Kathmandu travel guide
Durbar squares, great stupas and the gateway to the Himalaya.
Kathmandu, Nepal's capital, fills a high valley ringed by hills, and seven groups of its temples, palaces and stupas form a single UNESCO World Heritage Site. Come for Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, Pashupatinath and side trips to Patan and Bhaktapur. October to November and March to April are clearest; allow three to four days. Costs are very low, and visas of 15, 30 or 90 days are issued on arrival.
Kathmandu is the capital and largest city of Nepal, set in a bowl-shaped valley at about 1,400 m in the foothills of the Himalaya. The city grew from medieval Newar kingdoms and became the capital of a unified Nepal after the Gorkha conquest of 1768.
Visitors come for the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage Site, whose seven monument zones include Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath, and for the neighbouring royal cities of Patan and Bhaktapur. Kathmandu is also the starting point for most treks and mountain flights in Nepal.

Getting there
Tribhuvan International
Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) lies just east of central Kathmandu, about 3 km from Pashupatinath. It is Nepal's main international gateway and also handles domestic flights to Pokhara and the mountain airstrips. Taxis and hotel pick-ups run to Thamel in under an hour, depending on traffic.

Money and costs
Rupees and cash
Nepal uses the Nepalese rupee. Hotels, trekking agencies and larger Thamel restaurants take cards, often with a surcharge, but taxis, temple entry fees, small cafés and mountain lodges want cash. ATMs are plentiful in Thamel and Durbar Marg; withdraw enough before heading to the hills, where machines are scarce.
- Carry rupees for heritage-site entry tickets.
- Expect a card surcharge in many shops.
- Take cash before treks; mountain ATMs are rare.
Health and vaccines
Air, water and altitude
Kathmandu's air quality is often poor, especially in the dry winter months, with fine-particle levels several times the WHO guideline. Drink bottled or filtered water. The city sits at about 1,400 m, which few people notice, but treks to higher ground need proper acclimatisation.
- Altitude
- About 1,340–1,400 m
- Air quality
- Often poor in winter and spring
- Carry a mask for dusty days.
- Plan rest days on any high-altitude trek.
Staying safe
Traffic, earthquakes and touts
Kathmandu is generally safe for visitors. Watch for motorbikes in narrow lanes, ignore touts offering trekking deals on the street, and book through registered agencies. Nepal lies in an active earthquake zone, so learn your hotel's emergency exits on arrival.
- Book treks only through licensed agencies.
- Keep valuables close in crowded squares.
Where to stay
Thamel, Patan and Boudha
Thamel is the traveller district, packed with guesthouses, trekking shops and restaurants, a walk from Durbar Square. Patan, across the Bagmati river, is calmer and has its own Durbar Square. Staying near Boudhanath puts you beside the great stupa for early-morning walks with pilgrims.

- Budget to mid-range, trekking shops
- Patan
- Quieter, near Patan Durbar Square
- Boudha

Getting around
Taxis, walking and day hires
Kathmandu has no metro or tram, so most visitors walk the old centre and take taxis between sights. Agree the fare before getting in or use a ride app. For Bhaktapur, Changu Narayan or a full valley day, hire a car with driver through your hotel.

SIM and internet
Nepal Telecom and Ncell
Nepal's two main mobile networks, Nepal Telecom (NTC) and Ncell, sell tourist SIMs at Tribhuvan International and in Thamel. Bring your passport and a photo for registration. Data coverage is good in the valley but patchy on many trekking routes.

Culture and etiquette
Temples, stupas and courtesy
Walk clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels at Swayambhunath and Boudhanath. Remove shoes before entering temples, and note that the main Pashupatinath temple admits Hindus only; visitors watch from across the Bagmati. Cremations take place on the riverbank there, so keep cameras discreet.
- Walk clockwise around stupas
- Use your right hand to give and receive
- Ask before photographing people
- Entering Hindu-only shrines
- Touching people's heads
- Photographing cremations up close

Kathmandu weather by month
Kathmandu's airport station, at 1,337 m, sees January nights near 3°C and 384 mm of rain in July. These are World Meteorological Organization 1991–2020 normals.
Climate figures are approximate 1991–2020 averages for Kathmandu (Tribhuvan International Airport; World Meteorological Organization and Nepal's Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, via Wikipedia).
Four days across the seven Kathmandu Valley monument zones
Four days lets you see all seven monument zones of the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage Site, inscribed by UNESCO in 1979. Spend day one in Kathmandu Durbar Square and Swayambhunath, day two at Pashupatinath and Boudhanath, day three in Patan, and day four in Bhaktapur with Changu Narayan.
Kathmandu Durbar Square, also called Hanuman Dhoka after the old royal palace, is a cluster of pagoda temples and courtyards. The city's name comes from the Kasthamandap, a wooden pavilion that stood here. Swayambhunath sits on a hill to the west, reached by a long flight of steps where monkeys roam.
Pashupatinath, Nepal's most important Hindu temple, stands on the Bagmati river close to the airport. Non-Hindus can visit the riverbank and the terraces opposite the main shrine. Boudhanath, a short ride north-east, is the centre of the city's Tibetan Buddhist community; pilgrims circle it at dawn and dusk.
Patan, across the river, has its own Durbar Square and a fine museum in the old palace. Bhaktapur, about an hour east, is the best-preserved of the three royal cities. Changu Narayan, the seventh monument zone, sits on a ridge above it with one of the valley's oldest temples. Many monuments were damaged in the 2015 earthquake, and some are still under restoration.
October and November skies and the valley's festival season
October and November are Kathmandu's finest months. The monsoon has washed the air clean, highs sit around 24–27°C, rain almost stops, and the Himalayan peaks show from the valley rim. The big Hindu festivals of Dashain and Tihar also fall in autumn, on lunar dates that change each year.
Dashain is Nepal's longest and most important festival, when families gather and offices close for days. Tihar, the festival of lights, follows a few weeks later with oil lamps, marigold garlands and offerings to crows, dogs and cows. Book transport well ahead for both.
March and April are the second-best season, warm and mostly dry, though haze can hide the mountains. Winters are dry and sunny by day, but January nights fall to about 3°C and few buildings are heated.
Momos, dal bhat and Newari cooking
Eat dal bhat, the national meal of rice, lentil soup, vegetable curry and pickle, at least once; refills are usually free. Momos, steamed or fried dumplings, are the city's favourite snack. For something more local, look for Newari restaurants in Patan, Bhaktapur and the old quarters of Kathmandu.
The Newar people are the largest ethnic group in the valley, and their cooking uses buffalo meat, beaten rice, spiced soybeans and rice beer. Bhaktapur is known for juju dhau, a rich sweet yoghurt served in clay bowls.
Thamel has restaurants for every taste, from Tibetan to Italian, aimed at trekkers. Eat freshly cooked food, avoid raw salads in small places and stick to bottled or filtered water.
Thamel permits and flights for treks beyond Kathmandu
Kathmandu is the starting point for most Himalayan trips in Nepal. Trekking permits, gear shops and licensed agencies are concentrated in Thamel, domestic flights to Pokhara and the mountain airstrips leave from Tribhuvan International, and tourist buses run to Pokhara and Chitwan.
Plan at least one buffer day in Kathmandu after a trek, because mountain flights are often delayed by cloud. Use the time for the museums of Patan or a sunrise drive to the valley rim, where the high peaks appear on clear autumn mornings.
