Yamaimo-yaki
Made with 100% Japanese mountain yam, no flour
A family-run okonomiyaki shop on Dotonbori since 1945 and a Bib Gourmand six years running. The yamaimo-yaki is the signature, cooked on the griddle at a budget price; expect a wait for the counter.
Okonomiyaki Mizuno is a family-run okonomiyaki shop at 1-4-15 Dotonbori, Chuo-ku, on Osaka's canal-side entertainment street, open since 1945. It has been named a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide for six consecutive years. It suits visitors who want to try Osaka's signature griddled pancake at a budget price and do not mind a queue. Namba and Nipponbashi stations are a short walk away.
The yamaimo-yaki is the dish to try. It is made with grated Japanese mountain yam in place of wheat flour, which gives it a very light, fluffy texture. The Mizuno-yaki, the house special, combines pork, squid and ground beef. Pancakes are cooked on the iron griddle in front of you. Lunch starts from about JPY 1,500 and dinner from about JPY 2,000 per person, and a visit usually takes under an hour.
There are 12 counter seats around the griddle, and the room is small, busy and friendly. Mizuno takes no reservations, so you queue at the door. Weekend evening waits often run 20 to 45 minutes. A weekday lunch around 11:00 is the easiest time.
The shop is about five minutes on foot from Namba Station on the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line and from Nipponbashi Station on the Sakaisuji Line, and about ten minutes from Namba Station on the Nankai Main Line. It sits just inside the arcade from Dotonbori, close to the east end of the lantern-lit Hozenji Yokocho alley.
