Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki at the end of the Hondori shopping street, a few steps from Peace Memorial Park. It is cheap, served at the counter, and has vegetarian options.
Nagataya is a Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki restaurant on the ground floor of the Shigeishi Building, 1-7-19 Otemachi, Naka-ku, at the end of the Hondori shopping street. It suits visitors who want the city's local dish close to Peace Memorial Park, at a low price and with vegetarian options. The park and museum are a few steps away, which makes it an easy lunch stop.
Layering the crepe, cabbage and noodles
It is built in layers on the griddle: a thin crepe, a tall heap of cabbage, then noodles and toppings, all pressed and turned until crisp. Osaka-style okonomiyaki mixes everything into a batter, so the two look and eat very differently. Nagataya seasons its noodles with tonkotsu pork broth and uses a custom sauce built on Otafuku.
House specials have included the original with squid and shrimp and a deluxe with mochi and cheese. Grilled Hiroshima oysters appear in season, and vegetarian and vegan versions are offered. An English menu with pictures makes ordering simple.
Waiting times and ordering in the queue
Expect a line at peak lunch and dinner times; waits of an hour have been reported in late 2025, and staff hand out menus to people waiting so the order is ready when you sit. The house special adds deep-fried garlic chips and a raw egg yolk on top of the original. Small pan-fried pork gyoza make a good side. Ask for a seat facing the teppan to watch the cooks work the griddle.
