Opened in 2023 for the Red Sea Global coast; flights from Riyadh, Jeddah, Dubai and Doha
By road
Highway 5 along the Red Sea from Yanbu or Al Wajh

At the arrival airport
  • Fill up before leaving Yanbu or Al Wajh; long stretches of the coast road have few towns.
  • Book a hire car ahead for Saudi school holidays, when beach towns fill with families.

Weather in Umluj, month by month

Month-by-month climate figures for Umluj are being researched.

Corniche arrival, sandbar day, spare wind day

Plan three days for Umluj: arrive and book a boat on the first, spend the second swimming and snorkelling around the offshore sandbar islands, and keep the third spare in case wind stops the boats. On boat day leave early, bring your own shade and be back by mid-afternoon.

Spend the first day arriving. The drive up Highway 5 from Yanbu, or down from Al Wajh, takes up much of it, so check in, then walk the corniche at sunset as the town comes out for the evening air. Then agree a boat at the harbour for the morning.

Day two is the boat day. Most trips stop at two or three of the low sandbar islands for swimming, snorkelling in the clear water and a picnic on the sand.

If the wind stopped the boats on day two, this is your spare. If not, take the car along the coast to a quiet beach, swim and snorkel off the shore, then drive back towards your departure airport.

Fish, rice and picnics on the sand

Umluj eats fish, bought fresh and grilled or fried, with rice, salad and flatbread, in small local places in town and along the corniche. Hamour, the Gulf and Red Sea grouper, is the classic order. Island days need your own food and plenty of water, because nothing is sold offshore.

Look also for sayadiyah, the Red Sea fisherman's dish of fish cooked over rice browned with onions and spices.

Pack sandwiches, fruit and dates for the boat. In the evening, the cafes on the waterfront serve tea, coffee and juices. Alcohol is banned throughout the country.

Umluj on a Red Sea road trip

Come to Umluj between October and April, when a long day on bare sand is comfortable, and give it two or three nights on a Highway 5 road trip along the north-west coast, keeping one free in case the boats cannot go out. From June to September heat and humidity make the shadeless islands hard work.

Inland, AlUla tempts anyone adding heritage sites, but distances here are long, so plan driving days around fuel stops.

Season matters more than route. From May the heat builds; in high summer, be on the water at first light and back by late morning.
