The main house of the Kikunoi group in Higashiyama, near Maruyama Park, with three stars in the MICHELIN Guide Kyoto Osaka 2024. A formal seasonal Kyoto kaiseki at fine-dining prices.
Kikunoi Honten is the main house of the Kikunoi kaiseki group, at 459 Shimokawara-cho in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto, near Maruyama Park and Kodaiji Temple. It holds three Michelin stars in the Michelin Guide Kyoto Osaka 2024. It suits travellers who want a formal, seasonal Kyoto kaiseki meal from one of the city's best known chefs. Head chef Yoshihiro Murata, the third generation of his family to lead the kitchen, has run it since 1993.
What a kyo kaiseki meal includes
Kyo kaiseki is Kyoto's formal multi-course meal, built closely around the season. A meal moves through a series of small courses, typically a seasonal appetiser platter, a clear soup, sashimi and grilled dishes, then rice and dessert. Murata is one of the best known ambassadors for Kyoto cuisine abroad. Allow more than two hours.
Prices are at the top end of Kyoto dining, and lunch is usually the gentler way in.
Roan Kikunoi and Akasaka Kikunoi
The company was founded in 1912 and incorporated in 1949. Besides the Higashiyama main house, the group runs Roan Kikunoi in Kyoto and Akasaka Kikunoi in Tokyo, both with two Michelin stars in 2024.
