Dhaka to Kathmandu flight guide
Both airlines fly nonstop from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka (DAC) to Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu (KTM): Biman Bangladesh Airlines and Himalaya Airlines. At 662 km and about 1 hour 30 minutes, it is one of the shortest international flights from Dhaka, and it suits city breaks, pilgrimages to Lumbini and the start of a Himalayan trek.
Biman flies a Boeing 737-800 with 162 seats and includes 30 kg of checked baggage. Himalaya Airlines, based in Nepal, uses an Airbus A320 of around 180 seats and includes 20 kg. Both allow 7 kg in the cabin. On a flight this short the seat makes little difference; baggage is what matters for trekkers carrying boots, a sleeping bag and poles.
Citizens of SAARC countries, including Bangladesh, get a free 30-day visa on arrival at Tribhuvan. Other travellers should check the Nepal Department of Immigration for the rules and fees that apply to their passport.
Tribhuvan is about 6 km east of the city centre and Thamel, the district where most first-time visitors stay. Prepaid and metered taxis wait outside both terminals, and Sajha Yatayat buses run from the international terminal to central Kathmandu and Lalitpur. The airport sits at about 1,340 m in a valley ringed by hills, and in the clear months after the monsoon the high Himalaya often shows from the window.
The airport has a single runway without an instrument landing system, so winter fog can delay the approach or divert flights to Pokhara. Avoid tight onward plans on winter mornings.
Domestic flights use a separate terminal, reached by a free shuttle from the main airport gate. Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines and Shree Airlines fly to Pokhara and to Gautam Buddha Airport near Lumbini. Clear immigration, collect your bag and check in again, leaving plenty of time between flights.
Two airlines operate direct flights from Dhaka (DAC) to Kathmandu (KTM). The flight takes about 1h 45m.

Our travel team answers questions about Dhaka to Kathmandu flights
General
Nepal Standard Time is UTC+5:45, one of the few offsets in the world set at a quarter hour, while Dhaka is on UTC+6. The result is a gap of just 15 minutes all year. Set your watch back a quarter of an hour on landing.
Rarely. The airport lies at about 1,340 m, high enough to feel cooler than Dhaka but low enough that altitude sickness is not a concern for most people. Breathlessness only becomes an issue on treks that climb well above the valley, so take that part slowly.
Getting there
Boots, a sleeping bag and poles add up fast, so Biman's 30 kg in the hold is the safer choice for a trekking trip. Himalaya Airlines includes 20 kg, enough for a city break but tight for full gear. Both keep the cabin bag to 7 kg, so wear the heaviest boots on board.
Prepaid and metered taxis wait outside both terminals at any hour, and the ride to Thamel, about 6 km away, is short unless traffic is bad. A prepaid counter fixes the fare before you leave, which avoids haggling. Sajha Yatayat buses also run from the international terminal to central Kathmandu and Lalitpur.
It can happen. Tribhuvan has a single runway and no instrument landing system, so thick winter fog or congestion can hold aircraft in Dhaka or delay the approach, and Pokhara and Gautam Buddha airport serve as diversion alternates. Avoid tight onward plans on winter mornings.
Yes. Gautam Buddha Airport at Siddharthanagar, near Bhairahawa, is the closest airport to Lumbini, and Buddha Air, Yeti and Shree Airlines fly there from Kathmandu's domestic terminal. It is a short hop, much quicker than the road journey out of the Kathmandu valley.
Slightly. Himalaya Airlines' Airbus A320 typically has around 180 seats, while Biman's Boeing 737-800 has 162. Both are single-aisle jets, and on a flight this short the difference in comfort is small; baggage allowance is the bigger factor when choosing.
Cancellations & changes
Domestic flights use a separate terminal, reached by a free shuttle from the main airport gate. Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines, Shree Airlines and others fly to Pokhara. Clear immigration, collect your bag, take the shuttle and check in again, and allow plenty of time between the two flights.
Stay & facilities
Most first-timers stay in Thamel, where two of the hotels under Where to stay, along with the Fairfield by Marriott, are within walking distance of shops and restaurants. For more space and calm, the classic choices near Pashupatinath and on Durbar Marg are listed there too.
Yes. The hotel in Naxal under Where to stay has an outdoor pool, the main reason to choose it over the Thamel hotels. It suits families and anyone who wants a break from Thamel's noise after a day of sightseeing.
